Sugar Ray calls Mayweather vs McGregor 'boxing's biggest mismatch'

By BigJ / Roar Guru

Legendary boxer Sugar Ray Leonard has stated that Mayweather would easily beat Connor McGregor in a boxing match and the fight is the biggest mismatch in boxing history.

Leonard compared the possible fight to the Muhammad Ali vs Antonio Inoki fight that happened back in 1976 before his third fight with Ken Norton.

A similar situation happened forty years ago. Japanese pro wrestling champ Inoki challenged Ali to a fight in Japan as boxer versus wrestler. The fight was labelled as a bit of fun and easy money for Ali, but when arriving in Japan the Ali camped realised this was no joke.

After fifteen rounds of an embarrassing mismatch the match was called a draw and Ali is bleeding from the legs due to all the kicks that Inoki gave him. Ali got an infection due to this and almost had an amputation.

Luckily he was fine and could continue with his career. While there are no fears of this happening again if this fight should occur as it is a pure boxing match, it will still be called a mismatch in Mayweather’s favour.

While Leonard has declared the fight would be an financial success due to casual fights fans being my than willing to support the fight, but the boxing purists would not care for it. Leonard went on the state that Mayweather would easily beat Connor by a long shot.

Oscar De La Hoya has labelled the fight a ‘farce that may cause irreparable damage to the boxing world’.

He is concerned that any Mayweather versus McGregor fight later in the year might overshadow the huge GGG versus Canelo fight happening in September this year.

De La Hoya added to his letter to the fans on Facebook. “My interest is in the health of boxing as a whole. Our sport might not ever recover”.

Clearly not everyone is interested in the fight.

Have these newly appointed policeman seen who Quade Cooper has fought. If they want to clean up boxing they should have started a long time ago from the bottom up. ALi would have had cleaned up that Japanese bloke very quickly if it was the UFC rules, bloke went to ground while kicking out and then lay on the ground the whole match and used Ali's adherence to boxing rules of not punching anyone on the ground to avoid getting hit.

Hard to argue with the man I regard as the greatest modern day boxer. This is purely a money maker, where the Irishman could get seriously hurt.

As a fight fan BigJ, totally agree. From a numbers perspective, it is what it is I suppose... Hopefully it gets locked in soon and gets it out of the road, cashing in on a huge pay day before getting back in the octagon.... OR this chat gets put to bed once and for all and as you say, he can get back to focusing on the possible match-ups awaiting him in the UFC

I'd be interested to see the fight but have absolutely no need to see it. Even as an MMA fan I'm under no illusions, if Mayweather is anything like the fighter he was in 2015, Connor won't get close to him. The only reason he would is if age has caught up to Floyd. I'd much rather see Connor back in the Octagon in some of the big fights that await him there. In Lightweight there's the eventual winner of Khabib/Ferguson. If he drops back to Featherweight (which probably isn't his natural fighting weight but where he is more dominant), there are some massive fights there for him. Aldo 2 would be huge, especially if he defeats Holloway next week. And if some of the big name Bantamweights like Garbrant and Cruz come up as they've spoken about in the past, they would present big money fights also.
