Spiro speaks on Super Rugby's format and whether Cheika's job is one the line

By The Roar / Editor

Join Roar Rugby on Friday at 1pm (AEDT), as we discuss all the biggest rugby issues with expert columnist Spiro Zavos live on Facebook.

As the season looms, we’ll get Spiro’s thoughts on the Wallabies and Super Rugby in 2017.

After an inconsistent year which peaked with a promising Spring Tour, what are the expectations surrounding the Wallabies? What must they achieve in order for the season to be considered a success?

And despite having extended his contract midway through last year until 2019, just how safe is coach Michael Cheika’s job?

We’ll also get Spiro’s take on whether the Super Rugby format needs to change, and how the Australian conference will shape up.

Be sure to get involved in the conversation, which will be streamed live on Roar Rugby’s facebook page from 1pm (AEDT) on Friday.

Spiro is Greg Crowden Mark 2. Crowden loved Eddie, then pushed and pushed to get him axed, then when he was axed he wrote how great he is and especially after the last WC

Markus i should have clarified...With wallaby wing and( VC) Horne back and Nayavororo ( TAHS ) Sefa and DHP already playing wing, id say he is round about equal 5th with Korobiete and Speight..They are all in the same boat I reckon...... Remember the TAH bias in selections in 2016 ??

Sixth ranker winger behind who? Tomane was the best Australian outside back in Super Rugby last season up until his injury. As much as players like Haylett-Petty improved throughout the year, he Hodge and Naivalu would probably not have even seen a Wallabies jersey if Tomane was fully fit for the test season.

Certainly odd when you look back at his articles of a few years ago and see just how hard Spiro was pushing him as the messiah and solution to all of the ARU's woes. If coverage and commentary have any influence on proceedings at all, Spiro would have to accept some responsibility for placing Cheika in the role...

P2R2-you got it right when you said "hype". u believed the hype which is all heresay/guesswork. the truth of the matter is England deservedly #2 and possibly good enough to take #1 spot. cheika took a rabble toxic environment to the WC finals in less than a whole season. aus are lucky to get the #3 spot. i thought the meltdowns that cost the game werent all cheika's fault. the bulk of the onus falls on the players shoulders. cheika is limited to the cattle he has available. 2017 is still a year for developing. you want him to fail and have already written him off. i cant understand why because u have no one else to replace him. if u think about it, if cheika gets cut the next coach will be far worse. Eddie Jones has said he's never come back to coach aus. dont blame him. the way WBs treat their coaches is disgusting. cheika is immune to the player power BS. you just gotta face the facts. u have no one better to coach the WBs Kane - after the way deans got treated i dont think any non aus coach will ever step forward nor do i reckon will ARU let that happen again.

Regardless what we all may think about Cheika’s shortcomings, replacing him is not a simple process, nor is it financially attractive for the ARU. Who during some sort of intellectual malaise extended his contract to 2019? The Wallaby quotidian 2016 season will be conveniently plastered over if performance and ticket sales improve this year. Although the big question remains unanswered, Australia, don’t have an international rugby coach waiting in the wings and Cheika must be cognizant of this. In my opinion, the step up from super rugby to Wallaby coach was a dramatic one. Therefore, without completely understanding the elements that make a successful international team, he continued utilizing his super rugby knowledge and the support player base. Been awarded 2015 coach of the year was mystifying but he has now found his level and this season will define his abilities. The OZ rugby supporter is knowledgeable, strident and a little rambunctious. Bill and friends will need to be more proactive, at all levels to keep the ship off the rocks as another poor Wallaby season will be a call to man the pumps. If we could just achieve limited success against the AB, all will be vindicated.

Depends if you limit it to Australian born coaches or not.

I think you are so far off the mark Mania re: ....2016 is a meaningless year...its a throwaway year where results mean nothing... sorry - YOU ARE WRONG there was so much hype, hope and expectation on the EOYT that the WBs failed to deliver, should've, could've but didn't beat England....Cheika and his meltdowns is at the core of the woes the WBs have....sure new players have been found but that is the norm and in the scheme of things....right? if you are thinking 2017 is a rebuilding season after the WC - ummmm I think you are a year late...and it wont get better....and who might replace him??? try Eddie Jones if the ARU has the money to poach him....doubt it though...

Spiros relentless attacks on Cheika are bizarre aren't they? I've been trying to figure out why too. I can't. It think it's just Spiro. It's a pity as his historical pieces are fantastic. But his relentless 'sky-is-falling' crap is just destructive.

CS - from a NSW perspective, play Tah matches on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. Insane to keep putting them on Saturday night. This season's match against the Crusaders is on a Sunday afternoon - guaranteed to get 15,000 more than if it were on a Saturday night. Tickets will be more sought after than Fiji, Scotland or pretty much any match at Homebush.

wow. how soon u guys forget. cheika took the WBs to the WC finals 2015, after taking over the year before. 2016 is a meaningless year in the scheme of WC's. its a throwaway year where results mean nothing. cheika through necessity discovered an awesome 2nd row pairing and found an 8 with loads of potential. that is a positive for the first rebuilding season after a WC. more importantly you gotta ask. if cheika isnt the man for the job then who is? silence is deafening

Super Rugby - Super 10's Super 12's use to have appeal to the Australian public.Crowds of 35,000 - 40,000 both at Sydney Football Stadium and Suncorp. It is also run by Foxtel (Murdoch & Telstra) as well as Sanzaar.

100% agree Katipo. The trouble is that Super Rugby is largely run by South Africa and they have no idea. It has no appeal to Australian punters.

I honestly don't see you getting your hands on the trophy before 2020 at the earliest. The All Blacks have the Lions for their June tests to warm up for the Bledisloe whereas you have Fiji, Scotland(without their best players) and Italy. Next year NZ hosts two tests. 2019 there will be one test each, you have to not let NZ win either match to have any chance.
