All Blacks are too bloody good, so why don't we try this idea?

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

Okay, we all know how great the All Blacks are so let’s just give up and marvel at their skills.

Rugby league celebrates the best in Australia going head-to-head in the State of Origin and one roarer on our Roar Rugby Facebook page suggested something similar for rugby.

Scott Herangi was replying to a post about how the All Blacks had dominated the Rugby championship becoming the first team to secure the maximum number of points (including the old Tri-Nations). That is, a bonus point win in every game.

His simple suggestion immediately resonated with other Facebook users, especially when Scott pointed out how there would be more than enough talent to fill both North and South New Zealand sides (based on where they play Super Rugby).

Scott came up with this as a starting point for the discussion:

North
1) Faumuina
2) Coles
3) Tu’ungafasi
4) Retallick
5) Tuipolotu
6) Savea
7) Cane
8) Kaino
9) Perenara
10) Barrett
11) Savea
12) Moala
13) Lienert-Brown
14) Milner-Skudder (when not injured)
15) McKenzie

South
1) Moody
2) Taylor
3) Franks
4) Romano
5) Whitelock
6) Squire
7) Todd
8) Read
9) Smith
10) Sopoaga
11) Naholo
12) Crotty
13) Fekitoa
14) Dagg
15) Smith

What do you think Roarers? Does this idea have merit? Would this be the greatest representative rugby fixture of all-time, bigger than the British Lions tour? So many questions and mouth-watering propsects.

We can only dream that this will happen one day.

It wouldn't be such a great match if it was island of origin. The North would lose Kaino (ineligible) and McKenzie back to the South. However the South would lose Fekitoa and Naholo (ineligible) and Codie Taylor Sam Whitelock Liam Squire Keiran Read Aaron Smith Lima Sopoanga Israel Dagg Not much of a team left then!

But if its an Island of Origin format wouldnt Fekitoa, Dagg, Sopoaga etc be in the North island team?

Depends if based on birth or first pro match as I believe SOO is. Read was born in Auckland as well and plucked from there.

Yes was at that, Grant Fox ran that match beautifully. He missed his own rare try at the end just in front of us.

It's a pity because it's one way NZ could celebrate its rugby together internally. A well timed annual match with a well thought out trophy, memorial perhaps, based on a players birthplace only...north or South Island might go down well in today's environment. Perhaps if it were fit in before the NH tour and had to include a number of non test players for the selectors to ring in someone new. There's some good rugby around. I think we could still celebrate it more with all the downside to the game going on elsewhere.

Well well Antoni...A man with such self respect that he reverts to 'name-calling' which in the hierarchy of disagreement, short of punching someone, is surely the lowest level one can get to. This is not an attack. It is an observation on my part. An observation that others have made in this forum I might add. It is interesting that you have never denied this as far as I am aware. I seems that you are often keen to throw the cheap shots but less keen to cop the response - stir the old pot then pretend to be the victim. What posting, or not posting, on a website outside of our own countries has to do with self respect or showing respect, I don't know. If having people outside of Aust post on 'The Roar' is indicative of lacking self respect then gee wizz ...there is an awful lot of people lacking self respect. I'm pretty sure 'The Roar' is more than happy they have involvement from outside of Aust just as any NZ blog site would be happy to have input from rugby followers from outside of NZ. The trying to bring it down thing? Seriously? Is someone trying to bring 'The Roar' down?

I'll say, TWS - at least each side would have some decent competition then. That commodity is in rather short supply right now.

Never have and never will post on a Kiwi rugby blog. I have self respect and respect for those Kiwis who are entitled to those blogs without me trying to bring it down. How about you?

Looking at the list of matches of this link makes me nostalgic for the long lost days when Auckland was the Rugby powerhouse of NZ, how things have changed :-(. I still remember Grant Fox kicking the winning field goal in the Lions tour match that Auckland won in 1983, before he was even an all black. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_vs_South_rugby_union_match

Yes I recall the Ford Beegee battles of the north south battles, both big boys at the time.

no, last one was in 2012 in Dunedin. But it was more of an exhibition match without All Blacks.

Problem being though - is that you would want to join it. And then you would create more than one account and post under different user names.

I was more saying as an Australian it doesn't for that reason. For NZ this would be a great idea and I imagine very popular.

This should seriously be considered IMO. There is talk of restructuring the calendar and that NH teams don't want to tour South in June after the RWC. This would be good time to slot a NI vs SI tri-series on a 4 yearly basis. Or else during the British Lions tour in Australia or South Africa and NZ does not have decent opposition to play. From NZRU perspective, it's all about broadcasting rights. How many people would tune in to watch it? If it is treated seriously instead of trial then it will be a big hit. Some of the local derbies in Super Rugby were great to watch because the teams were taking it seriously, with something important on the line, like top spot on the NZ conference, which secures an easier pathway to finals. So there needs to be a decent carrot for the players to perform - as I don't think there any sort of rivalry in NZ like NSW vs QLD.
