Beale softens the Hunt Bledisloe blow

By News / Wire

Karmichael Hunt has been ruled out of the Wallabies’ opening Bledisloe Cup Tests after undergoing ankle surgery.

The June Test debutant is expected to be sidelined for two months, which means he’ll miss Australia’s first four Rugby Championship clashes, including the first two Bledisloe Cup encounters in Sydney and Dunedin in August.

Hunt enjoyed a successful debut at inside centre for the Wallabies despite his team’s varying results, with his defensive intensity particularly noted.

His versatility and ability to play the second playmaker in conjunction with Bernard Foley added an attacking spark to the Wallabies backline.

The return of Kurtley Beale from overseas will greatly soften the blow as he was expected to take over at inside centre after Hunt started there last month.

Beale, who played for the English Club Wasps, was ruled out of the Wallabies June Tests after a hamstring injury during the Wasps semi final game against Leicester.

Last week, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika named Beale in the Wallabies training squad, and it was widely regarded that Beale would play at either the inside centre or fullback positions.

That is a fantastic team selection. Do you have Cheika's email address?

On the right Half back topic My observation (and this is just gut feel) Phipps gives fast service but I have never felt his accuracy was much good - passes were "unsympathetic" - quite often on the rise, head high. I thought Frisby was just as fast, more accurate and his running and kicking game (at the Reds anyway) had more variety. This year, both of their performances have tanked by their own, and their coaches standards. Tuttle and Gordon have seen a lot more game time. I think the future is bright for Gordon, I haven't been watching his defense closely enough to agree or disagree with you, but I will make a point to come NRC time. Bakkies, I don't agree on Stirzaker I thought he played well in a team crippled by injury. The first 60 minutes against the Jags was fantastic, then he and Mafi came off, along with the wheels. Gman - Box kicking is a great tool when executed properly and includes players chasing. The wallabies should be working on their skills, not running up hills.

I hadn't considered the Phipps angle. Ginea played nearly 80 mins in the last 2 games. He clearly doesn't trust Powell to finish You see TPN being good in the scrum and breakdown for 60-65 mins but his line out throw goes a bit wonky from about 50. Another one of those finesse vs fatigue things. This comes back to my endless rant that there is no room for defensive passengers at international level, or SR for that matter. someone has to pick up the slack, I hadn't noticed that Ginea and Phipps were doing it, I know that the number 8 dujour keeps getting injured and or dropped for not shouldering the extra burden. Chieka's reaction is to train the players harder and reduce kicking, where in my opinion he should play smarter, kick more (accurately) chase them and take the load off the players so that they can use their talents instead of their brawn to succeed.

If Coetzee doesn't select Rohan Janse van Rensburg to mark Beale he needs help.

Hey Marto, it's a pity Cheika doesn't pick teams to match his words - this would be his team. 1. Sio 2. TPN 3. Alaalatoa 4. Coleman 5. Arnold 6. RHP 7. McMahon 8. Timani 9. Gordon/Ruru 10. Lance 11. Korobiete 12. Meakes 13. TK 14. Folau 15. Hodge 16. Latu 17. Smith 18. Kepu 19. Tui 20. Higginbotham 21. Gordon/Ruru 22. Cooper 23. Beale In your face and abrasive 1-15. No need to hide anyone unless some spark is needed.

Fionn, thisintended for Guru Hoy. I just re-checked the Wallaby train-on squad. Quade Cooper is not listed. How will playing outside Cooper help Paia'aua?

Time to stop playing people out of position. Pick and stick I say. Here, I'll get you started. 1 TPN. Best scrummager. Will be able to hook as a prop under the ELVs. 3 Kurindrani. Slower than Kepu but will concede fewer penalties. 14 Hooper. Only spot for a non-passer. 15 Genia. Fields more high balls than anyone. Kicks well given time and space.

He drifts in and out... has a great game one week, not there the next. Not sure if 12 will be his long term spot, but it will help him being outside Cooper, seeing how he runs the game.

I made positive suggestions in 2016 after the thrashings against England..Cheika listened to us for a tiny moment, but then he reverted back to his normal coach clown self... ( Dropping players for no reason, picking injured players, picking players out of position, picking players not good enough and picking players he likes and supposedly trusts ).. etc etc How can you make a positive suggestion when the national coach is so negative.? I will continue my barrage upon him until he makes the correct selections ..He knows what those correct selections are, but he refuses to do it..

Hardly Aussie Rugbys Dunkirk and good thinking by Hunt to miss the coming matches . Little more than handy he does have the organisational skills that are sadly lacking on the field and in the boxes . The first things to settle permanently are the move of Folau to wing and on where Beale plays , it doesn't matter if it's 15 or 12 . Once that's done Kerevie or Kuridrani at 13 , Kuridrani is the better player but Kerevie gets more involved . Henry Speight is the best Fijian winger he reads the game , has pace and is the best defender physically and tactically . That leaves only one decision at 12 or 15 depending on Beale . At 12 we need an organiser so Hodge is out . Cooper , Lealiifano Meaks and Godwin all fill the bill . At 15 we have DHPand Hodge but I like Kelloway the only Tut Tah Chekko hasn't picked .

Folau isnt the worlds best 15. He attacks, mainly, on the right side of the park, like a right wing would. He has the worst kicking game for fullback in the entire club scene, including all major national comps. No other fullback I know of has such a weak kicking game. His positional game is OK but not great. He is fantastic under the highball and that is his only attribute that suggests he should play fullback. However Dagg and Jane play wing in NZ, both fantastic under the highball. Aus has it wrong and there is this crazy line of thinking (imo) that Folau must play fullback because of his ability under the highball. Hes a finisher that should be catching cross kicks on the right wing or finishing moves that better fullbacks create for him with more skilled kicking and creative work. If in NZ hed be playing wing for club and country imo.

Marto,do you have to regurgitate the same old stuff every time you sit at the keyboard? We know how much you love Cheika,so please give it a rest. How about making some positive suggestions, rather than just knocking everybody(well, every Tah that is).

James I'd like to see how Meakes works at 12. He's played the season there and his D seems really good to me. He also seems strong in terms of rucking and mauling. I don't think he passes as well as we'd like. for mine better an experienced 12 rather than parachute someone in there. I'd be happy enough if they persist with Hodge and try line up Kerevi. But Kerevi would need to play there for Qld. A while back someone on Roar (may have been you even) said Meakes is a good solid super standard player but not more. That rang true with me but I would like it to not be true and I don't know for sure yet. Maybe he just doesn't have that extra piece of talent. But I'd like a 12 who can defend first and foremost and then try to find a way to contribute in attack. I thought the Wallabies backline worked ok with Pat McCabe at 12 (although not so well with Grey at 12) and he was a crash player. CLL can play 12 but that shouldn't be for this year and he may be required to play 10 since he is a decent goal kicker and from memory is better than Foley.

Fionn I'm pretty sure BEALE would also rather see him run at Kerevi, Meakes or Godwin :)

Agree, he is in the frame for the RWC but this year is a season too early given there are other sensible options.
