TELL US: Can New South Wales win the series with Pearce in the halves?

By Riordan Lee / Editor

It’s the same nagging migraine that the New South Wales selectors suffer this time every year.

We’re five days out from the team announcement and arguably the most crucial position in the Blues squad is still up for grabs.

It would seem that James Maloney has all but locked up his starting spot after an impressive season but who lines up next to him?

The natural starting point for this question begins with the Roosters halfback – having played 15 Origin games over the last nine years he has the experience.

But with just four wins to his name, it’s fair enough to question how much that experience is worth.

They’ve never done it with him, but they’ve done it without him – so we want to you to tell us:

Can New South Wales win the series with Mitchell Pearce in the halves?

Matt Cleary’s going to be joining the panel on Roar LIVE tonight to tackle this very question, so make sure you submit your opinions in the comment section below and we’ll try to get to as many of your responses as we can.

We’ll also be covering off on other selection dilemmas and the NRL’s recent drug scandals.

Roar Live will be streamed this afternoon at around 5:45pm on The Roar’s Facebook page. It will also be available as a podcast on Soundcloud and iTunes.

Game 3, 2013. The wheels completely fell off that game.

Pearce is the opposite of Nate myles and is comparable to graham hick in English cricket. Myles is continually ordinary at nrl but continues to be picked for qld and performs well. Hick dominated at first class level but never stepped it up at test level. Without off field issues Pearce would have probably played over twenties games by now. So for me the real question is how do the so called expects believe he's the man to run the side. Are they missing everything we see or does Wayne have some interesting photos.

I'm a chooks supporter and I agree with you. Pearce reminds me of Rooney in the sense of being a great club player but unable to make an impact in the national team despite the numerous chances he has been afforded.

NSW can win Origin with Pearce. He has struggled to perform when he was younger, and it wasn't without a lack of trying. Pearce has natural talent and always had the edge to play Origin but he lacked maturity in his game. After his incident last year, we have seen a new Mitchell Pearce come 2017. He has learnt life lessons off the field, which he has brought onto the field and if NSW give him this one last chance to prove himself, he'll be ready. Pearce needs Maloney alongside him and they can guide NSW to a series win.

My question: Why not Townsend? Great pairing with him and Maloney.

NSW should just stick with what worked and see how it goes. Moylan played and defended well in SOO3 last year.

Ash Taylor is probably going to leapfrog the lot of them when Cronk retires. Taylor and Norman or Morgan is looking like a great option for the next 5 years. Will be interesting to see how Milford goes next season and where he plays but for mine, his kicking game isn't good enough for origin.

And rename the western Highway, the Mitchell Pearce way, just kidding. I know I will probably cop it for this suggestion, but why haven't we ever considered Hodgsen & Josh Renolds again? We talk a lot about players having loosing mentalities and poor records at origin level, this pair started in one series and won it. I know everyone will say ah yes but Cronk wasn't in the team they beat, my answer to that would be Thurston and Smith were as well as all the other legends but win they did. I think its time to take some risks with other younger players, we cant keep going as they are, I also think Daley has had sufficient opportunity with a team full of good players to do better than they have.

G'day Will I know you are a Tigers fan but I just want to see Pearce in SOO without Farah and Gallen trying to run play. A guy like Wallace would suit him perfectly. If he fails against what is looking like the weakest QLD side in many years then scratch him forever. There is just no one else really standing out as a better option.

Add to that as Corey Norman and Anthony Milford would be picked well before him. Halves these days are all 6/7 capable in my book. Some are more organisers than others but all can play the roles.

The problem is Pearce isn't a pathetic half at Club Level. In fact in NRL he's one of the most consisten halves around. The problem is every QLD player has his measure and every origin he doesn't step up to take the game by the scruff. Maloney is a quality half in attack and played well last year. Adam Reynolds is a better option, especially in his kicking game than Pearce. I say ARey to stay Maloney's partner.

Considering Maloney has won 2 x Prems with pathetic halves partners and played just 6 Origins compared to 15 hes not that bad

There really isn't much choice. If Pearce was a QLDer, he would be behind Cronk, Thurston, Cherry, Hunt and probably two or three others.

I really hate to face it, but, I think Pearce has to be one of the only two possibilities. Forgetting form, experience and the "pick and stick" theory, the only thing we have left is combinations. So, if Daley/Sterling go with the "generally accepted" team of Tedesco, Ferguson, Dugan, Hayne, Morris, Maloney, ... , Woods, Farah, Fafita, Cordner, Frizell, Jackson. And with Bird, Woods, Klemmer, Graham etc. in the mix, the two best candidates are: Chad Townsend or Mitchell Pearce. Personally, I don't like the look of either of them, but, Pearce combines with Cordner well and would also have Ferguson out on the wing for his inevitable bomb into the corner that he will try time and time again. While Townsend has combinations with Maloney, Graham & Bird. And he's a premiership winning halfback. I think it should be Townsend. But, I suspect he won't be picked. Neither should Farah or Woods, but, whatever...

Qld would love to run out onto Lang park for Game 1 and see Pearce waiting for them. Especially old man Thurston.

His dad would be better at halfback for this series.

He has earned one more chance, if another series loss occurs then Pearce and Maloney must go.
