Highlights: England end 10-year drought against Springoks

By News / Wire

England ended their 10-year winless streak against South Africa in emphatic style on Saturday as they outclassed a desperately limited Springbok side for a 37-21 Twickenham victory that made it 10 wins out of 10 under coach Eddie Jones.

Two tries in each half, from Jonny May, Courtney Lawes, George Ford and Owen Farrell, were a fair reflection of England’s dominance against a team they had not beaten since 2006.

While England can celebrate ending a run of 11 defeats and a draw in the fixture, South Africa know they have a lot of rebuilding to do after slumping to their fifth defeat in six matches and never looking remotely like doing anything else.

The only time they were in the game was in the opening 20 minutes as Pat Lambie’s boot cashed in on England’s indiscipline.

“There’s plenty to work on, so that keeps us grounded,” said England captain Dylan Hartley.

“We conceded six penalties in the opening 20 minutes and that isn’t good enough. But we’re very happy to get that monkey off our back and I’m very proud of our guys.”

England claimed the opening try after 12 minutes when May, whose last Twickenham outing in December ended with a knee injury that ended his season, showed he had not lost any of his explosive pace, as he scooted to the corner from a clean lineout ball.

The game was effectively settled in the last five minutes of the first half after the Springboks lost key lock Eben Etzebeth following a clash of heads.

Elliot Daly, whose visionary left-footed kicking was always likely to add to England’s options, chipped a testing one behind the Springbok defence.

Mike Brown dived on it but failed to collect – or crucially touch the ball with his hand – and lock Lawes was on hand to dive on the ball to score his first international try on his 50th appearance.

Daly, who landed two halfway line penalties at Twickenham as a teenager when winning the Schools Cup final, smoothly did the same thing with the last action of the half to give England a 20-9 interval lead.

England came out firing in the second half and after a period of sustained pressure scrumhalf Ben Youngs left lock-turned flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit flailing with an outrageous dummy before setting up Ford for England’s third try.

Another Farrell penalty brought the 30 points up after 50 minutes and though South Africa scored in a rare attack through Johan Goosen there was no feeling that a comeback was on the cards.

A fired-up Youngs duly did Du Toit again with another dummy, Farrell the beneficiary this time.

Willie le Roux had the final say with a try in the corner but it was little consolation on a day where England’s progress under Jones took another step forward.

“We just couldn’t put any pressure on the England team and we felt it the whole game,” South Africa captain Adriaan Strauss said.

“We’ll have a hard look at ourselves on Monday and we’ll fight back.”

Superba , in his first season at Stormers he took them from 10th in 2009 to the quarters in 2010. They were SA's best perfoming side in the competition 2011, 2012. He has won 4 Currie cup titles with them .Also may I remind was assistant coach to World champion boks 2007 . We need some perspective here. I still maintain he is not at international standard ie. test rugby . But more importantly he does not have the right people surrounding him ..

If Coetzee is " not a bad coach " then what is he ? Couldn't win a Superrugby title despite some 5 shots at it as Stormers coach . I think he is a lousy coach who lacks insight into his own shortcomings . No game plan . Weird selections . Omits Janse v Rensburg our top centre. SA deterioratng under his watch . He needs to ask for help .

Strauss was made captain because he is unlikely to be outspoken . Has a very quite and conservative personality. At the time it was widely accepted that he wasn't even the 3rd best hooker in the country. The rugby bosses thought he would not need to be controlled... He is a decent man and I would love to know his real reasons for his sudden retirement. Unfortunately for the very reasons above , you are unlikely to get it from him... Can only speculate. And Biltongbek , don't give up , your voice is needed. A few days ago I commented that Sunnette Viljoen had not yet received her Bonus for medalling at the Olympics due to her criticism of the Sports Ministry. Well a day later she got paid. Did my comment have anything to do with it.. I doubt it, but mine and all the others combined did.

Don't give up BB. Everything can't be solved but the quota issue could be solved and that would be a start. But it will take some real smartness, organizing and iron will. Quotas is totally against the law's of sport. You can't be a member of the Olympic family and have racial quotas. Rugby is part of the Olympic family now so that is the place to start. I have other ideas too, how to fight quotas and make enough noise to put pressure on the SA government so they will back down on this issue. I was fighting against apartheid from a distance and did what I could (my actions probably made no difference what so ever, but I was fighting). I am ready to fight again. If you are serious BB, contact Patrick (the editor of The Roar) and ask for my email.

Anyway, I am done talking. I have nothing positive to say about our sport anymore, rambling on like a grumpy old man doesn't achieve anything.

Government doesn't give two s...ts about transforming sport, if they did they would have developed infrastructure in schools during the last 21 years. They have done diddly squat.

It is so weird that A Strauss remains captain when he has announced that he retires from the Springboks in two weeks time. If Strauss had been captain for 5-6 years I could see the logic that he would remain captain until his final test.

Totally agree . Rugby is targeted because it is so high profile and vulnerable to political interference. Their is an increasing feeling in me that it is more sinister than just transformation. I also feel that Afrikaners are the real target.

2016-11-14T10:26:41+00:00

Dave, I have no problem with transformation, not in the work place or otherwise. But transformation in my eyes are equal opportunity. Equal opportunity is the same avenues to learn skills must be there for everyone. Whether you excell at what you do has f all to do with transformation. To compete in sport at the highest level is not about equal opportunity, if it was there would be no sponsors and no big broadcasting revenue becuase noboy watches the Olympics to see who can take the longest to get over the line, there are nobody watching how low can you go, but rather how high can you jump. Nobody, not even those demanding transformation that watches a losing team. It is not in our nature to do so. So you have to ask yourself one question. Are they simply out to destroy the percieved white man sport? Explain to me why is there no demand for transformation in golf? Why do we not see the demand for better representation during the SunCity golf tournament? Transformation is giving every child the equal opportunity to play sport. That is where it must begin. Then there is tranformation. What you see now is window dressing to appease the masses and BS their way through another term in office, nothing more. But they should tread carefully, you take away an Afrikaner's pride , you take away his love for his country.

Biltongbek , I'm not being apologetic for Alistairs poor performance , just putting a different spin on it. He should not be the only one taking all the heat for the trash we are witnessing from the Boks , but the rest of the political Ass kissers and incompetents that got him (and his assistants) there in the first place. They should be given names and also publically hung out to dry.... And yes I'm also angry..... and embarrassed by what should never be happening.

2016-11-14T09:54:23+00:00

Exactly, quota Inmpacts on all levels, not just those who are selected.

2016-11-14T09:49:20+00:00

Well then I suggest for "non rugby reasons" let us all be polite and walk away from South African sport. When sponsors, politicians and those with a vested interest in rugby supporting their families finanancially walk away for what will most definitely be "non rugby reasons" and rugby starts from a bare slate, we can then return to rugby. Because right now, we are being politely embarressed by all and sundry. Nice doesn't cut it. I am so bloody sick and tired with the justifications and pure BS that is happening in South Africa I would have f'ed off if I had a chance. There is nothing left to be proud of in SA.

in my opinion Coetzee is not a bad coach. He is also not an international class coach. Its very unfair on the SA rugby public to expect us to be patient while the coaches are learning on the job. We have on the sidelines , or having been sidelined the likes of Jake White, Heyneke Meyer , Nick Mallett , Johan Ackermann . These are the only guys who can compete against Jones, Hanson, Cheika , Schmidt etc. They would also need highly skilled defensive/ backline/forward coaches etc. to support them . Not some guys with little or no track record even at SA provincial level , let alone Superugby level.... And one more thing ...Just an observation , but Adriaan Strauss the Captain looks seriously out of condition.

Alistair Coetzee is an incredibly nice person ( I,ve met him ) . A real old school gentleman. For this reason alone I am loathe to criticize him as it was quite clear from the outset that he was not yet ready for the job. He was chosen for reasons other than pure rugby ones. I suppose if he was brutally honest with himself he would have turned down what is anyway the most difficult coaching job in world rugby .. But hey would I turn down a multi million rand job .. Just because I want to do the right thing... I doubt it... Let them fire me later and pay me out . He had no say in his assistant coaches (also chosen for non-rugby reasons). The team surely has picked up on this . Etsebeth is on his way out overseas and the rest look like they really don't want to be on the park . Problem for the SA rugby so called administrators is that 2 major sponsors have jumped ship and surely more to come. Wonder where those big paychecks are going to come from.

Well, two 'not really's' here. First, of course they'll care and hope it's stopped by anyone. Hurts the Brand if nothing else. But that's way too far off to even contemplate yet and this England set up is still not close enough to the current AB performances. I don't see it happening this time around. Which takes me to the second not really. Eddie's post match comment is really no different to every player interview or coaches position. The only real difference is that there's more reality to his. England do need to get a lot better to challenge the next RWC or No.1 spot with any confidence and they have the players available to get much better.

Not really, if England get the record the ABs would welcome the challenge with open arms. Those sort of things are to be embraced not avoided, and the ABs won't be wanting anyone to do anything for them, it's not how they roll...? I do like Eddies post match comments, how he keeps stating that England are 'nowhere near' where they need to be after a convincing win against SA. The way he consistently understates their ability has been a master stroke, regardless of whether he's actually correct or not, because now there's this accepted expectation that they'll get better, whether they actually do or not, and that has huge benefits. Very smart coaching and media work. The balance of power for the Oz rematch is clearly still with England and Cheika and his side still have a lot of ground to make up...yet here we are going on about Foley versus Quade still...I don't know.?

This weekend, the Quota wasn't relevant, particularly. In a larger sense, it's omnipresent, and sends "wrong colour" players (or kids destined to be good players) overseas. For now, let's focus on how bad the actual coaching team is, they are coaching great players like PSDT and EE and Combrinck DOWN to a lower level.
