Chadd Sayers named Sheffield Shield player of the year

By News / Wire

After narrowly missing out on Test selection, Chadd Sayers has been named Sheffield Shield Player of the Year for snaring 54 scalps in the country’s premier domestic competition.

The South Australian paceman finished with an average of 19.20 in the regular season, which included four five-wicket hauls.

He also took eight wickets in the Shield final against Victoria to finish with 62 wickets for the season.

Cricket Australia Team Performance Manager Pat Howard said Chadd has had a remarkable season.

“His performance with the ball has been phenomenal. He is an extremely deserving recipient of the 2016-17 Sheffield Shield Player of the Year award, and perhaps unlucky not to have played Test cricket given the time he has spent with the Test squad.”

“We congratulate Chadd on his achievements, and all of our State Cricket Award winners.”

The 29-year-old Sayers edged out Western Australia all-rounder Hilton Cartwright, NSW batsman Ed Cowan and Victorian bowler Chris Tremain by two votes for the award.

Votes were awarded by standing umpires on a 3-2-1 basis.

Congrats to chadd. But unfortunately will not play in his ashes if hazlewood, starc, cumins and patto all are fit. plus 1st backup choices are bird, behrendorff. add to them tremain and mennie there is long list for this ashes. chadd best chance of baggy green is in 2019 ashes as he best suited for english conditions. He should try for a county to get used to the conditions their. hazlewood should also opt for county next as he was not able to adjust to the conditions during the 2015 ashes. On the other note for the limited over leg in India this october give behrendorff, paris(if fit), NCN(if fit) a chance as hazlewood and cummins will gain nothing when ashes is around the corner. also next WC is in england only so there is no point on playing this meaning less series. Squad for that ODI series in India: Warner, head, smith, handscomb, henriques, max, wade, stoinis, zampa,NCN,Behrendorff rest:paris, stanlake, agar, ferguson(played here in 2009 series deserves a chance) During 2009 odi series also attack was inexperienced (hilfenaus and dougie were inexperienced then and mackay debut in that series) but still aussie won.

Going by Tassie getting all the spirit of cricket awards it seems that the spirit of cricket has something to do with losing a lot.

For whatever it's worth (probably nothing) I believe Pattinson is the best of all of them in red ball cricket.

It's going to be tough to get our fast bowling attack down to 3 or even 4 this summer. Pattinson's new found form with the bat also makes it interesting

Meanwhile, in county cricket, Pattinson has dominated on debut for Notts, taking 5-76 and hitting 89no.

True. He also gets too many wickets bowled, LBW, and caught behind ie not enough gimme catches by batsmen to fielders. Relying on his skill and accuracy too much.

Eh, most of those wickets were probably just top or middle order batsmen. It's the big quick guys that knock over tailenders

How can he take 62 wickets if he doesn't bowl over 140 kph? This is an outrage! Hasn't he read the CA memo?
