WATCH: Wallaroos crash out of Rugby World Cup contention after heavy defeat

By News / Wire

Australia have lost 48-0 to France to crash out of semi-final contention at the women’s rugby union World Cup in Ireland.

The Wallaroos are winless after conceding eight tries in their second group match in Dublin on Sunday.

They sit third in pool C after their narrow loss to the host nation Ireland last week to begin their campaign.

Winger Shannon Izar did the damage for France, completing a hat-trick by the 25th minute as the world No.4 side took a 29-0 lead into halftime.

Australia’s attack was repeatedly undone by turnovers while the opposition benefited from the dominance of their forwards, who completed 16 offloads to two.

Inside centre Chloe Pelle picked up a doubled, while French flanker Romane Menager was named player of the match.

Ireland and France are both undefeated after the home side saw off the last-placed pool C side Japan 24-14 on Sunday.

Four-time champions New Zealand are top of pool A after trouncing Hong Kong 121-0, while Canada are also undefeated thanks to a 15-0 win over Wales.

Defenders England beat Italy 56-13 in pool B, while the USA claimed a 43-0 win over Spain.

The top-four seeded teams go through to the semi-finals.

I beg to differ look at the crowd numbers they are negligible, is only benefiting the elite level further most players want to play XV

I agree on Woodman but look at the Aussie 7's and Canada 7's some of those players on professional contracts were not allowed to participate in the WC. I am permanently based in the UK and like in many countries they play XV in winter and spring and 7's in the summer. With the UK at least I know 7's is a more relaxed time. all players I met enjoy playing XV far more than 7's, I am not denying there is no problem there is a real issue. Unfortunately the Olympic funding to decide the future of rugby is the wrong approach and is letting the tail wag the dog with a vengeance and here we are. The decision to reduce the amount of participating teams has affected continents like Africa

7's is the more popular form of the game with Wonen at the moment, it shouldn't be constrained to accommodate 15s as it is a gage in its own right.

There was a real difference in conditioning levels Dani. The French forwards look like gym-conditioned athletes. The Aussies apart from Mollie Gray not so much. In the backs, the French were smaller but considerably quicker and more skilled. Aussies were generally relying on straight running hoping the size difference would tell. It didn't. I think theyll beat up on Japan because it's a good match up size wise and won't be surprised Japan save some key players for playoffs but have to say that was a poor score line yesterday.

Aussieinexile I don't know about that... look at Woodman, from netball to 7s and now to XVs. She certainly has the skill set. 7s certainly can assist in developing rugby skills as the emphasis of that game is both fitness, one on one defense, counter rucking and running / passing skills. Accept 7s isn't a game for all shapes and sizes. But then 15s isn't anymore either. It's a fine line and let's hope WR can balance both forms of the game. Commercially and developmentally 7s is going to take priority. Hopefully it can assist in also growing 15s rather than killing it.

The Wallaroos have played maybe half a dozens games since the last world cup which is a complete load of crap. The womens world cup isn't going to evolve if half the bloody teams don't play games between tournaments. And what are the unions doing? Can't WR and the unions not work out some form regular international matches for these teams? 6 Nations ladies at least get 5 games a year, is it too much to ask to have something resemble a women's Rugby Championship? WR is killing the XV Game slowly for 7's and Olympic glory and a whole generation will miss out as they make the sport elitist. This push for 7's worldwide in women's isn't helpful. 7's doesn't provide the same skill and playing conditions to make good Rugby Player, you need XV and diverting funds and not providing tournaments doesn't help. Further not every Athlete can play 7's but 7's players can play XV is a matter of logic.

To me this morning's game mirrored the Wallaroos performance in the June series, where they competed well against NZ only to struggle in their following game against Canada. They just couldn't keep their form and focus from the Irish game, and against strong French pressure couldn't manage their set pieces and tired in general play. The lack of a kicking game is quite an Achilles heel for them. Oh for some funding for regular domestic competition... though the hows and how muches is obviously the problem here... especially now!!!

And on Fri the ex head honcho Little Bill was crowing about the womens great achievement only losing by a small margin to the Ireland ladies.Happy to say good bye to you.Hard to compete at international level in such a terrible enviorment, and we have to front up to an ABs team just jumping out of their skins raring to go at us in just 5 days. I know the rest of ERU board will not be unemployable elsewhere but please front up and do the right thing Australian rugby does not need your irresponsible race to the bottom any longer.

I'm surprised anyone has fallen for that bait, not least you! You don't think his signature might be a bit of a giveaway...?

Who bloody well cares - women's rugby is an abomination. The ARU gets rid of the Force and keeps funding women's rugby - what a joke !
