How my pre-season Raiders prediction was vindicated

By Jarrod Free / Roar Rookie

Well, well, well. It appears it is time for a good old fashioned ‘I told you so’.

In February this year I wrote an article predicting the Canberra Raiders would finish the 2016 NRL regular season in the top four. I also wrote why the Warriors and Sea Eagles would not do so, but that is a story for another day.

Now, if you look back at the comments you will find about 90 per cent of people vehemently disagreeing with me, with some even going so far as to call me delusional, one-eyed, and implying I was simply a fan tooting the horn of my club with a bit of preseason excitement.

In light of all the recent praise and adulation for the Raiders (a lot of it coming from the preseason naysayers), it will be my pleasure to list each of my positional ‘predictions’ and analysis with an explanation of whether it turned out to be correct or incorrect.

Fullback – correct
While Jack Wighton had a few clangers in the first half of the season, one of which could be argued was the reason for a loss to St George Illawarra, the second half of his season has been outstanding.

His fullback defensive play is the envy of every other fullback, and his ball playing has come on in leaps and bounds, while his running game remains as strong as ever.

Wingers – correct
People told me that Jordan Rapana was not even a first grade quality winger because of his apparently suspect defence, but this man has come on to become the best winger in rugby league in 2016.

Sisa Waqa did not play a first grade game in 2016, but Edrick Lee continued to be a safe, above average winger when uninjured, and has a great knack of staying in the field of play when in tight situations.

Centres – definitely correct
Jarrod Croker and BJ Leilua have been the undisputed best centre combination in the NRL in 2016.

Croker is, statistically speaking, one of the best defensive centres in the competition, and Leilua has become the most dangerous centre in the game, with both players able to create chances from anywhere in the field.

It is also worth mentioning that Jarrod Croker scored almost as many points as the entire Newcastle Knights team this year.

Halves – correct
It took them a while to gel, but in the second half of the season it really clicked for Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer. While their influence may not have been immediately apparent, the Raiders scored 688 points this season, with the second highest scoring team being the Cowboys, at 584.

You have to give the halves some credit for the team being one try a game better than the next best attacking team.

Props – incorrect
Shannon Boyd has really developed this year, as have Luke Bateman and Clay Priest, and Junior Paulo has joined the club mid-season and has been fantastic. However, the rest of my analysis on the props fell short.

Frank Paul-Nuuausala was abysmal before departing for the English Super League. Paul Vaughan is back in the side and a great player, but has been by his own admission, rather poor this year and not up to his usual high standards. Jeff Lima was an excellent bench prop in the matches he played, but injury has restricted his chances in 2016.

Hooker – Correct
I argued that Josh Hodgson was among the top three hookers in the game, but in a recent Daily Telegraph fan poll he was voted the number three player in the game overall. If not for a suspension, would almost be a certainty for the Dally M medal, and could still win it regardless.

Back row – correct
Arguable the best back row in the competition this year, though there is some very stiff competition. Josh Papalii has become one of the most damaging back rowers in the game, while Elliot Whitehead has shown a valuable mixture of attacking nous and defensive grit.

Sia Soliola continues to perform any necessary role in the back row, and does it well. Joe Tapine joined the team in 2016 and is developing very well, showing he has a lot of potential for the future.

Reserves – correct
Kurt Baptiste has become a vital piece of the Raiders machine, routinely pushing one of the best hookers in the game into a different position for large parts of matches. Adam Clydesdale provides adequate cover and has done his job well, though Lachlan Croker had an unhappy debut and has had to face more injury woes, cruelling his chances to prove his talent at an NRL level.

Overall – correct
My claim in the preseason was that the Canberra Raiders had one of the best overall squads in the competition, and this was proven correct. After finishing the regular season in second place, my next prediction is that the Raiders will finish the competition proper in second place or better. Does anyone dare to say otherwise?

I still stand by my comment. "if the Raiders continue with this line of thinking “incredible amount of close losses and unfortunate officiating blunders” they will not make the 8 let alone the top 4. That is the old Ricky Stuart blame game. The squad need to rise above that and realise that it is up to them to win games, no excuses." The squad are a very different team mentally this year and that's a credit to them. I hardly remember Ricky pulling out the old refs fault even in the early stages of the season. Whoever told Ricky and Dean Pay to drop the up and in defence and play slide defence really deserves the credit for turning this team around. It's made Croker live up to the hype and the bloke can actually defend now.

There is certainly a reasonable chance the Sharks will get up, but given the magnitude of form reversals it would take from both teams, you must be a brave man to so openly claim that they will!

Without very closely watching the club it is understandable that people would disagree with me, and the defensive concerns were certainly warranted. Even I wouldn't have predicted they could keep the Storm under 10 points.

I understood where the naysayers were coming from, especially seeing as nobody pays much attention to Canberra when they are out of the spotlight. I do think that Tapine and Paulo have been major reasons for the success of the Raiders this year, as have Priest and Bateman. Without those four, the depth of the pack probably would not have been strong enough, despite having some very classy players.

You can call Dugan the best defensive fullback in the comp all you like, and you may well be correct. I have not watched much of the Dragons this year as I have found it frustrating, given the great talent on their roster. However, I'd much prefer to have the second best defensive fullback play every game (also a much better ballplayer) than have the best defensive fullback be made of glass and only play half the season. I don't like Dugan, but I would like to see him reach his potential and I don't think he has even come close to doing so at this stage. It would be great to see him develop a passing game, as it would give his game a new element and also increase the danger of his running game because other teams would not be able to put the blinkers on when he has the ball.

I think the finals will be very interesting. Not wanting to sound overly one-eyed, I do think they can win the premiership. I am normally a pessimist of a fan, but I think their only real threat is the Melbourne Storm. If the Raiders play anywhere close to their best I think the Storm are the only ones with a chance of matching them, and even then I think the Green Machine should get up!

Good work Jarrod - you and I were of like minds. I was lambasted prior to the seasons launch by plenty when I mentioned that the Raiders were specials at $5.50 to make the top 4. I'd love to see a Raiders - Sharks, or Panthers Grand Final, where two teams showcase free flowing attacking football to the masses. There's nothing like seeing teams that are prepared to offload and move the ball about regardless of their field position.

Actually I reckon goal-line is probably a third category of defence! In-goal, goal-line, and open play. Is anyone keeping stats on these?? :) Glad Dugan's working out for the Dragons.

Leilua is ridiculous. I know myself and a number of Raiders fans were very iffy on him when he first came on board but he is significantly better now than he ever was with the Knights. Apparently he's best mates with Rapana who has helped him settle and really focus on his game.

Yeah dragons havent been too inspiring and dugan has missed a large chunk of the season injured, which is partly responsible i'd say for their inconsistent season. Dugan's goal line defence is 2nd to none. His kick returns are second to only inglis and his positioning is second to only slater. Dugan is also rarely stood up even though he lacks the pace of other fullbacks which is an indication that Dugan is also really good at stopping runaways. Unfortunately for dugan he isnt a ball player and that is required by fullbacks these days, hence why rep coaches see him more as a hard running centre.

Well done Jarrod - the Raiders have lived up to your hype across the park. I note I lead off on the critiques...thankfully I wasn't too scathing. Looking back at my comments I stand by most of them as things were then. Leilua has been the biggest turnaround and is undeniable for a blues jersey next year. Good luck for the rest of the season. I think the Raiders will be most people's second team. I'll be cheering for them once the dogs are gone.
