Utilities to rise in value if squad size increases

By ScottWoodward.me / Roar Guru

The likelihood of an unchanged extended squad named each Tuesday will increase the value of players with utility value.

The present NRL rule is that each club must name 17 players on Tuesday, but they are free to name an entirely different 17 one hour prior to kick off.

Many club’s abuse this rule to give them a perceived edge by not naming a key player who may have been out injured but has recovered quicker than expected.

In reality, there is no edge as it is virtually impossible to “surprise” the professionals and the market is very accurate come game day.

The NRL CEOs are expected to debate this change in squad size during the Auckland Nines this week, and importantly, no player who is not named can miraculously turn up and play just before kick-off.

The likely outcome, according to Fairfax, will be to extend the named list from 17 to 21, and then trimmed to 19 after the last training run.

This will mean if a club suffers and injury from one of the named 17 they can only replace him with someone who has been named between 18 and 19.

This could cause a problem for clubs who may suffer an injury to a hooker or a winger who may not have a backup in the named squad. A player like the Cowboys’ Ben Hampton who can play hooker and anywhere in the backline will increase in value. The Warriors’ Nath Roach, a former centre now hooker, will also be valuable.

Small forwards who can also play hooker will be sought after.

Many are against any change in policy, but the reality is that as soon as the NRL held out their hands and accepted a product fee from bookmakers they had to implement stronger integrity protection mechanisms.

Also Fantasy Footy has introduced a new mum and dad demographic to the NRL, and to have an “unnamed player” running out and play angers the new fan-base.

This has nothing to do with gambling as many Fantasy games are for fun and increase viewer participation.

Many fans consider that horse racing is the gambling sport and rugby league is just a spectator sport, but the reality is that hundreds of millions is gambled on the NRL each year and the games administrators want their fair wack.

Like it or not the goal posts have changed which has prompted debate over when team lists should be named and is it fixed.

Can you imagine Winx trotting out on the weekend when she has not been named in any form guide and already millions have been wagered on the race?

Can you imagine Johnathan Thurston being named for the Cowboys one hour before kick off when fans did not expect him back for another two weeks?

The comparison between racing and footy will anger purists, but the incremental gambling dollar has changed the sporting landscape and the NRL are prudent to ensure any skulduggery is minimised.

There is no doubt that we may see a non-specialist winger or hooker start a game if a club suffers an injury after their last training run, but the bonus is that we will see a rise in players with utility value, a switch from the recent growth of big and strong.

Most clubs choose to fill their bench with impact forwards and a backup hooker, but if the final interchange is inflated to 19 there will be a spot for an outside back.

But Scott that "4 giants on the bench" can be easily fixed ....scrap the interchange rule ! Return to the 4 man replacement rule . Once you are taken off the field you are finished for the day. Then we will see a greater variety of players both on the field & on the bench with more 80 minute players in demand and tiring defences to be exploited by good attacking sides.

Walter, Players who are versatile enough to play multiple positions will be valuable. The Panthers are very well placed in this area.

Is this a case of fantasy changing reality? The need to check fantasy teams an hour before kickoff is a pain in the neck as is game playing about naming injured players who do not front or not naming injured players who do front. This change should give followers of the game further insight into coaches thinking about second ranking squad members and provide some recognition for those players. But what about players playing out of position?

My biggest gripe with the TAB is when you place a bet using a terminal and the fixed odds drop less than 10 seconds after trying to get the bet on. Not once has the TAB advised that the odds had shifted in my favour, and offered me better odds. It's a complete scam.

Dean Most agencies and exachanges offer take outs and again the margin is very much against the punter.

No one I did not know Mr. Windross, but no thinking person can say that having an exotic wager with a huge take out % in favour of the TAB will be more profitable than not betting at all. That is point blank incorrect and you are not doing Allen Windross' legacy any good by saying it, if in fact that is what he said.

I thought Sportsbet offered cashout prior to the start of any race or event. From memory it was an 85% return of the initial bet.

I can' t remember the exact details, but continuing with the sub long term gave the punter a small win. Even if it was 0.5% it was still greater then breakeven with the refund. Windross knew what he was talking about. And I think the quaddie takeout rate, inclusive of roundings is about 21-22%

Just go with the NFL system of reporting injury status of players. Clubs get fined if they don't. So Probably- 75% or better chance of playing Possible - 50 -75% chance of playing Unlikely - Under 50% chance of playing. It's not that hard. Teams will then name the 18/19th players as the ones who are in that possible/probable range. Updates on injury status Tuesday/Thursday/Match Day. It also gives punters a good idea of the team health.

No one If Allen Windross' study really did say punters are worse off then he is an idiot. If punters get their money back them they break even, but if the bet goes ahead on another runner then they become part of a pool with a likely 30 -35% take out which mathematically means the punter has no hope of winning long term.

That's not a TAB rule, it was introduced by the principal clubs back in the day. The sub in the quaddie for example, is the horse with the most money placed on it (in the quaddie pool, not the win pool). it's pari-mutual, TABs dont' care if you win or lose. The late Allen Windross did a study of the effect of paying out on 3 winners if there is a scratching and having no sub, but it worked out the punter will be worse off long term

NFL teams must have an active 53 man roster for the game week. 90 minutes before kickoff 7 are removed, so only 46 are suited up for the game

Ferrett Thanx mate, I am looking forward to how Recruitment Managers re-act to the change. As always, the good ones, and there are not many, will get the balance right.

Dean Wrong mate. Punters cannot cancel if a jockey gets replaced. To make it even worse, the greedy TAB actually name an alternative runner on your behalf if your runner happens to be a late out and in a leg of an exotic which is normally the favourite. Your sub idea has merit. Your final initiative will never happen and should not. Everyone knows if they bet early they take a risk, its called "buyer beware". As you know you can bet on Round 1 now and that same market will stay until kick off.

Hi jeff yes mate I agree. A lock is basically a prop, or a middle.

on that note Scott, do you think programs and fantasy teams should stop with the old position names? there are edge forwards and middle forwards. a lock is a lot different to second rowers in most teams and calling them backrowers is deceiving
