Another ten rugby league records that will never be broken

By BigJ / Roar Guru

I have found more rugby league records that have stood for years, decades and some even close to a century.

Here are another ten records that will never be broken.

Undefeated season: St George, 1959
From go to whoah, the Dragons remained undefeated in 1959, as part of their 11-straight premiership victories.

Most losses in a season: Newcastle Knights, 25, 2016 season
From one extreme to the next, the Newcastle Knights in 2016 lost 25 games, and by season’s end looked like they could not win a rigged chook raffle. They did manage to win last weekend, breaking the streak.

Most points conceded in season: 944, Western Suburbs, 1999 Season
This was a shocking season for the once proud Magpies and as a result it would be their last in the NRL. Following this the team merged with the Balmain Tigers to become the Wests Tigers.

Most points in a season by a player: Hazem El Masri, 342 in 2004
Hazem El Masri showed what calibre of player he was by smashing his own record from the previous year by 50 points, helping the Bulldogs to win the premiership.

Most points in a season by a team: Parramatta, 2001, 801 points
2001 was the Eels’ best season since their glory days of the 1980s and the first time they made the grand final since 1986. Although it was not enough to take home the title, the record still stands.

Most tries in a game: Frank Burge, 8
Playing for Glebe in 1920, Burge went on an eight-try spree, in a record that has stood for almost a century.

Most points in a game: Dave Brown, 45
On May 18, 1935, Roosters player Dave Brown took control of the game and smashed out 45 points by himself, a fantastic effort.

He also has the second-highest points in a game, 38, for a game in the same season, which leads me to my next record.

Most tries in a season: Dave Brown, 38
In 1935, Brown had a cracker of a year, with 38 tries in total.

Most career tries: Ken Irvine, 212
Irvine was a try-scoring machine for North Sydney, with 171 tries in his 176 games for the club – almost one per game.

He then went to play for Manly in another 60 games and scored 41 more. He also scored 63 rep tries for NSW and Australia.

The next closest to this record is Billy Slater, with 173, but with his looming retirement, I doubt he’ll get there – although I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Most premierships won with the most clubs: Glen Lazarus
I love this record.

Lazarus is the most successful man to ever play rugby league, winning five premierships with three clubs – two with the Raiders (1989, ’90) two with the Broncos (1992, ’93) and finishing his career with one at the Melbourne Storm (1999).

To top things off, he is part of three of the best grand finals of all time, ’89, ’92 and ’99.

The 2016 Knights lost 22 games, not 25. In 24 games, they won 1 ( round 6 v Wests Tigers), drew 1 (round 3 v Canberra Raiders) and lost the rest

Here's a remarkable fact about the 1925 season: the Rabbitohs were so far in front of everyone else that the season was called off early and Souths were awarded the premiership by first past the post (as it was in those days).

trust me its not the grand finals you dont get to play in are not the probem, its the ones you play in but lose that will haunt you forvever, my 1999 grand final stills haunts me to this day. How many players out have said they would trade in everything they did in thier career for a premiership? heaps. I would trade in my Capras jersey if it meant i won that 1999 grand final.

Well, I'm not sure actually competing in all those Finals is a downhill since some players never even get to compete in a finals series let alone a Grand Final or even to represent their country (and captain it). But, yeah... I take your point. Ouch.

He won a Grand Final with St Helens in 2006. St Helens then competed in each Grand Final until 2011, all of which the club lost. The following year he played with Canterbury in the 2012 Grand Final and lost that one. Ouch.

University, bah! Coming dead last more often than not, their only ever appearance in the finals series and they had to go and beat Glebe in the semi-final. Glebe, the great chokers.

You can add James Grahams unique stat - Lost 6 straight Grand Finals. Lost 5 consecutive Super League Grand Finals, followed by an NRL Grand Final. Followed up with another NRL Grand Final loss two years later

Glebe are back in the Ron Massey Cup. They competed in their first match since 1926 as part of a joint-venture with the Concord-Burwood Wolves and lost to the Auburn Warriors.. So it is still possible for them to get a wooden spoon. Ouch.

I think you're on the money their Dogs Of War. When Irvine was playing there was no professional rugby to lure players away. Also more score 'blow-outs' in those days (rarely do teams score more than 40 points in a game). Not impossible, but highly unlikely.

What makes Irvine's record all the more remarkable is that his first nine seasons were in a ten team competition.

Slater is the only won close with 173 so that forty more tries at club level so that is more than one per game for this year alone, cant really see that happening.

Walters actually won 5 with the broncos 92,93,97,98 and captained 00, so that would be six grand finals with two clubs. still a great effort.

Manly's a great historic rugby league club? They're post WW2, just new boys. The Dragons last spoon was a decade before Manly even existed!

I can't see it being broken. That is an insane record. You would need to play like 300 games on the wing to beat it. Hard for a winger to last that long in the game.

If only Kevin Walters had played and won a premiership with a 3rd Club than he would have that record to himself. He finished off with a total of 5 premierships. 1 with the Raiders and 4 with the Broncos.
