NRL guarantees John Grant is here to stay

By News / Wire

Under-fire ARL commission chairman John Grant will continue in his post for the foreseeable future after striking a deal with the NRL clubs calling for his head.

On a day of high drama at Rugby League Central, Grant, NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg and the commission agreed to a funding arrangement to appease the clubs.

It was speculated that the clubs would demand that Grant would stand down by this time next year however Greenberg said an exit date hadn’t been negotiated.

“There is no time limit on his tenure at all,” Greenberg said.

“John will serve as long as the members want him to serve.”

Grant’s relationship with the clubs and state leagues looked beyond repair after they called the emergency general meeting where they planned to sack him.

The two parties now have the difficult task of getting back on the same page, something Grant always insisted was achievable despite the public campaign to axe him.

Greenberg argued that his offsider always had the best interests of the game at heart and had the difficult task of appeasing opposing groups who were all competing for a slice of the $1.8 billion TV deal.

“This is not a new phenomenon in sport where the distribution of funding creates debate,” Greenberg said.

“Rugby league is no different to most others. And today was the outcome of a couple of difficult weeks for the game.”

You have to remember that the figures mentioned above are for 2018 and beyond. In this broadcasting term, 2016 the revenue is basically halved! You haven't considered the extra costs to the affiliated states, the Bunker, Refereeing, medical, and so on. Check out the financial report. 2014 https://www.nrl.com/portals/nrl/radeditor/documents/nrl_annual_report_2014b.pdf 2015 https://www.nrl.com/portals/nrl/RadEditor/Documents/2016/NRL%20Annual%20Report_2015.pdf The 2016 report isn't out as yet

It surprises me because the largest cost to a services business is the staff payroll, so I'd be interested to see the breakdown of other expenses at NRL HQ.

The Board picks the chief and no amount of posturing from the clubs can get him sacked...that's why they introduced distance between the clubs and Board. The clubs can feed journos all they like but in the stage managed world of RL headlines are everything

That $73M is for total expenditure NOT just for their wages bill.

I am fairly sure that the $100M figure was being reported but I doubt whether the NRL has made that figure public. We will wait and see!

Kent's numbers are nothing like the audited financial statements (which are available on the NRL site). Typical News dross

HQ costs $73M to operate and apparently has 200 employees? What other costs are included we will probably never know. (Noticed typo, Clubs S/be 16x$13M ea 208)

Max, is that $73M for 200 employees at NRL HQ accurate ? That's an average of $365,000 per staff member.

I agree Hats but I have read conflicting accounts of just how much grassroots will increase. One stated what you said - $30M to $100M whilst another said an increase of 65% which equates to about 50M. I'm hoping it's 100M.

I dont know if I am imagining it ,but weren't there three tacklers in the tragic tackle of Alex McKinnon, for too long Rugby League has been let get too brutal ,I.E. head high tackles, shoulder charges ,gang tackles ,yes I played when the tackle was from the hip down to the ankles, now its too brutal and that is why parents are guiding there kids away from getting run over by massive Island descent kids built like tanks at a very young age playing League and Union. What was once a game for young boys to learn Teamwork,Sportsmanship has now become for many a nightmare. The most important figure in all that is the Grassroots figure with all of the controversy and ALL of the Negative "CLUBS are greedy" articles lately! Grassroots has increased from $30M to $100M, a significant increase indeed! So all of the NRL spin about the grassroots is just that as they are in fact being looked after, after all. The last lot of cash given to the grassroots was mainly spent on updating canteens and change rooms. Next, they can improve their playing fields and perhaps put some cash into updating their equipment!

Last week Paul Kent delivered the following on expending Broadcast Revenue of $470M pa. $M Sales cost 70 Clubs 16x$130ea 208 NSWRL 6 QRL 6 HQ (200 employees) 73 Grassroots 100 Surplus 7 Total 470 Scott Woodward recently asked the question regarding revenue from Sportsbet. Perhaps that is where Grant found extra funds? The secrets remain secret at Spendthrift Castle. It would be interesting to know how insurance costs have been treated.
