Kiwi rugby player suspended masturbating in public

By James Preston / Roar Guru

A Southland Stags rugby player has been sentenced to 18 months’ intensive supervision after admitting to charges of public masturbation.

Dillan Halaholo, 23, was convicted yesterday in the Invercargill District Court. Unfortunately, the incident is far from a one off. Halaholo has been caught in the act on three separate occasions, twice in front of young girls.

Southland Stags were quick to address the issue, terminating his contract the moment they discovered Halaholo had been charged with the offences.

According to police reports, Halaholo’s first offence occurred in the car park of a supermarket in Invercargill when he began masturbating in his car which was parked next to another vehicle. That vehicle happened to contain two young girls who witnessed the incident.

The girls aged 9 and 6 were reportedly left traumatised from the incident with the girls’ parents claiming Halaholo had “taken away their innocence.” Shortly after he masturbated in the presence of two 10-year-old girls – who he glanced over at after partially rolling down his window.

A week later, on June 10, he returned again and masturbated next to a car with a 23-year-old woman inside.

In fronting court, council for Halaholo, Richard Smith argued that Halaholo has “come a long way … in terms of dealing with these things because they are extremely embarrassing and confusing for him and he has had to deal with that.”

Smith said it would be ‘extremely difficult’ for his client to try to play overseas if he was convicted and that naming him and allowing photos to be taken in court would ‘serve no purpose but to further humiliate’ him.

Judge Christina Cook, denied these requests noting the severity of the offences and the repetitive nature of their occurrence.

Immediately after being charged with the offences Halaholo began counselling. Southland Stags confirmed that he was undergoing an extensive long-term clinical rehabilitation plan to address his off-field issues.

Halaholo played 17 games for the Stags in 2014 and 2015 before being called into the Highlanders on a short-term basis as injury cover and travelled to South Africa with them following strong performances.

Face Palm.........kelefua Again you did not answer the question. Poor form. You either ignore the point or genuinely can't see it. . This is futile.

The link I posted is about a rugby player who is in trouble for reasons similar to the player in this article so it has absolute relevance to this thread. I couldn't care less if he were from Melbourne, Auckland or Jumanji I'd still post it. Agree with you 100% that the nationality of these offenders shouldn't have any relevance whatsoever. Hence why it doesn't matter Michael Quinn is an Aussie, the fact that he is a pedo & plays rugby fits right into this article. If this whole conversation upsets you then speak to the author as I was commenting on the content, as they do on a rugby forum.

Goodness gracious me - I feel like I'm being pranked kelefua. Of course the nationality of the individuals is the focus of the comments. That is the whole point of the posters. Some posts have been taken down I note. You did not raise the fact MQ is Aust? - says the man who posts a link to an article headed "Melbourne Rugby Player..." ...go figure. But as I said in my previous post you have shown that you are of the same view as I. You have actually written it in your own words. But I am really wondering why on earth would I be clearly disturbed or offended by the fact MQ is Aust. Why? What possible reason would I have?

The only point I get from you is that you raised the fact that Michael Quinn is an Aussie not me. This fact has clearly disturbed you and that wasn't my intention. My intention was to provide another example of a rugby player in trouble for doing disgusting things involving minors. If you are that upset that the nationality of these criminals shouldn' t be a focus of the comments of this thread, then maybe you should speak to the author of this article.

Another snide remark about my mind - good oh Kelefua. I did not say you raised the name because he was Aust. I said his name was raised by others because he was Aust. However in some bizarre fashion I think you do finally get the point. You said that if his name was raised because he was Aust "that would be cheap, cynicle & against the morals of a good rugby forum like the Roar" ....That is exactly what occurred and is exactly my point. So we do in fact agree...I think.

You may be well pleased Perthstayer, striking a successful blow as you have done for repressed Victorian morality. Puff out your chest in sanctimony I say. "wanker" gets an entry in Urban Dictionary, yes, but you will find it is also listed in conventional, conservative, carefully constructed dictionaries, as:

1. a contemptible person; jerk. 2. a male masturbator."
which quite correctly describes the subject of James' piece. It is even more apt given this is a sports fan comment site, not Toastmasters or the parish council, where use of the vernacular is common, favoured - that is, "plain, everyday, ordinary language". What is it with your
"the headline writer obviously doesn’t have daughters" (apart from being insulting to him and to James Preston)?
In your odd little microcosm is someone who has only sons, or no children at all, less informed, incapable of apprehending the gravity of the crime and not sufficiently aghast on your Appalled and Outraged Meter? I am disappointed the editor acceded to your demand, your solitary contribution to the discussion - a mere 1% with such an assertion , because not only did the original headline speak with unmistakable clarity it also publicised the convicted offender and invited a jolly good public mocking to augment his deserved requital.

I think Michael Quinn is a relevant mention in the context of this article. Despite what your mind reading abilities tell you, I didn't raise his name because he is an aussie, that would be cheap, cynicle & against the morals of a good rugby forum like the Roar. I think we can agree to disagree & move on with our lives. Theres a game at Eden Park on the weekend that should be a ripper!

to Kelefua - oh please - seriously? I said your response was gormless as is this latest one. It was gormless because you chose to completely glance over my point and were churlish enough to suggest I should speak to the man if I was offended that the was Aust. Why would you say that I am offended that he is Aust.? It has nothing to do with my point. Now you have again been churlish by referring to ones state of mind. Come on ... really? is that your best and cheapest shot? If you read OCs posts it is obvious (have you read the whole thread) he raises the name to strike back - it is this Aust/NZ thing that goes on in this forum. And for that reason it is just as crass as many other posts. If the man you speak of was not Aust his name would not have been raised. If you consider the responses to the article separately from the article, surely you can see that it is entirely relevant that he is Aust.

Michael Quinn' name was raised because he is a rugby player that is in trouble for indecent intentions to pay for sex with a 6 year old boy. He even travelled to another country with a rugby team to commit the act. That is the basis of this article, to highlight that this behaviour exists in the rugby community. The fact that Michael Quinn is an Aussie is irrelevant but it seems to offend you to the point you are calling another Roarer' response "stupid". That is a sad reflection of your state of mind, hope you get better soon.

To Kelefua - What a gormless reply. It is because he is Aust that his name has been raised. Following the trend of the thread might help. If you still don't see it then I refer you to Jacko's post above which sums it up.

OtakiCraig just mentioned Michael Quinn. I think in the context of the subject matter Michael Quinn is quite relevant here. No one was pointing out he was an Aussie but another rugby player in trouble for digraceful behaviour involving children. If the fact that Michael Quinn is an Aussie upsets you then you should speak to him.

James. Wanted you to know what I sent Roar editors. The article isn't offensive but the headline writer obviously doesn’t have daughters. To the editor "For the Roar to put out that headline is a low point f or the web site. There is no funny side to committing a sex act in front of kids. I implore you to take it down. Ben"

Sadly Peter, the Roar is swamped by Kiwis, many of whom seem to be more than happy to denigrate all things Australian including those related to Australian rugby. Their tribalism is such that they will defend their fellow countrymen under any circumstances.

That more or less sums it up Jacko which is why I said it is all so futile.
