Stephen Larkham set for full-time Wallabies gig

By News / Wire

Stephen Larkham’s grooming as a future Wallabies coach has taken another step with his decision to accept a full-time role with the national side.

Larkham will depart as Brumbies head coach after next year’s Super Rugby season to become a full-time Wallabies assistant coach.

The 42-year-old, who’s been at the helm of the ACT-based franchise for the last two seasons, has been with the Australian side part-time as an attack coach.

The 102-cap former Wallabies playmaker has agreed to a three-year deal, keeping him in the national set-up until at least the end of the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

He has taken the Brumbies to the Super Rugby finals in both his years as head coach, losing in the quarter-finals this year after falling a win short of the season decider in 2015.

Larkham said he was committed to the Brumbies in 2017 and would help the franchise recruit a new coach after the season.

“It will be very tough to leave, but I will continue to be based in Canberra and involved with the Brumbies,” he said in a statement on Friday.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said Larkham was on the way to becoming a “world-class coach”.

Bakkies: It matters not where the Brumby record stands. they're a basket case moneywise, so I wouldn't bet on it not happening, ~ the Force are very likely more fluid in the 'folding stuff' than the Brumbies at the end of the day! The old story, you can't pay the bills, someone else has to!

Fionn: It's called Nepotism cobber and it never ever works, the old ''job for boys trick'' ~ The ARU does some dumb things but I doubt they'd do that, as they'd be achieving nothing but jumping back into the crap they were already in!

With Bernie Gordon Bray on Channel 7 interview stephen about tactics for the all blacks. They went to defeat the all blacks in the next test match when he was playing. Bernie has a great rugby brain. Shut up knockers and patient. Let the british and irish lions smash the all blacks in june next year. Thus giving the wallabies a chance in sydney and probably Brisvegas (Brisbane) to smash them also. We host two test matches next year. Oh thosae of little faith. Go you good thing. anyway the all blacks are nothing but cheats. Rcihard Loe I rest my case.

As a player, yes. But as a coach, where is the proof?

.........that may be true but even with consistency NZ would still dominate over us because the code commands such a status there. We wil NEVER be on par with NZ rugby and we should by now accept this fact. If anything we will lag further behind them and other nations as the Union struggles to survive beyond a niche code into the future.

Tax discussions aside, Accenture are also based where the Pro 12, IRB, Lions and 6 Nations have their headquarters. They don't have to go far for discussion with those organisations. The IRB did raise their concerns during the PRL driven European farce that it was no good for Rugby teams and countries driven out of competition

i think Accenture have their HO in Dublin ; most probable reason is the tax breaks such aa move allows or allowed in the past. i think there is a huge case against Apple to pay taxes in Ireland ; but it is stemming from EU litigation. also companies like Facebook Google are under investigation by EU. the funny thing is Ireland dont want the money - they just want the business and the associated development. the main reason for the development of Ireland was the tax breaks it allowed for foreign companies , and the associated growth from them. Accenture are one of the top IT consultants and also specialize in change management. Maybe that is why Sanzaaaaar went to them :)

Accenture have one of their main offices in Dublin and are also involved with change management. In typical Fairfax media fashion they're focusing one option which generates clicks or reads if you are one of the declining numbers who still purchases newspapers. There were many options recommended by Accenture to SANZAAR which including cutting a side each in SA and Australia. Further expansion is another option. What is no doubt guaranteed is that the conferences and playoffs will be restructured. Cutting teams reduces the number of matches on tv which puts the deals with Uncle Rupert and SuperSport at risk. This will also reduce the amount of money handed out from the tv pot to each union. There is no way SA would push for a reduction in their team numbers. They are stupid but not that stupid. Government pressure will see the Kings stay and the Cheetahs go. For those that know the Cheetahs are a Springbok factory and the Cats didn't work off the field due to their rivalry with the Lions. Two of the main reasons why they aren't getting better results is they're getting out bid when players are off contract and their player management is woeful (Juan Smith and Goosen case in point). What's interesting is that the IRFU don't allow their provinces to outbid each other when players are off contract as that will leave it heavily skewed towards Leinster and Ulster. Maybe SA Rugby need to look at that model to help the Cheetahs keep their best players. They need them to be strong as they play attacking Rugby. The Rugby played at the other sides Lions excluded doesn't suit their players and they often don't perform after leaving the Cheetahs. Next season Lood de Jager is off to the Bulls. He may struggle there. The ball handling skills that the players develop at the Cheetahs doesn't often happen at the Bulls. Adriaan Strauss certainly regressed in that area.

I still cant understand why sanzaaaar went to Accenture to study this. They are one of the best for IT consultancy (alongside IBM) , but not one for other things. they tend to provide consultancy on everything under the sun - but that is like Jack of all trades.... the known devils are Mckinsey Consulting , Boston Consulting Group (BCG) , Deloitte Consulting , E&Y , PWC , Bain , AT Kearney, .....

Stop scaremongering and believing what is written in the press, would you. Cutting teams is one of the many options being looked at by Accenture in their assessment of Sanzaar. It is not the single option. A cull in team numbers also has legal, financial and support for the game ramifications. Despite what the dunderheads in Sydney think it is quiet clear that ACT Rugby supporters will not transfer their support to the Tarts in Super Rugby. This is before you look at the Brumbies fans living in NSW who refuse to support them too. Force fans won't transition their support towards an eastern states team. Hell no. You will lose a Super Rugby support base and potentially see a drastic reduction in player numbers when the aspiration of playing for your home team is lost.

'The only reason the Brumbies made the finals was because Australia were guaranteed a spot.' Brumbies topped the Aus conference which of course should earn you a finals spot

I still think Larkham in his 'pomp' was the best flyhalf...did a lot with little (and within the rigid Eddie Jones structure...), but...he has done little as a coach. Under his tutelage the Brumbies were a team that played grafting attritional rugby....'Jake ball' without Jake... Does the path to promotion require the candidate "drink the coolade"....?

If you are ambitious you do want the number 1 position in coaching and some people regard the ABs head coach position is it, so waiting doesn't mean you are not ambitious , it means you are willing to do your time...patience is a virtue.

And that is a result of coaches willing to stay in the same role without progressing. Generally most coaches are ambitious, and most ambitious don't wait 8 years to be promoted. Joe Schmidt has been coaching professionally for 10 years in total when he took on the Ireland job. In fact how many coaches stay in one position for 8 years?

........this is completely different. Sanzar are restructuring Super Rugby. The ARU have apparently been pressured to look at culling options. One Aussie team will have to go and while early money was on the Force, attention has now turned to the Brumbies. I reckon the Rebels should be under scrutiny as well but hey, we all now Melbourne and Sydney are beyond reproach is all things sport.

There has never been foundation building re coaches in australia. Cheika is about the most experienced aust coach ever appointed having been head coach in the NH and SH at professional clubs. Most have coached the waratahs for a while and thats it. A few reds coaches are the exception.
