Can Australia salvage some dignity in the one dayers?

By mrrexdog / Roar Guru

After a poor Test series against Sri Lanka, Australia are looking to finish off the tour by winning the one-day series.

Vice-captain David Warner will make his return to the ODI side after missing the end of the tri-series in the West Indies due to injury.

Big-hitting batsman Glenn Maxwell will miss the series, after being dropped because of recent poor form.

Australia need to make some changes if they wish to be successful in Sri Lanka.

The XI should be:

Travis Head
David Warner
Steve Smith
George Bailey
Shaun Marsh
Mitch Marsh
Matthew Wade
Mitchell Starc
Josh Hazlewood
Adam Zampa
Nathan Lyon

Travis Head has been in good form for Yorkshire and would be a better opening option than either Usman Khawaja or Aaron Finch.

Warner, Smith and Bailey pick themselves. Shaun Marsh has performed well against spin, so is a good option at five.

Mitch Marsh, while underperforming with the bat in the Test side, has done well in ODIs. Tim Paine, Sam Whiteman and Peter Nevill are all far better keepers than Matthew Wade, but seeing as Wade is the only ‘keeper in squad, he will play.

Starc, Hazlewood and Zampa are automatic selections, while Nathan Lyon bowled well enough in the West Indies to be Australia’s second-choice tweaker.

A good performance from Australia will see the side recoup some of the dignity they lost in the Test series.

Mitch Marsh is being sent home. Not in the ODI squad. Apparently it's due to the heavy summer schedule coming up.

I can not see how Khawaja can fit into the odi eleven. Finch and Warner are obvious choices to open, Smith picks himself, S. Marsh will obviously be picked, M. Marsh also. So that is basically 5 spots. Bailey is a must on those sorts of wickets. Selectors may also want to see Head at some stage. All of these guys are in front of Khawaja for that series. I actually think our odi batting will do well there. In Finch you have a guy who can score ugly runs when needed and Bailey who is excellent against spin. Of course Shaun and Smith are our best players of spin.

If the Sri Lankans have anything about them, they'll turn out dustbowls for the one dayers. I hope they do.

If they continue to pick people like Moises Henriques... they deserve to lose. I'd rather they put Hilton Cartwright in than Henriques! Klinger still getting lots of runs, surely he'd be more reliable and play spin better than most younger prospects. ..and none of that "but he's been in great form in Australia" to any of our failing batsmen, a 3-0 loss to Sri Lanka.. who recently looked like relegation fodder.. heads need to roll.

He is one of the few to handle Brad Hogg as though he was Nathan Hauritz.

Khawaja needs a shot at redemption. The performance of Burns and Khawaja pales in comparison to that of the selectors picking 4 batsmen. All it did was rap them over the knuckles. Despite his woes against spin Khawaja is very talented. You can't just parachute any Tom, Dick or Harry into tests in India or test in general. Ponting had a few ordinary efforts in India. M Waugh's infamous audi effort. You have to back the talent. A few meaningless games of ODI is what he and the team need. SA have Tahir and Pakland have the mighty Shah, they will have been taking big notes. The aussies need to be taking the initiative come the summer.

Is opening with Head a bit like throwing him to the lions? He may have been going great in England but not as an opener. I would stick with our regular openers in Warner and Finch with Head in the middle order where he bats for his state.

Khawaja has to be in the top 11

If we want to pick players with India in mind CA could well have missed a trick in not picking Peter Handscomb instead of Wade for this series. Some people in the know are wrapping Handscomb as the equal of Michael Clarke against the slow ball.

Why should our performance over in the Asian sub continent shock us any more. We should be used to it by now. I will be shocked, though, if CA does not now put 100 % time and money to have our Baggy Greens properly prepared for India.

We should win but a thrashing?. Not if they again stack their side with spin. and produce more dust bowls. This will be a good test for George Bailey as he is one of our best players of spin. he has also been in career best red ball form over the past 12 months. Pass the test in this ODI series and he could find himself recalled for India. I am one who would like to see that.

Even at their current ages, I suspect Ponting, Hayden, Clarke and even Watson would have been handy

That dignity bolted long ago, no getting it back. The disgraceful and meek submission of a supposed number 1 ranked team won't be got back by a few decent performances on road pitches in the One Dayers. It's this kind of attitude that has lead to the deterioration of batsmen skills and the lack of appreciation for proper test match cricket.

Yep - in hindsight Bailey might have been pretty valuable in the test series; but I think his papers were stamped at test level some time ago. It'd be interesting to compile perhaps a hindsight-based XI of players that play spin well that would have probably shown more fight in the test series; something like: S.Marsh, Warner, Smith, Handscomb, Bailey, M.Marsh, Wade, O'Keefe, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood

They could win this series 15,000 to nil and still not salvage any dignity from that. Anyway, Bailey must play and (hindsight is a wonderful thing) might have been helpful in the test series. Will be goo to give Zampa further experience as well, and hopefully he may one day be a test match bowler.

Ha ha good one Ronan. Nice to see someone mock themselves. But honestly, I expect the series to be competitive and decided 3-2 in either team's favor because the shorter form is considered to be the stringer suit of this present Sri Lankan team and they are past masters at choking the run rate with their spinners between overs 15 to 40 and thereby piling on pressure especially if Australia has to chase. My advice to Smith would be to bat first if he wins the toss in all matches. Sri Lanka are very good at defending totals at home except against India. SL actually have had a very bad time against India in ODIs simply because their spinners are tonked by the Indian batsmen.whether chasing or setting a total. But it would be a different ball game for us.
