Woeful West Coast are pretenders and nothing else

By gameofmarks / Roar Guru

I am tired of listening to the rhetoric offered up by the likes of Matt Priddis, Shannon Hurn, and to a lesser extent Adam Simpson, about the form of the West Coast Eagles.

I said to a lesser extent Simpson because on Saturday I saw a person in his press conference after the game who looks sick and tired of offering up the same old excuses that have seemingly become the mantra of the Eagles.

I think Simpson is coming to the realisation that this side is not going to win him a premiership before his tenure is up at the end of the 2019 season.

A person who looks like he is tired of the effort, or lack thereof, the playing group is delivering week in week out.

A person who I think is willing, if not ready to make some sweeping changes to the playing group. Changes that need to be made now so that Simpson has enough time to blood and mould the young recruits playing at East Perth into a premiership side, and move along or trade those players in the playing group who continually disappoint him with their lack of effort and performance.

Players such as Josh Hill, Mark Le Cras and Jack Darling, to name a few! Do we really need to put up with the likes of these three wondering if they will bring their A, or even B-game on game day, let alone take them into a final series and hopefully a grand final with the same doubts?

Your chances in a coin toss are better than just one of these three performing on game day, let alone all three that would be required to perform on the big day to win a flag. \

[latest_videos_strip category=”afl” name=”AFL”]

Priddis has come out with classic party-line rhetoric. ‘At our best we can beat any side in the competition’, you know, that sort of thing.

Sorry Pridda but your best football this year has been wins against Port Adelaide and the Bulldogs where Port lost the game in the third quarter missing six gettable goals, and just getting over the line against the Bulldogs kicking a woeful single goal in the second half.

You were lucky to beat St Kilda, who blew it by kicking 19 points, and lucky meeting North Melbourne in the first round, who would flog you now with the footy they are currently playing.

The same sort of stuff is heard from captain Hurn, who can struggle to string a coherent sentenc together in an interview. ‘It’s all about doing the basics well and being consistent’.

Ripping insight, Shannon – the Eagles are consistently bad with the way you guys go about the basics of footy, so I guess that’s something.

If the rest of the Eagles playing group believe the rhetoric Pridda and Hurn offer up on a weekly basis to the media, then they are all living a Walter Mitty type existence as AFL football players. That is, they are pretenders!

The Eagles have seven home games (Geelong, Melbourne, Port ADelaide, Fremantle, Brisbane, Carlton) at Domain and four away games (Bulldogs, Colllingwood, St Kilda, GWS) remaining in the season. I can see them winning only three home games and maybe one away game.

For a side that many expected to challenge for a flag this year, despite missing Nic Nat for most of the season, that will give them with ten wins and twelve losses for the season and leave them outside the eight.

Look out for the blood in the streets of Perth!

some level headed comments there. dont want to ditch the baby with the bathwater. there are extremes with this team, hot+cold, not consistent, but they look great when they're on a winning run. is it just fine tuning (again) needed, is it coaching, or team leaders? i think the back line is fine, also has depth. the ruck is a transitional patched together unit awaiting Lycett+Nicnats return. the forward line can be addressed with perhaps Rioli crumbing and Gov to take the pressure off Darlings size problems. after a resting ruckman, theres Lecras, Hill and Cripps to include or drop. i think Gov should be permanently based forward and swung to backline for emergencies, not the other way around. Barrass has been improving his style of play and should fill Govs shoes soon. The main issue for me, coaching and leadership aside, is the midfield. i know the argument for and against Priddis, but i'm just never convinced about him, or his helicopter kicks(he does actually have a leg problem that affects his kicking). my argument is if you replaced him with another good extractor/midfielder who could run, break lines and spear kick targets, what a difference that would make. he's a clogger because we havent got anyone better, except now we have Mitchell, who is great (for one season?)but we dont need Priddis+Mitchell together-Mitchell is the Priddis we need!?, So replace Priddis with another Shuey type. Perhaps Yeo or Venables(reportedly moves like Judd). We've had 12 yrs to build a good midfield, at least 8yrs after Kerr left. (Cox, Judd, Cuzz, Kerr, Fletcher, Braun, Stenglein- now that was a midfield). We have NN, Lycett, Shuey, Gaff, Sheed..a gap...then Redden-the jury is out, Jetta is up+down, Duggan is still learning.

Wow? he's obviously superior to the whole city of Perth or 'Perthies'. you wonder what personality disorder makes you place a whole metropolis beneath youself? such sweeping generalisations, and Corby is from QLD last i heard. Lets move along, nothing to see here.

He seems to be going along well enough. Often the issue with the ex-basketballers is that they're not tough enough or shirk the contact - see Craig Moller over at the Dockers for a prime example of someone who didn't make the grade. Smith doesn't seem to mind throwing himself around, enjoys the contact and adds a fair bit of impetus to our midfield mix. I think he's definitely worth persisting with and Matt Eagles shouldn't hold out much hope of a fairytale while Smith remains at the Lions

They did but I think they could have picked Venables up with their second pick.

Daniel Venables was the one you guys went for over Powell-Pepper. What's he up to? Agreed on Willie Rioli, while I don't think you necessarily have to be an absolute Adonis to play this game he is well off what is required. Lot of work to do there. At this rate he's well on track to imitate the career of Ashley Sampi.

Agree with your comments but I would look at the list management before the issue of struggling to attract players. How many WA kids have they let slip through their fingers. Last year Sam Powell-Pepper was playing for East Perth and look at him now. Their recruiting is pathetic and Lamb is a case in point. Watched the EP v WP game yesterday and didn't see much that I liked from the recruits on the list. Partington was good but the rest were pretty average. McInnes looks like he has really matured and I think he is worth persisting with in the ones. Rioli is too fat and looks like he will have continual hamstring troubles.

I think the biggest problem West Coast have is Simpson. He doesn’t seem to have the mongrel for the job and has the perception of being way too tolerant of poor efforts and mediocrity. The Weagles have similar issues to the Lions in that they struggle to attract people to come to the club short of the hometown lure, but as we have found such players are usually going for the lifestyle and it invariably detracts from their professionalism. This is just outward appearances but it does seem as though Simpson just keeps talking about process and tolerating poor efforts and rarely applies the blowtorch to these players. While morale might be good and the club might feel good I doubt their supporters are going to keep tolerating everyone singing Kumbayah in the absence of a finals win. They need a healthy injection of the good old fashioned Perth mongrel and the perth catchphrase – “if you don’t like it, F@ck off” The lack of serious competition for spots too means that a player can underperform by their own standards for years and yet still hold down a spot in the starting 22 or on the list. Witness a spud like Tom Lamb as a prime example – drafted at 32 in 2014, and has played 1 game in 3 years. Long history of footballing success in the family but for whatever reason he has failed to kick along. Loads of Eagles in a similar position. Gee the WA government would be a bit cheesed off if both these sides had a slump around the time the new stadium opened. Maybe the new digs and bigger crowds will give the players the rocket they need to pick their game up. Worked for Port.

West Coast has the same problem as Collingwood - they overrate mediocre players due to their bias. West Coast has two A graders - Kennedy and Hurn. The rest are B grade at best, hence they have no chance of winning a premiership it this list. Even Priddi, who won a brownlow, is B grade; he only won the brownlow because he gets lots of touches, like Swan, but he'll never hurt you because they're all useless 1 metre handballs.

No analysis what so ever, just an article on based of emotions. I get it, I was pissed at the lack of intent on the weekend as well they looked like they just couldn't be bothered and they still only lost by 3 points. Apart from a 10 minute block in the last quarter they didn't show what they have for sure but some supporters need to have a real good look at what we have. Firstly, blooding kids just for the sake of blooding kids doesn't make them better footballers. Darling isn't tall enough to be a first or second option hence why he gets beaten, as a third option he would be monstrous. His defensive work in the forward 50 is ranked elite. Mitch McGovern would make a massive difference here. Once Rioli gets himself right he will take Hill or Lecras spot, having another small dangerous forward, a little bit more of a development in Mutimer, Venebles or Karpany and you replace the other. Let's bear in mind that we are talking about replacing a guy that averages 1.7 goals a game this year, not too bad. We are currently running, depending on your opinion our 3rd, 4th and 5th tier ruckmen, our midfielders are rarely getting first use and when they are they aren't getting anywhere near the quality of use that Nic will provide when he is back. Not even the level that Lycett will provide when he is back. Jettta's last two weeks have been great, most meters gained Round 10 and second most Round 11. Our speed is a fallacy, we are made to look slow because we don't receive first use of the ball with our rucks and we are broken apart due to the fact that when we do push forward it is one of the strongest pushes in the league that when someone gets out the back they are gone. It is also one of the reasons we are able to generate, usually, decent scores of a lack of forward entries. If speed is your great concern then Johannisen is a player that is worth chasing in the off season.

I didnt mention Desert Storm...I guess you just googled "Iraq 1990's'' and thats what came up. I was a subcontractor for UNICEF in 1992, my Facebook profile has a picture of me in the Foyer of the El Rashid Hotel.... Google that jackass. I know its hard for you Perthies to conceive of a planet that doesn't feature Perth , Bali or Schappelle Corby at its centre, but believe it or not, such a world exists.... .. and you know the best part about this big , beautiful world we live in?? Hillbillies like you are not part of it... enjoy the junk food and the Kardashians, woo hoo, you go girl. ;-)

''Booya geez you were obviously in primary school 92-94'' Actually, I'd just come back from Iraq, what where you doing then? As for the rest of it, I cant be bothered going over it anymore. I mean, Sam Mitchel and Lewis Jetta of 2017 would make the Eagles midfield of 92 and 94... like I said, you've got a great standup career ahead of you. Shane Woewoedin won a Brownlow, he wouldnt have gotten a game with the 92-94 Eagles either. Earth out.

Booya geez you were obviously in primary school 92-94 You included 94 in the argument hence me bringing up bond and Mitchell white You also said malthouse wouldn't have priddas due to leg speed hence why I mentioned lambs lack there of Lamb better than a brownlow medallist Jesus AsYeo is playing predominantly hbf this season you need to compare to worsfold or McKenna not a rover as pyke was And where did I bring up matera or Kemp ?? Mate a child like yourself couldn't own ice cream

''You asked for a comparison of the 2017 '' So you believe Mitchel and Jetta would have made the 1992 side based on their performances this year?? Give comedy a shot, being a football analyst clearly isnt your thing. Who would they replace, Matera, Kemp, Mainwaring?? '' Yeo before worsfold and McKenna…geez'' Where did I say that?? You could make case for Yeo ahead of Don Pyke. I know reading isnt your thing, but please do yourself a favour and re read my original post. ''Harding was only 193cm wouldn’t make it in modern ruck'' ... The whole point of this question (and I know you are struggling to understand this) is how many of todays players would have made it back in 1992 not the other way around. ''Shane Bond played how many games for wce??'' I dont know, why dont you google it for me??. I haven't mentioned Shane Bond at any point in this discussion. ''Lamb blessed for leg speed roflmao and really pridda was a elevated rookie in ,06 and I doubt he would of cracked that midfield '' Did I say Lamb was blessed with leg speed?? No, again, thats you saying that. However , Lamb was faster than Priddis, which isn't hard given the latter couldn't outrun a Galapagos tortoise. and finally you are correct, Priddis couldnt crack the 2006 midfield and the same would have been true in 92 and 94 so thanks for confirming that point. he played in the 2006 season so was available for selection, he wasnt .. Can you hear that noise, its the sound of you being owned BOOYA!! Maybe now would be a good time for you to crawl back under your mushroom...;-)

Sadly, after travelling to the Gold Coast for the game from my home in Melbourne (ah the SUN) this is my conclusion as well. Too Slow in the Midfield, too many non-contributors up front. Still a decent back line if they could win or break even more often on the clearances in midfield. 5-10 team depending on home form - likely in the 7 to 10 range.

Priddis for Lamb?? Priddis didnt make the 2006 side, Malthouse wouldnt have had him in his 92 or 94 squads... Priddis's lack of pace means he wouldnt have gotten past first base with Mick. (IMO) Lycett over Harding and Hynes?? Harding's ruck work was first class and he took a good grab around the ground. Hynes, this ones probably 50/50 for me. I'd be happy with either. Mitchel for Turley.. thats not like for like comparison,I like Mitch, but he hasnt even played 15 games for the Eagles. Gaff?? He wouldn't have got a game for the reserves, you had to know how to tackle in those days. Jetta? Again, thats not a like for like comparison, hes barely played a dozen games for the Eagles...and to be fair, its only the last couple of weeks that hes found some form. Kennedy, Yeo and McGovern are the only guys I could make a case for from the current side. Nicnat if fit would be amongst it.
