Tell us what you think: Dump Mitch Marsh? Who would you take to India? Has rugby gone soft?

By Riordan Lee / Editor

We want to pick your brain for tomorrow morning’s breakfast episode of Roar LIVE.

Roarers had some spectacular questions for Mickey Edwards for last week’s episode and we’d love to hear from you all again.

This week the all-Roar panel of Patrick Effeney, Riordan Lee and Daniel Jeffrey is asking and answering three big questions:

1. Should Mitch Marsh have been selected go to India?
2. If you could boot any of the Test squad off the plane to Mumbai, who would it be, and why?
3. What do you think of rugby’s new tackling laws, have they gone too far?

Chuck your opinions and questions in the comments and we’ll get to them tomorrow!

Roar Live will be streamed Thursday morning on The Roar’s Facebook page and also on the site at 8:00am (check the homepage). It will also be available as a podcast on Soundcloud and iTunes.

Yes. Marsh is done. I dont care if he's had shoulder concerns; with that said, I don't have anything against him as a bloke and I certainly don't get enjoyment over people losing contracts, but stop selecting him. It still feels like we're a batsman short. I'd leave a spinning all rounder home, plead with Smith to have a bowl more and strengthen the middle.

Certainly dump mitch marsh. He has hardly proved himself as an allrounder. His bowling is adequate but his batting is woeful. Australia needs an allrounder with th x factor so we have to keep looking until we find mr right!

There's a story around that Pat Cummins and James Pattinson are being considered for the second half of the India tour if there are problems in the fast bowling department. Probably better if they play out the season in the Sheffield Shield. Now we learn that Mitch Marsh was picked as a bowling all-rounder. It's obvious that James Faulkner would be better in that role. The idea that our spinners can crack the Indian batsman is ridiculous, given past performances. Reckon they'll pick Maxwell for the first Test, with Lyon and O'Keefe the spinners. But it would probably make more sense to have Bird back up Hazlewood and Starc, and leave out one of the spinners, preferably Lyon. O'Keefe would probably do a better job. Don't see the point in having both Agar and Swepson on tour. They would be better off with a workhorse medium-pacer, but not Joe Mennie.

1. Should Mitch Marsh have been selected go to India? No. Unfortunately his form is poor. He seems like he lacks confidence and he needs to go back to Sheffield Shield and start again. 2. If you could boot any of the Test squad off the plane to Mumbai, who would it be, and why? Mitch Marsh. Poor form. I wish you said anyone, then it would be Pat Howard. He's been around too long. 3. What do you think of rugby’s new tackling laws, have they gone too far? I guess they are trying to protect players a bit more, considering players are now suing their leagues because of dangerous tackles in other sports (rugby league).

The way we won in India in 2004 was playing on Indian's egos with a good pace attack. So why cant we do the same this time with Starc, Hazlewood and Bird. Set a deep point and a deep squareleg and keep things tight. Indians will fall on their own egos. Do we have the discipline to do it like the pace trio of McGrath, Gillespie and Kasper ?

Australia is divided by football codes, not cricket. Do not presume that cricket supporters like rugby just because rugby supporters like cricket.

As always Dane, a hilarious and profoundly unhelpful response. Wouldn't have it any other way.

No I didn't. I said no to Handscombe as a wicketkeeper. But I said retain him as a batsman. It's all there - have another read.

Hmmm…. I attend Premier Rugby games at our home ground all season. I socialise with around a dozen of the guys who also attend the games throughout the year. Almost to a man they are all cricket fans over the Summer with as strong opinions on matters cricket related like whether Mitch Marsh is a liability, or can Wade keep to spinners, as they have opinions concerning whether Hooper and Pocock should be in the same Wallabies 15. I reckon cricket transcends the borders of Rugby, League, AFL and Soccer…

That's funny. You say to dump Wade because he's not a real gloveman and then go in to bat for Hanscombe as keeper, really funny, you a funny guy you know!!!

Mitch Marsh is there as a third seam bowling option who can strengthen the batting at the same time.He will be competing with Lyon, Agar, Swepson and bird for the fourth bowling position after Maxwell comes in at 6 once one of the batsmen gets dropped. If everyone struggles like in Sri Lanka he could still get a go in the top 6 by series end.

Aussie cricket misses Watto and it's obvious the selectors want Mitch Marsh to fill the void. Form counts for nothing here and you can expect a mixed bag from Mitch. More importantly, he'll be hell bent on dividing opinion and more so the playing group if he's to cement a decade of free global travel. Focus on the subtleties. This tour will be about Mitch perfecting the front foot plant and subsequent bemused head shake.

I'm not usually an early riser. But if there's something that will get me up before 2pm, it's live Roar for breakfast. Re: India. Can we kick anyone off the plane who doesn't bowl spin? Concerned we might be travelling light in that regard. And before it's suggested, I've already checked Shaun Marsh's Cricinfo profile and he bowls left-arm orthodox.

I'll take Faulkner or Stoinis over Marsh. Fultime Belmore.

Marsh and Maxwell were both picked for what will the the number 6 spot. On form, neither should have been picked. I would have picked batsmen for the 6 position. Cartwright, Lehman, Patterson all come to mind. Wade will see our undoing in India keeping to spinners on a spinning wicket. Play the same top 6, Whiteman or Nevill in as keeper at 7. If the selectors want to go into the first test with two quicks and two spinners, fine. If they want to go in with three specialist quicks and one spinner, Smith can lend a hand as a second spinner (or third if they go with two spinners). On the rugby high tackle rule, I think it will take a season to settle down. High tackles are treated more seriously in union than in league so the problem will be in what is careless, reckless or deliberate. There will be little change in penalties given, the outcome of these penalties will be interesting.

Replace Wade with a real, actual, genuine, skilled gloveman, NOT a batsman doing a bad keeper impersonation. So that means no to Handscombe (keep him as a batsman of course), Nevill, Dunk, Paine and Whiteman. If you want someone to keep to the spinners and the quicks, and to do it well, replace Wade with Chris Hartley. Does it really matter if he doesn't average 45 with the bat? Hartley won't give his wicket away. We'll probably be 4 for SFA in most matches anyway, so one extra stick-wielder won't make up for the river of byes the popular options will concede.

Don't mix cricket with rugby. They have entirely different supporter groups, with only a small overlap. And take James Faulkner instead of Mitchell Marsh. Maybe someone can get the lesser Marsh dumped from the squad, perhaps by introducing him to some Indian alcohol and then inviting him to some fancy parties, so that Faulkner can come in as a "replacement".

Mitch Marsh needs to dominate in state cricket before a Test recall. Faulkner would be better suited to the conditions. Lubrechange, Bancroft, Turner, would all benifit greatly from the experience of touring India at this stage of their careers. One or more could rise to be Test level in the next few seasons.
