Preview:

Australia are behind the eight ball and looking for redemption coming into the Test in Hobart after being brushed aside by a resilient South Africa side in the series opener. Follow all the live scores, action and highlights from Day 1 of the second Test on The Roar from 10:30am (AEDT).

Australia has been hit with injuries and selection headaches since Nathan Lyon fell for the last wicket of the first Test.

The Australian preparation has been less than ideal as they have scrambled to figure out their final line up and try to find the confidence they lost after the defeat in Perth.

Despite dominating the opening day of the summer and leaving the visitors reeling, Australia was no match for the South Africans in the first Test after a miraculous turn around by the visitors.

The Proteas excelled in the WACA conditions despite the failings of Hashim Amla and the absence of skipper AB de Villiers.

The biggest marker on the second Test, however, will be the Tasmanian weather.

Hobart is expected to bring the rain during the opening two days at least, with scattered showers and overcast conditions dominating the skies above Blundstone Arena.

A forced draw here will spell the end of Australia’s series hopes and guarantee at worst a drawn series for the visitors.

This will be the first time South Africa has ever played in Hobart, a fixture that traditionally comes much later in the summer.

Australia has lost only twice in Tests that have taken place in Hobart and scored over 400 runs in the first innings four of the last five times they’ve played there.

Interestingly on the South African side, since making their debuts in the same game back in 2004, this will be the first time that the Proteas will be without either Dale Steyn or de Villiers.

Team News
Both sides have been hampered by injuries from the opening Test of the summer.

Australia has lost opener Shaun Marsh to a thumb injury while recurring back problems have hindered Peter Siddle’s return to international cricket after an eight-month layoff this year.

Paceman Joe Mennie has been favoured to make his debut in the Baggy Green to replace Siddle, despite being tonked all around Johannesburg by the same side in his ODI debut just two months ago.

Joe Burns is expected to return to the side with partner Dave Warner at the top of the order.

South Australian veteran Callum Ferguson has been added to the squad in the wake of some short performances from Mitch Marsh and the impending Hobart weather that could reduce the need for a genuine fifth bowler.

Adam Voges has been nursing a hamstring injury this week but is expected to make the final XI.

South Africa have just the one impending selection decision to take care off after spearhead Dale Steyn was ruled out of the series with a shoulder injury.

Morne Morkel is expected to be named in the side at the toss.

Prediction
Rain will be the biggest factor not only for the first day but for the outcome of the entire series. If the weather wipes out too much time and forces a draw in Hobart, then Australia can only tie the series at best.

The forecast will impact today’s play, the question is how much?

Whoever wins the toss should be looking to bowl in overcast swinging conditions. In the past Hobart has proven to be a happy hunting ground for Australia, but they’ll be fighting hard this time around.

I would imagine a lead of up to 200 minimum, then we bat in the second innings can we make more than 85 in the second innings who knows i would expect a similar result but a victory of over 250 runs or more more than likely?

Australia perhaps felt the day would be washed out and they did not seem to be in the game early on. Smith, with all his tension baggage had to stuck in, the rest was poor. I just think playing Marsh in this one would have fared better from the Aussies

Well that was certainly a thrill-a-minute day of cricket. It's nice to see the bowlers getting helpful conditions in Australia after several years of flat decks.

STUMPS ON DAY 1 There you have it, what a day of cricket to start the second Test. 15 wickets fell and Australia again find themselves trailing the South Africans and looking at a big mountain to climb to get back into this contest. South Africa take an 86 run lead into day 2 tomorrow with five wickets in hand. Philander tore through the Australian top order to end with a five-wicket haul. Captain Steve Smith was the only shining light in among the darkness, piecing together a strong 48 not out, but just kept running out of partners. He looked like he was playing on a different pitch to everyone else as the home side were even reduced to 4 for 8 at one point early morning. Hashim Amla steadied the ship for the Proteas after a Mitch Starc bombardment after tea, taking down the top order and keeping his side in contention, but Amla fought back with a confident looking 47 before losing his wicket in the final hour. AUS all out 85 (32.5 overs) SA 5/171 (55 overs)

54.6 Bavuma to face the last ball of the day. Angling in hard from around the wicket, cutting in towards off stump but Bavuma happily lets it go to end the day with his wicket in tact. SA 5/171

54.5 Back of a length getting underneath the ribs of de Kock, but he shuffles across to the offside and tucks it around the corner for another single to fine leg. SA 5/171

54.3 Coming in short again, this time holding the line outside off. De Kock gets back in the crease and jumps up to greet it, using soft hands to keep it down and find the grass. SA 5/170

53.5 FOUR!! Tossed up with a bit of flight outside off and Bavuma pounces on it, reaching out with the front foot and driving beautifully through the covers to the boundary. SA 5/168

53.2 Hits on the pad... BIG APPEAL!!! Lyon gets plenty of turn from outside off and Bavuma was caught back in the crease trying to play to the leg side. It bounced quite high but he was still deep in the crease. Smith doesn't review. Would have been very close. SA 5/164

53.1 Nathan Lyon returns to the attack with two overs left in the day. Gets a nice one turning back into the legs of Bavuma who has played Lyon quite well today after a shaky start. SA 5/164

52.2 EDGE THROUGH TO NEVILLE!!! Big appeal but the batsman and umpire are unmoved. He may have hit the ground as the ball went past chasing the wide delivery. Yes, replays show the toe of the bat clunking into the pitch. SA 5/163
