Courageous Canberra conquer Roosters

By Samuel Ashton / Roar Guru

The Raiders won 24-16 after an enthralling contest at GIO Stadium on Sunday.

The first half started perfectly for the Roosters, though they had a try disallowed. They scored soon after and went 6-0 up early in the game.

After that the half belonged to Canberra, scoring multiple tries through some typically flashy Canberra play to lead 16-6 at the break.

The second half was better from the Roosters as they fought back to 18-16 to make it interesting.

Unfortunately for them they couldn’t crack Canberra again as the Raiders scored at the death to win 24-16.

The first half was all Canberra, after the Roosters went ahead through Jake Friend after some terrible Raiders defence.

The Canberra outfit responded quickly however through two terrific tries from Jordan Rapana helping the Raiders to go in front.

Jarod Croker then scored a cracker helping the Raiders lead 16-6 at half-time.

The second half was better for the Roosters, scoring a screamer in the corner through Manu bring it back to 16-12.

Croker made it 18-12 shortly after through a penalty but the Roosters came back to make it 18-16 after Mitchell scored a length of the field try from the scrum.

The Roosters kept knocking on the door to no avail with Sezer scoring on the buzzer to seal it for Canberra.

Need to take your lime green glasses off - Canberra got the rub of the green with particular 50-50 calls during the game. Don't believe the Roosters were slowing the ruck down anymore than Canberra were - If this was so the Refs wouldn't have penalised the Roosters for sure as they are the most or one of the most penalised sides.

Stu, the Raiders dominated this game! The Roosters were continually allowed to 'slow the ruck' and were only kept in this game by their spasmodic attack in the second half, as in first half they were completely outplayed. The Roosters continually threw silly passes that cost them the game and the final try. Sure, the Raiders need to improve and this wasn't a convincing win like the Warriors was, but, you should consider the Warriors lucky that they don't play the Broncos again in the 2017 draw! This was a fluke win by the Warriors, don't get too excited by their win! lol

Don't misconstrue me here..I think the Raiders have just about the best roster in the Nrl,frustratingly it is far off being commensurate with performance..halves are being blotted out by Hodgson..it's Farah Mach 2..God love him but is cruelling the side by taking on too much..Tapine would be excellent if he just played football...Mick Gordon showed the difference a good attacking (and well positioned in defence) fullback makes to a side,Wighton is just not there...where's the coaching development in these players...Bj's gone backwards,Shannon Boyd's gone from Australian rep.to right off the map in the prop pecking order...and all Ricky's got is 'the other sides have worked us out '....don't let 6 and 6 blindside false comfort into you...the Roosters made quite a few monumental errors yesterday..and were merely a 'tuba in the string section'..funny line Gus...away from what would have been an humiliation far worse than the Knights spanking..

Agreed Albo, Also impressed with Joseph Manu who took some hard knocks and got better. This 20 y o is one to watch. JW-H appeared to be playing concussed.

I'm not saying the Raiders are going well but they have a 6 and 6 record for the year. At the same stage last year, they only had 6 wins and a draw and still went onto make the preliminary final. There's a long way to go yet.

Superb efforts by Jake Friend & Michael Gordon kept the under-manned Chooks in the game. Raiders still struggling to put it all together and need their halves to demand control of proceedings. Too much dummy half running leaves no scope for anything but a kick on the 5th. Luckily Sezer got a couple of useful kicks to payoff yesterday.

Steveng, yet you jump on to the warriors blog and say how crap they are despite beating a depleted Broncos team convincingly, something the Raiders couldn't do to the Roosters.

They were unconvincing in their win but put the red line through them? the season is not even at the half way mark and they are still within reach of the top 4. I still think the Sharks, Roosters, Storm,Broncos and cowboys are probably better teams than the Raiders this year. The rest definitely aren't. The Raiders have a lot of points in them though and anything could happen come finals time.

No it doesn't!!! The Raiders were a better side all game, the Chooks seemed to be allowed to slow the play the ball and the ruck all game, especially Jake Friend, no wonder Ricky Stuart was having a go at the referees (in the post game press conference) for that! But one thing I must commend the Raiders for and that is, their support for 'Autistic Wellbeing' which is a condition that is affecting our young kids more and more and year by year (my little 4yr old son is one of them) and the Raiders support and Ricky Stuart's foundation support should be commended and championed for doing such a great job!!! Well done all!!!

Gus even called a 'knock-on' when Nick Cotric spectacularly palmed that ball back (which was a near 20-40) to Jack Wighton, lol, yeah some of the knock-on rulings baffle me and it really is detrimental to the game.

Yet the fact you were still in the game till the 80 th minute paints a horrible picture of where the Raiders are right now..uninspired coaching, dumb acts..can just about put the thick red line thru them for this year..

I think Gus was suggesting that anything that goes to ground is instantly called a knock on , regardless of whether it went a metre backwards. And yes I will agree , Painful to watch last night.

Some really undisciplined play from the Chooks today. Unnecessary pass metres from the opposition in-goal on the second, a no look pass getting scooped up by the Raiders and a knock on in the last few minutes when it seemed we regained momentum was not fun viewing for me. I'm probably biased but I think if both teams were at full strength the Roosters would've jagged the win there, but it is what it is. Not trying to be mean but it seems Gus is starting to lose it. "I haven't seen a knock-back in years!" he says, which to me is nothing but dumbfounding.
