Wallaby flanker Dean Mumm is blessed, he’s again in the starting line-up to meet the Boks early Sunday morning at Loftus Versfeld.
Consistently one of the poorer performers in the pack, there’s no point in him buying a lotto ticket, he’s used all his good luck to continue wearing the No.6 jumper.
Seeking a third successive win after six losses on the bounce, Wallaby coach Michael Cheika has made changes to the last squad that beat the Boka 23-17 at Suncorp on September 10.
Reds lock Rob Simmons replaces Kane Douglas who moves to the bench, and Sean McMahon replaces the injured David Pocock at No 8.
For some unfathomable reason, Cheika is again playing pointless games of a nine-man bench with one to be omitted.
This is not a cricket Test, waiting to see the state of the wicket.
Hooker James Hanson has at last been recalled to the bench to replace Tatafa Polota-Nau who has a broken arm, prop Tom Robertson takes over from Allan Ala’alatoa, lock Rory Arnold makes way for Douglas, and Scott Fardy is back in favour.
Flying Fijian winger Sefa Naivalu is set for his first cap, if he’s not the one to be omitted.
It all depends on whether Cheika decides on a 6-2 bench, or a 5-3.
If it’s 6-2, either Naivalu or Tevita Kuridrani will watch from the stand. If it’s a 5-3 decision, either Fardy or Lopeti Timani will be stand-side,
Repeat – pointless games, fooling nobody.
One really positive decision is the starting backline has been retained, but the pack could so easily been strengthened.
Leaving Mumm out altogether, and selecting Fardy at six, would not only form a far more powerful backrow, but solved the bench games in one hit.

Thanks Timbo, nicely said. Agree that the NH teams will be gunning for RWC revenge (especially Scotland LoL) and the Wally Bees have a hard road in front of them. By the time they hit Twickers, a lot of blokes may have sore bodies and I suspect their mental state could depend on how they have travelled over the first 4 games of the EOYT. England have a far easier road, playing only 3 matches (one against Fiji) before the big one, so should be much fresher. If Argentina has all their players, they could give England a hard time but I think their European-based players will be excluded, so could be another easy win for the Rose. Too bad as England needs hard matches to keep improving. The Poms played really smart and surprisingly fast test rugby in their June tour, scored lots of points and undoubtedly won lots of fans. I am with you and think a WB victory over their June Nemesis, especially after a long tour may be a pipe dream this year. But Aust, England and NZ are blooding new players and bringing in new game strategies, so I'll be happy if the WB are tough opponents and play great test rugby. Sadly I don't have time to follow what's happening in the UK rugby scene that much, so thanks for that info of yours. I read that N.Hughes and Ben Morgan are in the squad and the centre J.Marchant has massive wraps for a 20 year old, much like R.Hodge over here. Elliot Daly could be the one to watch though, seen bits of him and he looks really good. Re the WB forwards, I don't think they are the real deal yet but improving so we can only wait and see what they learn on the EOYT. Now if only the team can sort out their inside centre and field kick-n-chase, we might just beat them Northern Heathens yet. :)

Thanks, TF. Us poms have occasional moments of clarity, normally once or twice a year. I think the EOYT will be fascinating in general. The NH teams will certainly be gunning for you as the RWC still smarts and it's a Lions' year so everyone's out to impress. At this stage I'd have England as favourites for the match at Twickers against your lot for two main reasons. First, there has been genuine improvement under Jones. Second, it looks to me like a very tough schedule for the WBs over the next few weeks with the Twickenham game last of the lot. I think I read it was something like 8 games in 64 days, and against teams who all have reason to go for you. You'll have to have quite a bit of luck to pitch up at Twickenham after that not severely banged up and missing a few. Against that, the season has started with a few injury worries for England. Farrell and Hartley are currently side-lined with back injuries with no clear date for their return. That will worry Jones. Hartley has led the side well and Farrell is considered vital for his kicking (regardless of whether he prefers Ford at FH). Also Haskell is definitely out as is his likely replacement Clifford. Tuilagi is injured again but, frankly, he's been injured so much most disregard him anyway. If he comes back any time this year it will be seen as a bonus. At the moment it's all manageable for England, but a few more injuries to key players and it will start to even out the state I think the WBs will be in come match-day. The Aussie backs always worry me; but not as sure as you that the pack is much more formidable than it was in June.

I actually think Horwill is a worse lock. And Simmons, Douglas, Timani, Mumm, Skelton others that sit below Sharpe. But I agree, it is not Aus's strong point and probably hasn't been since Harrison, Eales and co. Not sure where the tall timber has gone... AFL I am guessing.

It’s unlikely, Gewutz. I would expect Mumms father to be taller. But as there is a 17 year gap between them it cannot be ruled out.

What I would love to see is a battle between the mummy and Bernie from 'A weekend at Bernies.' Don't ask me who would win. I have no idea. But what I do know is it would be very similar to this test match. From Hollywood

I agree Chook. I actually quite like the Egyptian mummy's. Okay yes they are usually dead but still looking okay. What we have here is a running, live one. Cheika will strap up Mumm and everywhere. He will wrap him up in white tape. Maybe even white clothe. I've predicted this for a while now. You are about to see the first live mummy play a rugby test. You read it first here on the roar. Remember that. From Hollywood

Whispering, I will say one thing. I think you sum up the current state of Ozzie rugby very well.
This is serious Mumm

You clearly haven't been watching the Mitre 10 Cup, if you think Mummy is arguably the quickest lock in the world. Arguably I am also, at age 62, 170cms and 86kgs... Anything is arguable, the question is, is it a justifiable position?

Agree rebel, tried to find another but I think James Cordon best typifies in a speed sense how the English will approach the ABs next...confident, professional, completely non delusional...gotta admire it. ? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CAXhib4aemM

Tman, I agree it was a toss up of either what I posted or putting Matt Dunnings intercept video up. More directed at those who make these claims constantly, they usually say it with great authority based on perception only.

Jason Taumalolo is a Kiwi, can't jump and likely be useless in a ruck. Yes he is a brutal runner but he gets a 10m wind up in RL which he would rarely get in rugby. Its a similar story to M.Koroibete who is moving to Rugby from the Storm RL team. His weight is listed as 93kg. The way rugby wingers and centres are these days, that's midget sized, but he does have a big heart. He may be fabulous (as per J,Taumalolo) or could be a complete dud. One bloke who would be a star in rugby is the other JT in that North Qld side. That man is a legend. :)

Sheesh Timbo, for a Pom you make sense. Now that's scary. :) Been a while since I seen your dial on the Roar, hope all is well with you. Any thoughts on the Wb vs Eng match at Twickers this year? The WB forwards pack, admittedly sans D.Pocock, is starting to find its feet and looking more formidable (where have I heard that before?). We just need to fix the 5/8 - inside centre combo and things will be rosey. Any news from the Old Dart on the England team. All I know is M.Tuilagi appears to be out (would they drop O.Farrell after the June series??).

KabOom Peter K, you got it in one; your comment below about opposing 5/6 (this case M.Steyn) kicking into your 22 and you are fragile in the lineout. Its Groundhog day, go back to the Sydney test match against the Poms and that's exactly what happened once Simmons left the field about 35th minute.

Mania... let me make the answer to your question about the issue with Fardy very simple. Fardy does not play for the Tahs! Cheiks loves his baby blue and has made many stupid decisions based on this over his tenure as coach.
