NRL integrity unit denied access to James Roberts nightclub vision

By News / Wire

The NRL’s probe into allegations of misbehaviour against James Roberts have been complicated by a Gold Coast nightclub refusing to hand over video footage.

The league’s integrity unit is looking into claims the Brisbane star forcefully pulled a woman’s hair at the Love Nightlife nightclub early on Sunday morning.

NRL investigators have reportedly spoken to the 23-year-old Roberts, his accuser and nightclub staff as part of their probe.

But the nightclub’s owner said he was legally unable to provide footage to the NRL, hindering efforts to piece together Roberts’ actions, News Corp Australia reports.

“It’s against the law under the Liquor Act until it becomes an official investigation,” Love Nightlife’s Tony Rigas told News Corp.

“It has to be an official investigation by the QPS (Queensland Police Service) or Liquor Licensing before I can do anything.”

The alleged incident has put centre Roberts’ off-field behaviour in the spotlight once again.

He was fined $20,000 by the Broncos last year following allegations he abused a female staff member in a drunken incident at Brisbane’s Normanby Hotel when he was refused service.

He checked in to a rehabilitation facility in Thailand at the end of last year’s NRL season.

That's a bit of a slippery slope. It looks like Roberts might get lucky but if we start sacking players on rumours (which until this is proven to be true is what it is) it will provide clubs with the easiest of routes to clean out their roster placing the burden of proof onto the player rather than the organisation. it may not be as high as the burden of proof needed to convict but there still needs to be something other than he said she said.

Are you saying that you could get a guilty verdict when no complainant will come forward and no physical evidence will be tendered.

But if you can establish he's brought the game into disreptue without the footage and he gets a right of reply then he's gotten natural justice. The burden of proof for an employment policymatter isn't the same as a criminal one.

Providng "something" happened (doesn't need to be to a prohibited level) it would be in her best interest if she was trolling for money to make a complaint and then drop it later.

Getting a little ahead of ourselves aren't we....I don't know how you will establish guilt without direct regard to the CCTV footage... while I agree Roberts has green blood.. Natural Justice...He is entitled to it regardless of intellect

Regardless of the footage, if Roberts is guilty, sack and deregister the grub

Maybe she doesn't want to get dragged through a court case where the end result will probably be her being dragged through the mud and him coming out like an angel. If it is an out of court settlement, then it wouldn't be the first time would it that clubs have paid to protect their so called stars.

The police can't look at it without a warrant and they can't get a warrant unless she makes a formal complaint. If the footage was leaked and the police used it to press charges it'd be thrown out. It's a very tight rope that the police need to walk on. However I agree we shouldn't just assume she's embellishing or lying. I'd guess she just doesn't want to deal with it.

Or maybe she doesn't want to put up with the nightmare that a bunch of highly paid attorneys will put her through. The thing is, if there's evidence, I'd have thought the police could file charges, with or without her complaint. So, get the police to have a look at that CTV coverage and decide whether there's enough there. Let's not automatically assume that the woman is lying because the guy has no previous at all and it would all be so out of character.

Money and lawyers...............they all want a pay out and not go through the transparency of a proper police investigation in case they are proved wrong. But still, he is a retard if he thinks he can go out of the *&^%% and not get into trouble........FFS wake up. I love league but the players stuff it up time and time again............

Yet the alledged victim was speaking with reporters happily giving her version of events. Seems a bit odd that she will complain via media and social media but wont lay a complaint. Maybe she has been offered an out of court settlement

To date, the alleged victim has been reluctant/refused to lodge a complaint.

Just ask the person to report an assault complaint to the police, that will then solve Tony Rigas's legal problem.
