Is Will Millar the answer for Australian rugby's woes?

By Bill Chapman / Roar Rookie

Following another catastrophic weekend for Australian rugby, there was one lone shining light which I believe provides a powerful insight to the problems of Australian rugby.

Will Millar is, or was until last weekend, an amateur rugby player. He has a day job. He therefore probably doesn’t spend much time on Playstation, that is because he doesn’t have much spare time.

He was the captain of Norths when they won the Shute Shield in 2106 in the most entertaining and exciting game of rugby I have witnessed in many years.

He was called up to play for the Rebels and promptly flew to Durban. He would have received a match payment and is therefore not contracted as such – given the Rebels may cease to exist any day.

He probably had little or no time to learn the 300 pages or so of the Rebels play book before running out against the Sharks, so guess what, he played his natural game.

In doing so he was probably man of the match and certainly the Rebels’ best.

He secured two absolutely critical turn overs which may well have saved the Rebels from being beaten. He played the entire 80 minutes – not bad for a bloke training two or maybe three times a week after work.

So here we have a bloke playing for the love of the game, playing with passion and commitment. Playing not for financial reward but because he wants to be out on the paddock having a crack.

He’s living and playing any bloke’s dream. Knowing that, based on his performance in Durban, he will probably see the season out with the Rebels – if his employer is OK with that and knowing that next season he will probably be back running around North Sydney Oval, captaining the Shoremen.

Will Millar is what is good about Australian rugby. Maybe there is a message here?

Don't you think that DOUBLES & MARTO are the same? And is MARTO the Wallaby Full Back who dropped a pass from Campese (a sitter) and lost the series to the Lions.

Sad that like those running the NSW/Qld rugby (even if they call it Australian Rugby), you seem to miss the whole point of marshaling the best of the whole country to try and get Australian rugby back to where it was before it went so professional. Fortunately for those who follow AFL, the Melbourne heads which ran the VFL figured exactly the opposite and now run what is clearly the strongest 'footie' business in the WHOLE of Australia. 'Rebellion' is a joke name for one who supports and expouses the inward looking, negative attitude of the NSW and Qld rugby 'organisations' which seem hell bent on preserving their relatively tiny empires at the cost of a truly Australian one.

I am a Hooper fan but I am seeing signs of fatigue on the young cap for having to carry his Tahs team mates in most games this year.

I read somewhere that Quade is about 1-2 cards off being the most yellow carded player ever, and that Hooper was either on the same number as Quade or only about 1-2 back..

Foley plays really flat against poor teams and often in Super Rugby. Against strong rush defences he panics and plays really deeply (a little like Cooper really). I've always felt like Foley should be a better 12 than 10, as his main thing is running good lines and offering support when a line-break is made. He just doesn't have the creativity or the kicking game for me. If Cheika insists on playing Beale at 12 I would actually want Lance at 10, he's at least defensively solid. We can't go up against international attacks with a 10-12 of Foley/Cooper and Beale. It would be like that 2008 match in South Africa when Timana Tahu let in about 25 points by himself.

There isn't another 9 rounds before the June series, and that's ignoring that Miller might not even get to 10 games this year. He's on a short term 'injury cover' contract and he's been pushed out to the bench this week now that Colby is back and McMahon and Reid can't be far off. Hard to get a gig as a smaller stature loose forward in Melbourne.

I'm from Melbourne, mate. No sky blue, rose, or any other tint of lenses going on here. This is how I see it: Foley: plays extremely flat, attacks the line. Great running game. Kicking game isn't the best, in play or off the tee, but he has been known to slot one or two important penalties in his time. I think he's a pretty decent support runner during open/unstructured play. Concussion issues a worry. Cooper: great passing game, decent in play kicking game, off the tee ok but nothing to write home about. Most creative 10 we have, hands down. Has a history of being carded (did he break the international yellows record last year? Is he back from suspension yet?). Plays deep. I don't think that was as much of an issue in the past but since his knee he feels like hes lost a good yard of pace and doesnt seem to attack the line nearly as often which reduces the effectiveness of his great passing/kicking/play making game. Lance: does all the basics well. Can kick, can distribute, can tackle. Not sure if he can open a game up the way Cooper or Foley can (or could, cards and concussions pending). Maybe if you flank him with guys like Beale, Kerevi, Folau, Hunt, Naivalu, Speight, etc then he doesn't need to do the crazy passes or 10 channel linebreaks that the others can do.

Of course you`d pick Hooper and Foley over anyone else, you`re blinded by the Sydney centric rugby media hype about him and Foley...You wonder why the Wallabies and super rugby is dying... With baby blue tinted spectacle wearing blokes like you who are part of a massive problem.. Lastly " Lance is probably the ‘safer’ option " hahaha I thought Foley was the ‘safer’ option .. What does ‘safer’ mean to you ?? Does it mean we will still lose, without a shot being fired ? ..I`d rather a 10 have a go than this " safer " but still lose cr@p....QC at 10 Michael Chieka ya goose !!

Robertson had played 10 games for the Tahs all up and was pickled for his Wallaby debut mate in 2016. So going by that theory, Millar should be a chance for the June series...

Riddler The guy you are thinking of was Steve Merrick from Singleton. He worked in the mines in the Hunter. Abrassive, physical half who decided to stick to his day job!

The heartland doesn;t care about Rugby outiside of their own clubs . In fact they see Rugby in WA and Vic as unheathly competition for limted resources. Anything that makes them stronger at the expense of the game at large is fine by them. It is the way they like it.

You're right. Will Miller won't get a look in for the Wallabies. And for good reason; he's played one SR game. Maybe next year if he can force his way into a team, be it the rebels or somewhere else, and string some good games together. I'm stoked he got a run and played well, even more so because it was for the Rebels, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's be honest, everything you said about Foley can be applied to every Australian 10 to some degree. Some just get more cards than others. Lance is probably the 'safer' option, although his ceiling isn't as high. I'd pick Hooper at 7 right now. I'd pick him every day of the week over Colby, Alcock, and everyone else playing openside in Australia. Pockcock and Gill are gone. Smith and Hodgson are too old to invest time in, and Smith has been pretty up and down this year for mine. McMahon is injured. Alcock and Fainga'a have done themselves no disservice whatsoever but I'm still gonna take Hoops over them right now. I don't care if the 7 is a designated jackal, I want a pack where multiple players are capable at it. When we only have one specialist the good teams can just take them out of the match, like the ABs often do with Poey. If we've got a spread of capable yet not elite players then that's ok. Latu, Fardy and Timani are all pretty handy at it, as is Hooper for the stuff out wide because he gets there so bloody quickly. Other top tier teams don't run and out-and-out fetcher. i don't see the issue. Things don't always have to remain like they were in the 'good old days', sometimes they change and evolve, sometimes others are left to go the way of Taxis, magazines/newpapers, and chimney sweeps.

Forget it Bill , Hooper is locked in for the 7 role until 2019 and he will also be anointed captain as well . Cheika only goes to Waratah training so he wouldn't even know who Will Millar is.. MC never goes any further than Moore park .so him and other player in the other 4 franchises have zero chance...It will go down as our worst Wallabies ever with the worst coach, worst 7 and worst captain ever. Actually ,it is the worst now.... 9 losses in one season, 2016 ..Horrendous .. Bernard Foley .The one dimensional, error prone, non passing, non kicking ,non backline organizing flyhalf is also locked in.. Add his other favourites, Mumm Folau Phipps Horne Beale Skelton Robertson Kepu and TPN and you have most of the starting Wallabies..

If you seriously think that cutting either the Force and the Rebels will provide additional resources to support the heartland you are kidding yourself. Rebels owner already has asked for his cut of the additional funds on offer after a team is cut. Less subscribers a consequence of cutting a team, will ultimately lead the broadcasters to give ARU a smaller % of any new broadcast deal post 2020. NZRU have already intimated that they are going to ask for a greater % of any new broadcast deal post 2020. ARU have sold out the sport in this country due to total mismanagement over the last 6 years, possibly longer. If they continue down this path the Wallabies will slowly slip further down the world rugby rankings. I can see the ARU going broke within 10 years. When all this occurs see how much grassroots funding is then handed out.
