Rabbitohs out to avoid 10-year NRL record

By Steve Zemek / Wire

Souths are out to avoid the embarrassment of notching the club’s worst NRL season in over a decade.

Michael Maguire’s side are fighting to sidestep the ignominy of recording the club’s least wins since their disastrous 2006 campaign when they take on Newcastle and Canterbury in the final fortnight.

Having posted just seven victories through 24 rounds, to date it’s their worst season winning eight times in 2008 and potentially their worst season since their three-win year in 2006.

While the Rabbitohs have showed plenty of pluck since being walloped by Canberra earlier this month, beating Warriors and Cronulla, statistics show just how far the club has fallen since their 2014 premiership.

According to Fox Sports Stats, they have slid from being the best defensive side in the competition to the bottom three inside two years.

In 2014 they led the league for tries conceded (2.6) – as well as all the other major defensive categories including metres, linebreaks and missed tackles.

However, they have gone alarmingly backwards, conceding 3.5 tries per game last year and 4.2 tries this year.

In 2016, they are equal second for tries conceded and third last for points conceded (24 per game).

“We’re just playing for each other at the moment and playing for that jersey,” halfback Adam Reynolds said.

“We know there’s a lot on the line and Newcastle always lift for this game, it’s their old boys game for them.

“We’ve turned in some good performance now it’s just about continuing that on.”

Have you seen the knights team full of Holden cup and nsw cup players compared to Souths and roosters line-up. The knights were expected to get the wooden spoon where as Souths and roosters should not be where they are with the talent they have on the field.

"According to Fox Sports Stats, they have slid from being the best defensive side in the competition to the bottom three inside two years." Easts (nearly) did it in one season.

The World Cup/ Origin drain on the Burgii, GI and Adam Reynolds will be Souths biggest problem in 2017. The Hunter contest may prove more difficult than R26 if Des decides to rest a few.. The Souths crew in our family are demanding all manner of tribute in advance.

Yeah Bunnies 'Do It For Your Fans' as we had nothing to celebrate in the last 2 years. We have seen our boys go from bad in 2015 to pathetically bad in 2016, so what's installed for us in 2017??? Let's suck it and see???

Why don't you bloody talk about how pathetic the Rorters have been this season? OR the Knights, 1 win and 1 Draw, that is the worst performance of any club since the 1940s You Drongo. I am sick to death with the pathetic media bashing up on the Rabbitohs every 5 minutes. YOU are all just a pack of jealous, SO and SO's. WHAT club do you Support ZEMEK? Tell us all.
