Lions hammer Giants in AFL Women's

By News / Wire

Brisbane Lions conceded just nine points and thrashed GWS Giants by 34 to continue their perfect start to the AFLW season.

Kate McCarthy and Kaitlyn Ashmore kicked two goals each at South Pine Sports Complex and Jordan Membrey and Sabrina Frederick-Traub also kicked majors for the Lions, in their 6.7 (43) to 1.3 (9) victory on Saturday.

It was the Lions’ fourth victory and puts them top of the table ahead of Adelaide’s game in Fremantle on Sunday. The Giants have one draw and three losses from their four games.

The first goal came in the second quarter, with the Giants already 6-1 down, when Membrey snapped home from close range helping the Lions to a 12-point lead at the long break.

The Lions kicked three more in the third quarter to put the game beyond doubt. First, Frederick-Traub, the best-on-ground with 13 disposals and six marks, grabbed a loose ball after a ruck contest and booted home her fourth goal in as many games.

Then Brittany Gibson stormed down the right wing before booting a kick deep into the forward 50 where Jess Wuetschner handballed to McCarthy inside the goal square to kick home.

The goal of the game followed from Ashmore, as she chased her own kick to soccer home from a near-impossible angle in the right pocket. She scored another in the fourth quarter when Gibson found her behind the defence with a huge huge kick and the Lions’ No.10 booted home from close range.

McCarthy snapped home from from close-range for her fifth of the campaign before Kate Stanton kicked the Giants only goal of the contest.

Week one was an aberration and everyone knew that. But as of this weekend, the AFLW is still pulling numbers comparable to the A League. That's not a collapse, that's a decent base on which to build.

The tv ratings have collapsed. Week 1 appears to be an aberration. I would wait till the end of the season before making any chest beating statements about this comp.

And your point is? Fox paid fairly big money for their games, and the AFLW is in the same ball park - no where near NRL or ARL, but respectable. So a bunch of guys claiming that no one is watching the AFLW on the field is kind of belied by (a) the videos and (b) the TV ratings. The AFLW isn't going to sweep all before it, but the numbers are a lot better than the curmudgeons would have it..

A League numbers are terrible.

Odd, then, that the AFLW matches are getting very respectable TV figures. The numbers watching the AFLW on Foxtel are certainly competitive with the A League numbers. And I've seen some reasonable figures for FTA as well. Methinks there's a bit of sour grapes in the mix here.

Yeah and getting more creative all the time, that 4000 went up to 5000 in an article a couple of days ago.

The majority of the crowd was on the camera side, in the shade away from the sun.

You can easily see more than 350 people in the short 40 sec clip included with this article, and that only shows a small part of the ground. Keep trying haters, your bleating is music to our ears.

@ Mark. Yep, very creative counting by the AFL. The crowd looked closer to 350 then 3500. The same can be said for the 4000 they got last week.
