Down by 15 points at the final change, the Giants stormed home, kicking 5.9 to 2.0 in the last term to secure a 13.20 (98) to 13.8 (86) victory at Spotless Stadium on Saturday.

The Giants kicked the first four goals of the final quarter but Fremantle notched the next two before a Josh Kelly major with two minutes to go condemned the Dockers to their eighth loss in their past nine games.

The unconvincing performance lifted GWS temporarily up to second on the ladder.

A brave Fremantle looked poised to spring a massive upset after kicking five goals to two in the third quarter.

But a more determined GWS started to dictate at the clearances and found the run denied to them earlier.

Shane Kersten provided a focal point up forward for Fremantle in the first half, bagging three of their six goals.

Fremantle looked banged up early, with Connor Blakely injuring a shoulder in first quarter and forced off permanently in the second quarter.

Brady Grey was also in the wars in with a shoulder problem in the second quarter, but returned to the field to kick two goals.

GWS also lost Will Setterfield who was forced off with concussion.

The Giants led by just two points at the first break and by as much as 15 in the second.

But Fremantle slammed on three of the last four goals of the quarter to trail by just one at the long break..

Shield doubled his possession tally in the final quarter, finishing with 26 just behind Kelly and the returning Stephen Coniglio.

Midfield stars Nat Fyfe and Lachie Neale logged 31 and 30 touches respectively for Fremantle.

Final score

GWS Giants 13.20 98
Fremantle Dockers 13.8 86

Rance is 194, Hurley is 193 and Lever is 195. Out of the four best...these 3 and Talia, Talia is tallest at 197. Logue is still growing. Alex Pearce played more at CHF than CHB and he did it well. Hurley and Hooker are excellent examples of swingmen. Cox, Logue and Pearce can all follow suit. No other young KPP has done any better than that 3 in their first years in recent times (apart from Lever). Pearce and Apeness have a better chance to kick goals when their broken bones heal...funny that.

Apeness is still a big question mark - 7 games, 3 goals I doubt Alex Pearce is a CHF, seeing as he was brilliant at CHB in his few games then I would leave him down there with Hamling to control the backline. Wikipedia says Logue is 193, Freo web site says 189 ... don't know which to believe But nowadays 193cm isn't a KPP back, especially when the opposition plays Lobb and Patton. Anyhoo - I cannot seem too many goals having been kicked in anger with KPP forwards since Pav. The best in the last decade was Keplar with 25 in a season

Cox is going to be good. I was starting to have doubts about Logue. No doubt he's a great athlete, etc., but he was seeming too unsure, and I was wondering if the relative lack of footy background was going to leave him always behind the 8 ball. Last couple of games, though, he's been showing some smarts, so there's hope. I'd still like to see him given more of a run in the forward 50. My biggest worry is Pearce, and what he'll be like having missed 20 months of football. Now he was a player who showed his smarts from game one.

Apeness has done well when he has played. He has just been injured. An excellent draft...that's the point. Alex Pearce was playing CHF. Just a gun! Logue is 193cm...that's wrong. Collins is depth...it doesn't mean he is not a good draft Cox is just a wonderful, tough, fast and skilled 18yo. He is way ahead of schedule. Certainly ahead of Hogan, Patton, McCartin, Charlie Dixon, Tom Boyd at the same time of their careers. You can expect 18yo talls to take some time. These guys are really, really strong drafts. The recruiting has not been "awful" at all. The broken bones have been "awful" however.

Sigh. Don we have no real full forward, or a centre half forward, and we haven't for 20+ years. Pav was forced to do everything. Imagine if we had of had Kennedy as a full forward the last 5 years, or even someone half as good. We would have a flag by now. They don't grow on trees but every other club has seemed to find one over the same time frame except us. I might add that I have yet to see Apeness play a good game of footy and Collins is a back up role player at best. No one has seen Pearce for years. Optimism for the sake of it gets us nowhere.

Apeness is still unproven, Collins is depth at the moment. Cox is on the fringe of KPP, Logue is only 189cm according to his bio and is more a defender who can play tall or small and add the dash from the backline. Alex Pearce is going to be good when he gets back on the park. Maybe we should say KPP forwards is the issue currently. Consistent goal kickers

I agree. Our recruiting team is fantastic at finding mids but beyond awful at finding kpp's.

Good game from the Dockers kids, but very fumbly from the Giants. Good signs again from Cox, Ryan, Darcy, Tucker and Logue, showing that whoever is in charge fo the last few years worth of drafts has been getting it right. Balic was the correct call as far as skill goes, but he's now trade bait. Weller continues to impress with his coverage and pace, and Hughes is locking down his defensive post. Naughton from Peel would have been nice to help with the tall GWs forwards, so he's definitely firming as the Dockers first pick in the draft, hopefully they don't go with a midfielder!!!

Good game. Blakely has been our best player this year and him going down early hurt us. Freo were pretty dominant for much of the game but unfortunately went into our shells with a few minutes to go in the third until halfway through the last. Then we were right back in it. Shiel ran amok in the last quarter. The biggest positive was Steven Hill finding form again. I thought the tackling by both teams was terrible all day. To be honest if that is the best gws have they will go straight out this year- need their best players back asap. Logue is getting better every game, as is Ryan. Fyfe was great as was Neale. Am still concerned by Brad Hills disposal. McCarthy needs time in the wafl. Kersten really starting to show something. It is funny this time of year. You always want your team to win but in some ways this is the best result. A close game against a top 4 team that shows you are on track, but you also get closer to a better draft position. With Blakely and Walters now gone we will see what he have.

Giants having late season down time, big will turn it around as finals approach Another solid building crowd in comparison to previous freo fixtures. Footy looking increasingly solidified in WS

Yeah, pretty much ^this. GWS woke up and started playing like a team full of 1st round draft picks.

Yes...it has been a major issue all year. That's what happens when you have a team of lesser names. Happens to Brissy, NM and Gold Coast too. You do know how a footy ladder works, don't you Eric? What's your opinion of Griffin Logue? Hint...he plays footy.

Gosh! Those pesky umpires robbing your team of premiership points week in week out!! Still - with all these "winnable games" probably still finish 7th eh don ?

That's fair, and probably accurate. I'm still very, very happy with the performance. Should be a win against Gold Coast next week, and then hopefully we can take it up to Sydney the week after.

It was an experienced finals bound side that just got the better of a young side who were a man on the bench. It was more about GWS playing better than Freo being bad in the last quarter. We had some chances but probably should have been put away a bit earlier as GWS were inaccurate. Can't see them winning the flag on that performance though.

First three quarters the Giants were fumbling and look a little lost. Freo players were unmarked, Kelly couldn't catch a cold and Lobb look a little down. Then all of a sudden they looked like they flicked the switch, said to themselves we're better then this and started to dig in. For the first five minutes of the final quarter they looked like the prelim side of last year, and looked what happened. It was remarkable. There is so much improvement in them. When the Giants play the Hawthorn possession game it looks wrong, they can't do it.

Free kicks in crucial spots to them...none to us for the same things. This included an almost mark paid to them 40 metres out and definite marks not paid to us 30 metres out twice. Plus a coat hanger to Fyfe 20 metres out not given. It wasn't a fade out. They came out of the blocks in the last quarter with 4 quick goals and we pegged them back. We were running as strongly as them by the end.

Good comments, thanks Don. Didn't get to see the game so it's good to have an insight! What do you think our last quarter fade-out was due to? We just couldn't handle the GWS pressure, or what? Genuinely curious here!
