Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for Argentina?

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies have slumped to their sixth loss of the 2016 season, going down 10-18 to the Springboks in Pretoria on Sunday morning.

It was a disappointing result for the Aussies as they looked to end their run of losses at Loftus Versfeld, but couldn’t quite get the job done despite holding the Boks tryless.

There’s just one more match left now of the Rugby Championship for the Australian side, against Argentina at Twickenham next week, and they need to win if they’re to square the ledger at 3-3 across the competition.

So what needs to be done between now and then? Were the changes made for this Test good ones – or should they be reversed? Should we stick with the current set up and hope it comes good, or bring in some fresh faces and pray for a turnaround?

For the answer to that all-important question, Roarers, we’re turning things over to you.

What changes need to be made ahead of the Test against the Springboks? Who fared well last night, who flopped? Who deserves another chance, and whose time is up? Who are Australia’s best options waiting in the wings? In short: who comes in, who goes out?

There will, we bet, be a variety of opinions on the matter, and in this week’s Roar Forum you are invited to let us know in the comments what yours is.

For your reference, here’s the full team from last night:

Wallabies team vs Springboks at Loftus Versfeld
1. Scott Sio, 2. Stephen Moore, 3. Sekope Kepu, 4. Rob Simmons, 5. Adam Coleman, 6. Dean Mumm, 7. Michael Hooper, 8. Sean McMahon, 9. Will Genia, 10. Quade Cooper, 11. Reece Hodge, 12. Bernard Foley, 13. Samu Kerevi, 14. Dane Haylett-Perry, 15. Israel Folau.

Reserves: 16. James Hanson, 17. James Slipper, 18. Tom Robertson, 19. Kane Douglas, 20. Scott Fardy, 21. Nick Phipps, 22. Tevita Kuridrani, 23. Sefania Naivalu.

What changes do you want to see for the next Test? Let the debate begin!

Speight is past it...Naivalu is way more talented and faster. Speight was a good super rugby player a couple of years ago ,but he was never ever test standard..

Mate do you want us to win our lineouts?? Simmons is in ..He is a weak ball carrier and is not great at cleaning out ,but neither are Mumm Fardy and Douglas..At least Simmons is very good in the lineouts makes most of his tackles and can play 80mins...

I havent had the chance to see 1H yet. But in 2H I saw sloppy mistakes and 2014 / early 2015 type simple BD misreads. This was accompanied by forwards and backs passing under pressure, seemingly on purpose to create opportunities. I like what I saw, and would like them keep at it: - The loss, to me, was understandable considering the new base game they are trying. - But the backrow is still not good enough, likewise Foley at 12 - which is wasted position. Let the Pumas match be the launchpad for the EOYT and next year's team. After this, there is only two years before the run for RWC19: - 2017, get the new base game and upskilling across all Aus SR and NRC teams - 2018, build depth and competition for spots - 2019, prep to WIN the BILL No time left to protect sacred cows, misplaced loyalties and sticking to outdated tactics. We've already been waterboarded on this in 2016.

Ball carrying lack penetration? He is undoubted the hardest and toughest forward in Australia to bring down, close to the only Aussie forward with superb leg drive. Sometimes I think we are all watching different games

He should have copped on after the penalty he conceded in Brisbane by doing something similar to Goosen.

Keep Simmons, Arnold and Coleman as secondrowers, drop Douglass is so out of form Replace your hooker he cannot scrum Sio and Kepu has to carry him in the scrum and unable to compliment replacement frontrowers. Drop Foly and Folau maybe as impact player from bench. He need to redeem his form and dropping him to the bench maybe an excellent option to get into form. Move DH Petty to fullback, Hodge to 12, Naivalu and Speight to wing, Bring Fardy into 6, Timani to 8 and James Hanson to hooker and Tolu to the bench as reserve hooker with MaCullman to the bench and we will beat Agentina and AB easy.

He also has some Jackal and breakdown skills to compliment Hooper's "Specialist" role.

Reading through many of these comments, it seems there is a push for DHP to be at 15. That's all well and good, but before Israel came in, and what might be too easily forgotten, was the Wallabies inability to handle the high ball. If nothing else, give Izzy credit for cleaning up this deplorable weakness. He's the safest fullback in the World. Factors such as creative coaching and the utilisation of set moves could in all probability bring Izzy back to his best, but it's the lack of these tactics and the other 14 who shouldn't allow the opposition to target Folau. We've got to come up with something new and turn him into a weapon again. Remember he is a genius with the offload too. (Offload? What is an offload?)

McMahon is the danger player we need. If those stats are true, I would counter that he wasn't ever given the chance to be on the front foot. Without re-watching ( which would be just too painful), I remember him having to take the ball into the maelstrom too often from standing starts. We need faster ball and go forward, and then that's when you'll see both McMahon and Hooper make a lot more metres. Back row dominance is essential to results, but I can't seem to remember when any of our guys managed a pilfer.

Dave I'm not sure it's style cramping either I just can't see the Cooper, Foley combination being long term. They will get better with more games together but I feel offers Kerevi offer. Kerevi was a test rookie against England with a miserably out of form Foley at 10 and played reasonable well. Kurindrani is not splitting the long like he did last year but Cheika has not afforded him the luxury of playing himself into form like he has others.

There lies the problem, the Wallabies have an issue with penalties that is preventing us from carrying momentum in games. Hawthorn had the same issue, their resolution? Hire a referee to ref training. There is definitely a gap here with the Wallabies and the way they train.

Ok, Steve Moore is there for captaincy and experience but is really not going to well. Where's saia fainga'a (love saying that name) he's a genuine option. The problem is Steve Moore 33, Polota Nau 31, Chiba 28 and Saia Fainga'a 29(age). They're all old but chibba is the man we want. Saia on the bench for now then back to Polota Nau and Chibba. Props are good (Sio and Kepu) but slipper and alatoa on the pine. Coleman and Simmons have done enough to warrant their selection with mumm and Arnold on the bench. Fardy has to be our six with hooper retaining seven and the captaincy should be his. Timani to eight 'till McMahon gets back. Genia although old shows no sign of fading and still is our 9. Phipps can be on the bench because his chemistry with foley our number ten. Eleven can be sefu naivalu or taquele naiyaravoro(good luck commentators). Twelve to hodge, thirteen the beast in kerevi, fourteen DHP and fifteen Folau. This is a controversial back 3 with DHP and Folau able to swap. Beale could contribute wherever he is. My team: 1.Sio 2.Hanson(Polota-Nau when he gets back) 3.Kepu 4.Coleman 5.Simmons 6.Fardy 7.Hooper 8.Timani (McMahon when he gets back) 9.Genia 10.Foley 11.Naiyavoro 12.Hodge 13.Kerevi 14.Haylett-Petty 15.Folau 16.Slipper 17.Saia Fainga'a(Hanson when Polota-Nau gets back) 18. Alaatoa 19.Arnold 20.Mumm 21.McCalmann(Timani when McMahon gets back) 22.Phipps 23.Sefu Naivaro(Beale) 24. Kurindrani (One to be omitted) Moore is completely out but I see a future in a coaching role. You can't have your captain leave 5-10 mins after half time. He could stay until polotanau comes back but then his time is up. A great player but we have to move on and look to youngsters. Cheika has to stay as coach. Feedback?

no he provides a great option at 7. He worked hard at the breakdown. He tackles hard. His ball carrying lacks penetration , he rarely passes and is not a genuine lineout option.

He's played well at times (2015 RWC, 2013 test season). Considering he has been injured 2 or 3 times since the first England test I think he should be given a little bit of leniency (I think he's used it all up in his 2 return tests now) to return to speed. I think he can offer more. But where he's going to offer more is his strengths. He's the athletic lock with the big motor. So tell him you want more athleticism, and more work. If you try and make him into Bakkies Botha he's gonna end up doing less work and no where near as effective as the players he tries to emulate.

TWAS I wouldn't drop Simmons either for, the sake of the lineout. but at this stage of his career I think we have to assume he's giving all he's going to give around the ground. If that's considered not enough then we have to look elsewhere (once a suitable alternative is found).

Is Foley cramping QCs style? Just looks more like 2 blokes who haven't played a lot together. Easy way to fix that. I was never a Foley fan but he's looking ok at 12. Whether Kerevi or Hodge would be better at 12 is another gamble, maybe one too many for now. I like the current backs setup. maybe just swap Folau and DHP.
