Match preview:

The in-form Penrith Panthers will avoid going to Homebush, but they are still away from home as they host the unsettled Canterbury Bulldogs in the second NRL elimination final. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 4:10pm (AEST).

Intriguingly, the venue of the match wasn’t locked in until after the final game of the season. The Bulldogs looked like they were going to finish sixth, but a loss in the final round, while the Panthers demolished Manly, saw a swap in positions.

The Panthers have then obviously elected to get the game away from Homebush and take it to the Sydney Football Stadium.

The Bulldogs though, will be disappointed with their finishing position on the ladder and still would have been if they had finished sixth. They were battling for a top four spot not so long ago, dropping a couple of matches straight coming into the finals.

While the quality of opposition Canterbury have had to face has been strong, they are teams you have to beat to win the competition and right now the Bulldogs don’t look like they will be doing that.

As mentioned, the Panthers have marched into the finals on the back of a big win over the Sea Eagles but for a team that were supposed to be in a battle for the top eight, they have done a remarkable job over the closing stages of the season.

Apart from that win against the Sea Eagles, the Panthers have won five straight and with their inexperienced halves combination of Bryce Cartwright and Nathan Cleary ticking along, they have been putting up a lot of points.

If they can fire here, it is going to make life extremely difficult for the Bulldogs.

In team news for the Panthers, Moses Leota has been added as 18th man in an otherwise unchanged line-up.

The Bulldogs are without fullback Will Hopoate, due to his choice not to play on Sunday due to his religious beliefs, which is a massive blow.

Brett Morris will shift to custodian, Tyrone Phillips comes onto the wing, Sam Kasiano returns from suspension onto the bench, and Danny Fualalo has been named as 18th man.

The winner of this moves on to play the loser of the Canberra Raiders and Cronulla Sharks qualifying final, which was played yesterday evening.

Prediction
The Bulldogs are unsettled and their form has been patchy – they finished seventh, when only a short time ago they were challenging for the four.

Meanwhile, the Panthers have been gaining momentum and form, with their young halves combination improving by the week.

Penrith should run away with this, and it could well be a convincing scoreline.

Panthers by 12.

Did it take you 19 hours to realise you were baiting me? There's no bait, I just can't respect someone who supports five teams at once and then bags other people when their team goes out. Not to mention you used to support the Broncos and cast them aside for whatever reason. The lack of loyalty just shows your lack of moral fibre. ie you are a grub... And if you're such a lover of the game overall...why are you so anti so many other teams? Nothing you say adds up.

When you can cheer on any one of five teams and then bag other people when their side goes out of the comp from the safeground of "my team is still in it" is weak and grubby. Not to mention disloyal.

or just someone who loves the game of rugby league, Unlike you Barry the teams i suport are not bigger than the game itself, I love the game not just the teams, the teams i barrack for are from personal choices and to be called a grub or cretin for it just shows hopw much of one you are, typical dogs supporter.

Excellent result. Hit the road dogs. skill will beat thugs every time. Now just get rid of those Gallen / Ennis grubs and that smug Cameron Smith then all will be ok and lord karma will be served.

The Dogs need a new squad (and fast) for 2017 as what they have are second rate, as Des was pointing in the sheds at half time and going off his head, there is no ticker in that squad, then add employing Will I am or Will I won't and the Dogs haven't got much of an example to follow. Somehow there doesn’t seem like there is much pride in that club.

Chiming in very late here EJ, agree with you on 4 of those 5 players but not Cartwright. He is great with the ball but his defence is still very shaky and no where near Origin standard. If he gets that right then absolutely. Either way the Panthers have some great talent and a very understated coach, good times ahead for the Pennies. Oh and they are playing very good footy without 2 very good ex Sea Eagles outside backs ?!

It's so strange that they wouldn't check that. It's an elimination final and the scores were so close.

To be fair the Bulldogs had a few injury problems they found hard to cover in the 2nd half - particularly having to cover Morris at full back plus Will Hopoate was not available for personal reasons plus Reynolds was concussed and had to come off. If the Dogs were going to challenge it had to be Reynolds that sparked them. According to Fox the Dogs had Kasiano and Jackson at centre and win respectively at some stages of the second half so it was no surprise that they were carved up with long range tries to the Panthers. Not to take away from Penrith - they were outstanding in the second half. Particularly the combination of Moylan and Mansour plus Peachey and DWZ. The Raiders will have to shut them down if they are a chance next week. The forward battle will be very important next week. Interesting that a lot of commentators are talking about Penrith's golden run but the Raiders had won ten in a row before they lost by 2 points on Saturday night. As a consequence of that loss everyone seems to be writing off the Raider. If Hodgson and Austin are both fit it will be game on. Fascinating finals prospects next weekend. The old foes the Cowboys and Broncos locking horns and the newcomers Canberra and Raiders fighting it out to challenge for a berth in the preliminary final

Bottle that second half and the Panthers would annihilate a Hodgson and Austin-less Raiders side. Fingers crossed they are both on the park next week. Tough being a Bulldogs fan. Set the tone but then couldn't match it with the Panthers. Why set a pace of you can only maintain it for one half?

Who cares? Only the lowest sort of cretin goes for five teams at once...put it on the line or shut the f..k up.

I appreciate the gamesmanship from Moylan but it's inexcusable from a touchie thats standing right above it. It wasn't even close to a second effort and Moylan was at full stretch for the sideline. Any touchie that can't see that from 50cm away has no idea, no understanding of the game and no place in the NRL.

I was not going for either team so I am impartial. I did not think it was a try but each to their own.

Thanks Scott. Moylan and Mansoor played out of this world. Wallace on the end of one of the tries of the final. Cheers

Congrats Panthers and good luck for the rest of the season. Didn't think the score line was a reflection - but that's what they all say. Dogs were a long way in front in the first half for mine and unlucky to inly go in 6-4 up. Panthers were able to capitalise on any bit of loose play or half opportunity. Their ad lib footy was brilliant. Some hard questions need to be asked for the dogs. Hopefully we come into 2017 with a clearer focus and more balanced game. Good luck to everyone left!!!
