Boot Russia out of international sport

By David Lord / Expert

“The Russian Olympic team corrupted the London Games on an unprecedented scale, the extent of which will probably never be fully established.”

Those chilling words from World Anti-Doping Agency special investigator Professor Richard McLaren must never be allowed to wither on the vine.

“Over 1000 Russian athletes competing in summer, winter and Paralympic sport can be identified as being involved in or benefiting from manipulations to conceal positive doping tests,” McLaren also said.

Professor McLaren and Russian whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov are two very brave men who have taken on the might of Russia in the search for the truth.

Now it’s up to IOC President Thomas Bach to act with the power vested in his position, and boot Russia out of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020 – and lead the move to strip Russia of the 2018 FIFA World Cup hosting rights.

Award the World Cup to England, who should have won the original bid. England has the infrastructure to host the world’s biggest event overnight, if necessary.

It’s beyond belief the Russians have thumbed their noses at the West by their massive systematic cheating, and must pay the ultimate penalty.

Take the lead from the Paralympics chairman Phillip Craven, who had the balls to ban all Russian athletes from Rio.

What beggars belief is how the Russians expected to get away with doping on such a grand scale. That had to be the height of arrogance.

The Sochi example was the most arrogant, with tainted samples swapped for clean samples through a ‘mouse hole’ between the walls in the Olympic testing laboratory.

And where did doping on such a grand scale start?

From the Russian Ministry of Sport, through to the Russian Anti-Doing Agency – that’s a hoot – to the Centre of Sports Preparation for Russian teams, the Moscow lab, and the Russian Federal Security Service.

That’s the whole ball game, everyone was involved.

Goodbye, Russia.

I would ban WADA from sports not Russia. What a sanctimonious bunch of turkeys. The drugs in sport issue is a complete hypocrisy based on the false assumption that you can have a level playing field - mixed with an anti drugs crusade. A better option would be to regulate performance enhancing drugs, not ban them.

Absolute rubbish comrade. Keep stirring up anti Russian sentiment, it'll help the masses think war with Russia is a necessary evil.

I would say Essendon and Cronulla are worse than Russia, they were actively injecting athletes not avoiding testing them. Arguing the punishment they got severe is a joke compared to missing the Olympics is effectively a 4 year ban for athletes. Its a simple equation if yoi want to ban RUssia and punish a whole country for the actions of some, then there is no worry doing it to Essendon and Cronulla for 4 years. Now people want to wipe out 2 Olympics thats 8 years of an athletes life and their whole career, then apply that 8 year ban to Essendon and Cronulla.

Yes time to ban Russia. Next up is the USA where many have been drugged to the eyeballs for years. We need a Russian style investigation into Americas Olympic drug cheats, the likes of Tyson Gay. Since abnormal hormone profiles are a pretty good indication that something is amiss I would like to see the athlete responses to their profiles being released. The myriad of reasons would fill books. The drug testing is obviously pointless if not done independently and all Russian testing was bogus. If professionally done the bar scans on the samples would not be available to anyone but the original tester initially and stored . There are cross examination samples done to verify readings. So the whole testing regime is geared to and has failed. It is hopelessly unprofessional and like in Lance Armstrongs case, you just bully your way through. So why can't a well funded organisation test properly and independently. Probably because they are all corrupt like NSW politicians.

northener, Putin has the sporting world bluffed with the exception of Sebastian Coe who has banned Russia indefinitely from all track and field meets, and Phillip Craven who had the balls to ban all Russians from the Rio Paralympics. And with Putin's close mate, the equally corrupt Sepp Blatter banned from all IOC action for six years, the noose is slowly closing.

I doubt that Trump will need to do anything. Neither the OIC nor FIFA would be prepared to stand up to Putin. He's got all the cards - he could expose exactly how Russia got the Winter Olympics and the World Cup.

I'm not arguing with you on that - just pointing out that Ahmed is wrong to compare a doping scheme sanctioned by the Russian government and their anti-doping agencies with a couple of teams undertaking illicit doping programs and being penalized for it. Cronulla got off lightly, Essendon has paid a very big price for their incompetent oversight - loss of key players for a year, lawsuits, fines, legal bills - quite a different thing to the way the Russians have been treating their sporting bodies.

David, good luck banning Russia from international sport. The forthcoming president of the United States is very friendly with Putin. It's not going to happen.

There were no bans for the clubs Essendon and Cronulla who ran systematic drug cheating. They should have been wiped out for 4 years from their respective competitions and their should have been jail sentences for their executives plus Dank for unauthorised human drug experimentation.

I doubt FIFA will have the stomach for rescheduling the WC. I do see that Sochi has just been stripped of the Skeleton and Bobsled world championships. Good. Maybe Putin's property holdings in Sochi won't be worth quite as much as he expected.

The Essendon and Cronulla players all got bans for taking those substances. And you can hardly argue that the Australian government was involved in covering up the supplements scheme. As for your link, it sounds like something straight out of the Russian Ministry of Communications.

I'm not stating that I firmly believe there is something fishy going on, but I do think it warrants further investigation. For example this link here http://theduran.com/agenda-russian-olympics-doping-scandal/ discusses the politics of the scandal. I found it rather interesting during the essendon/cronulla supplements scandal that athletes were being injected with supplements that were rather similar to banned substances. And this occurs in Sports and countries all over the world. The Russians do their research into possible supplements and so do the usa.

It is a bit late to strip them of WC2018, but is it the Russian name you would like removed David. What are your thoughts on Russians training and competing under the IOC banner? A lot of them are involced but there are also a lot who arent. Do you ban Russian nationals competing or those who train under the Russian regime.

Just watched an interview with Mikhail Gorbachev, the eighth and final leader of the Soviet Union who is now 85 years of age. who made it crystal clear President Putin is well aware of everything that goes on in Russia. That makes Putin just as guilty as all the Russian sporting involved in the greatest mass drug cheating ever seen. All the more reason to boot Russia out of all sport worldwide.

Balderdash. The Russians were engaging in "sports science" before it was a science anywhere else. They've had 40 years of practice at the illicit use of drugs and of working around the primitive testing regimes in place. Now, testing is a little more sophisticated and they've been caught red-handed, doping on an industrial scale. And the national government has been up to its ears in the scam. Athletes get two or four year bans for doping: I see no reason why the complicit sports federations in Russia shouldn't get the same.

Ban Russia, US and Great Britain There is no doubt that the other two have exploited TUEs and cheated the system. That would leave Australia with its biggest medal tally of all.
