England edge Pumas in rugby thriller

By News / Wire

Code hopper Denny Solomona made a dramatic entrance into international rugby union, scoring a last-minute try with his first touch of the ball as England snatched a 38-34 victory over Argentina in San Juan.

The former Super League record-breaking winger was introduced for his debut 10 minutes into the second half with England leading 23-17.

It looked like going horribly wrong as he watched in agony as the Pumas immediately ran in two quick-fire tries to lead 31-23.

The brilliance of George Ford helped his side draw level only for replacement fly-half Juan Martin Hernandez to restore Argentina’s lead with a drop goal three minutes from the end.

However, there was time for one last, dramatic twist as Joe Launchbury and Piers Francis combined to get New Zealand-born Solomona into space and he produced a trademark decisive finish.

The 23-year-old Solomona was one of 10 new caps in the side and coach Eddie Jones was delighted with the performance from England.

“I thought it was an incredible game of rugby,” Jones said.

“I thought for our guys to win that was a tremendous effort.

“In the end … to show poise and stick to what we needed to do in the circumstances was an unbelievable effort from the young guys.

“When you are playing a full-strength Argentina team, I think it is one of the best team efforts I have been associated with.”

Only now? The last time the Pumas played well was the QF of the RWC, plus a game to SA. Maybe I am missing one here or there. But let's be clear. The Pumas don't need primarily a sports psychologist. They need proper coaching. That a psychologist can help, I have no doubt. I recall when in 2012 I spoke for a long time with Graham Henry, he told me (and it is in his book) that he personally used the ABs psychologist to help him deal with stress and anxiety. It was not just for the players, it was for the entire staff. But the Pumas reflect the rot from the top. AP9 controlling everything without a position in the UAR, URBA still disengaged with the UAR, the business of rugby for the players, the unusual income distribution for the players. It is a whole mess. AP9 is the Grondona of rugby. In almost all aspects (except size).

According to what you wrote, but it is very important that the UAR understand it and make decisions as soon as possible. Starting at least with something simple, to play concentrated the 80 minutes as we do the ones that we see the game by TV and the public that filled a stadium with desire to see The roar of the Pumas. Greetings and that next Saturday we do not have our heart beating with danger of heart attack.

LP must work their mental aspect, they getting use to lose. A new and fresh start with foreign staff will be useful . Some players are quite past their age and need to step down. The set pieces improved for this game but you never know for how much because the opposition is pretty new and have not been together before. It is not nice to say this when things look very bad, but something must be done because what los Pumas are doing is not working even if they win the next match.

Yes how they let that last try in I'll never know, they had the guy wrapped up down the right wing and he not only bounced them all off, he set of infield again untouched. A wasted opportunity with so many English players out though Gatlands odd selections left them with some good players, Ford, Launchberry etc.

Got to be honest, despite it being entertaining, I thought England were pretty awful at times. The first half was incredibly frustrating with the amount of mistakes and, had they eradicated them, they could have won that by 20 points. The 12-13 axis also didn't work particularly well, even though there were individual moments of brilliance, so if they can get that sorted England should improve. Some excellent individual performances, though, with the back-row dominating the breakdown and Ford probably producing his best display of the season. For next week, I wonder if Jones will make many changes. It's great to see Curry, Isiekwe and Maunder get some game time but I would also like to see what Cokanasiga can do at this level.

"Most of the starters are in NZ" - ha ha very funny. Most of the starters are home-based and many, effectively, in the 3rd team and/or should be helping to win the U20 WC.

I watched the whole game And will say for entertainment it was excellent. The Puma's found a way to loose this one... Poor tackling on Solomonas try and in general a worrying lack of pace in the backs which means cover defence is slow and line breaks in attack rely on perfect handling more so than for other nations. England do unsurprisingly have very good depth.. But this should be expected. They also have a very good coach. Argentina have neither. Foreign coach and pick the best argentine players....from Europe as well as the Jags....and some of these near misses will be wins.... Lastly notice England kept their FH on all game. Ford had a blinder.. Why do Argentina take off Landajo and Creevy in such a important game? Double lastly, Nigel Owens gave England a couple of debatable penalties for offside... It's a shame a ref can give a kickable penalty for a small situation on the half way line...union needs to do more to Base the game around tries as penalty goals being 3pts from half way is too much.... Make a try 6 and this would do alot to encourage better play

Certainly, I think the Pumas need some sort of rethink. For England, though, that was a great result. They're missing 30 players through a combination of the Lions, injuries and other availability reasons. Their openside last night was 18 years old and there were 5 players in the squad who are eligible to be at the current U-20 RWC. Jones is building some serious depth.

Still looked a good English team... I mean in the backs alone they had Brown, Ford, Yarde, Care.... all starters. I know you're a hard marker of your own team Carlos and 2 from 12 isn't good though let's face it they are in a "tough draw" facing 3 of the worlds top 5 teams so regularly.

LOL Solo was missing in defence ; the last two trys by argies directly from his errors and missed tackles. that try was a fluke - how could they let him run that far ? in fact al lthe try s was due to very poor defence. argies seriosly need to rethink their rules - the guys in Europe like Galarza Imoff Bosch , even Lobbe will really add some experience and leadership to the team. Once the hooker and fly half were subbed , they lost all defensive shape.

The Pumas problem was their defence. They looked like gaining control at 60 minutes through their experience.

Pumas lost 10 of the last 12 tests. This one to a team where most of their starters are in NZ. Regression to mediocrity.
