Disgraced AFL senior executives apologise

By Ben McKay / Wire

Disgraced senior AFL executive Simon Lethlean says his “total focus” is on rebuilding the relationship with his family after his departure from the sport’s head office.v

Previously seen as the No. 2 to AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan, Lethlean apologised on Friday for a “inappropriate relationship” with a junior female AFL employee that led to his resignation.

He held the position of AFL’s football operations manager since March.

His indiscretion and departure – along with that of commercial operations general manager Richard Simkiss on similar grounds – have rocked the AFL.

“My resignation follows a wrong decision I made to have an inappropriate relationship with a female employee of the AFL. It is an action for which I am truly sorry for the hurt I have caused,” said Lethlean in a statement issued by the AFL.

“I have hurt the people who are most important in my life and who I love. They have done nothing to deserve this. I am deeply sorry for all the hurt and embarrassment I have caused.”

Lethlean said he wouldn’t be able to rebuild his marriage if he continued in the job.

“My priority now is to do everything I can to repair the damage and hurt I have caused my wife and my family and I cannot do this while working in this public role,” he said.

“Regaining the trust and love of my wife and my family will be my total focus.”

Simkiss also issued an apology via AFL statement.

“I have taken responsibility for my actions at work, and ask for privacy to take the time to focus on earning back the respect of my family, to whom I owe everything,” Simkiss said.

“My actions did not live up to the values of the AFL and is something I am truly sorry for.”

Andrew Dillon, AFL general counsel, will act in Lethlean’s position until a full-time replacement is appointed.

McLachlan said the new football chief was likely to come from outside head office.

As long as our journalists remain morally upright we're all ok, aren't we?

I don't really know why I read this article and then continued reading the comments but was pleasantly surprised when the topic went off track and people started talking about how to cross out words when posting on roar.

He did it with style, eh? Billy was alright. As I recall he had enjoyed a good night at a function with some sort of accolade in his direction and he enjoyed his last hours (he was widowed) with a familiar companion. Just 60 years old is a bit of a shame though.

Clearly I need to dig into this a little deeper. I appreciate your candid responses. And of course I understand now that the lollies being handed out are a reward that needs to be earned.

"Honorable Guru" gets thrust upon one by the Zavos family, not by the AFL. The sons of the estimable Spiro (Zac plus ?) founded The Roar and it is they who hand out the lollies around these parts. :) I couldn't quite meet the "wealthy" pre-requisite so I turned briefly to a period of thieving until I had saved up enough.

I'll start preparing immediately. A Zavos? I haven't a lot of interest in union these days. Do you know who the AFL equivalent would be? Or is it a Zavos only affair?

First you need to be wealthy, secondly you must wait to be "called" in an almost religious sense - a Zavos appears unannounced at your front door with a Channel X news crew for whom you are expected to enunciate clearly. If you utter a single "Ummm" whilst being interviewed they turn on their heels as one and depart. Quite intimidating really.

You’ve got to wonder what all the fuss on the bonking crime is about though, really. Forty years ago Germaine Greer reckoned everyone should be at it hammer and tongs all the time, with whoever was available; Bettina Arndt wondered why people were so surprised by it all; and I don’t know what Ugly-in-Every-Way Wilson’s position is – other than that James Hird should never be allowed any pleasure in his life of any type ever again. They are all adults made to sit close together in office coops, at a time in their lives when the primal instincts are highly tuned, the expense accounts are readily accessible and the competition for the strongest lion / most productive lioness is an ever present feature. It has ever been thus and the role of predator and predatee is instantly interchangeable, almost indistinguishable. To its credit the corporate sector regularly conducts continuing professional development on the subject for newcomers, publicly and for free – the current course is being offered by Channel Seven, Tim Worner and Amber Harrison in the NSW Supreme Court; seven or eight years ago it was Kristy Fraser-Kirk, who tilted for $37 million from David Jones and Mark McInnes and won a less handsome $850,000 including legal costs and expenses. It might have netted out to half that, which she thought for a little while was big money.

I had provided an awful lot of detail which got taken out, I assume due to relevance (or lack thereof) Anyways I'm a greens member so bound to disagree. Will leave it at that. I am telling you though, he really is that much of an airhead about his personal life I find it very very easy to believe he didn't even consider it. This interview from a few months ago is very indicative http://www.gq.com.au/success/opinions/scott+ludlum+malcolm+right+wingers+gq+interview,50235 He has also done a hell of a lot of drugs, and I can assure you when you do a lot of marijuana the little details stop becoming important.

Yeah, got the name wrong - sorry about that - thinking of the author I guess. Look, I'm not saying Ludlam is a crook or anything like that - I am saying that he strikes me as being too smart to be as oblivious as he would have to have been for your interpretation to be correct. Big picture or no, the issue of dual citizenship was front and center for months on end during the last Parliament. And actually, you haven't provided any detail at all. The events that have transpired, by which I assume you mean his resignation, are actually irrelevant to either your argument or mine - he had absolutely no choice once his problem became apparent, any more than the two AFL guys had. Perhaps less, given that there is a High Court ruling covering his situation. What matters is what went before - why he didn't rectify the situation years ago. You attribute it to the big-picture man ignoring the detail, I am less generous, but neither of us can ever know for certain. And why did this get moderated out? We're obviously disagreeing, and obviously we're off topic, but I've seen a whole lot worse on the Roar and I'm sure you have as well.

They have a "Guru" induction weekend at Crowne Plaza, Terrigal once every 2 years, for the select few. If one fails the first one they must return at their own expense next year. It cost me a bloody fortune because I failed the subject "Strike Out text" two years running.

Told you it was hard to demonstrate. The site simply will not display that symbol in isolation barring some bizarre formatting as you've worked out! Good job though, I admire your persistence! Hopefully Don appreciates your labours and we look forward to seeing strikethroughs through all the Freo players he's axing
