Bangladesh vs Australia: Cricket live scores, blog, 1st Test Highlights - Day 4

By Suneer Chowdhary / Roar Guru

Match Result:

Bangladesh have defeated Australia for the first time in their Test history with an incredible 20-run victory.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was the hero with 10 wickets for the match. He picked up the crucial scalps of David Warner (112), Usman Khawaja (1), Steve Smith (37), Glenn Maxwell (14) and Matthew Wade (4) in a tense day four.

Maxwell’s wicket was a turning point with the Australian falling on the first ball after lunch.

Pat Cummins finished unbeaten on 33 not out but he ran out of partners.

Day four preview

David Warner and Steve Smith led an Australian resurrection on the third day, but will that be enough for them to hold off Bangladesh? Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of Day 4 from 2pm (AEST).

Day 3 belonged to Australia after the two previous days saw the hosts take control.

Bangladesh could have run away with the game by piling on the runs, especially in the absence of Josh Hazlewood. He suffered a side strain and it was later revealed he had been ruled out of the rest of the tour, leaving Australia a bowler short.

Instead, it was Nathan Lyon who took up the gauntlet, picking up six wickets as well as running out captain Mushfiqur Rahim. In the process, he put the hosts in trouble after they had got themselves to 3/135 at one stage.

Even then, a target of 265 was never going to be a cakewalk for the Aussies.

Sure, the Australian side had shown glimpses of a change in their approach in the sub-continent, but their win in Pune against India earlier this year had come batting first. Now, they needed to chase down a solid total on a crumbling pitch.

When Matt Renshaw and Usman Khawaja departed in quick succession and Smith was almost sent back off the first ball he faced, a capitulation looked like it was a near certainty.

But Smith settled himself and shrugged off the early nerves while Warner played what is already one of his best – if not the best – knock in such conditions. Unbeaten on 75, he has scored nearly 70 per cent of his team’s runs and done it by blending attack and defence in equal measure.

Going into the penultimate day, Australia might be the bookmakers’ favourite, but they will know from experience a wicket could lead to many more.

A new batsman might not have it as easy, as has been the case for even an accomplished batsman like Smith, who has mostly played well within himself at the other end.

The first session, as a result, will be the most crucial of the Test match, and if Australia can see themselves through without much damage, they could well be writing another chapter in their history of tough Test match run-chases.

Why bother following the Aussies around for the Ashes save all year for one thing, they don't deserve my money. CA got shafted should have sacked them all and rebuilt from ground up. Warner should go back to pushing trolleys at woolworse, keep in mind he got dropped early damn lucky.

Is that your understanding of motor sports? In singapore for the Sunday evening race the drivers have their first crack at the circuit on Friday late afternoon then Friday night then on Saturday late afternoon and then Saturday night is the race for pole position. Am sure other races are the same.

LMAO. Pity you bunch of overpaid spoilt brats don't fight on the field as hard as you do for a pay increase. CA should have sacked you all told you all to F off to the nearest T20 bash and picked players who value playing for their country. Hope you lose the next and then the Ashes so none of you prima donnas have a contract to strike over next season! Sutherland you were soft and have handed the Australian public more poor performances like this going forward

Well done Bangladesh. Played for pride and your country rather than your agent and union.

Not exactly Aussies fault. There was a tour match as per schedule. But called off due to poor conditions.., http://www.espncricinfo.com/bangladesh-v-australia-2017/content/story/1117380.html May be a strategy from BCB.. hehe.. Well played Bangladesh indeed..

That is why the All Blacks are so amazing. Wherever they play (hot, cold, wet, dry, windy, under a roof, at night, in the day, at altitude etc) they turn up and perform.

Shakib al Hasan wins the man-of-the-match award. 10 wickets and a half-century in the game. Rocket man-of-the-match award. Shakib takes over the microphone from the commentator and addresses the crowd in Bengali. Ends with "thank you for supporting the team."

Mushfiqur Rahim: Great feeling beating Australia. Our performance at home has been pretty consistent and we have a good belief in our own abilities. Tamim and Shakib batted well and the bowling partnership between Shakib and Taijul did well as well. Lot of room for improvement. The pitch was tough to bat on, so cannot really blame the batsmen or the lower-order. We missed a few catches too. Keeping was tough, keeping was like keeping to a snake. Thank the crowd for their support.

Presentation: Steve Smith: Great Test, credit to Bangladesh the way they played. Shakib and Tamim set it up for them in the first, let ourselves down in the first innings with the bat. Difficult to bat in the second, thought we did well to get to 240. Tail did a good job, helped our batsmen well. Need our batsmen to do well in the first innings. No excuses about adjustment, practice wickets were good, nets were good, difficult to bat against variable bounce but we should have done well in the first innings. Warner's worked very hard, and the plans he had were outstanding. Well-deserved 100. Never felt very in, one of those pitches and as I said, needed to take a lead in the first innings. Sets up for a good series.

A few pressing questions for Australia with respect to selections. Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out. Usman Khawaja has brought a huge scanner on himself. And Matthew Wade is...well, he is Matthew Wade. Australia have called upon a spinner in Steve O'Keefe to replace Hazlewood in the squad. Who do they play in the second Test? Does either Swepson or O'Keefe replace Hazlewood? In that case, does Cartwright get a look-in for that second seam bowling option? If that's the case, who does he replace? Wade? With Handscomb taking over the gloves? Or do Australia keep it simple and replace Hazlewood with Bird?

What always amazes me about the top F1 drivers is they can walk into a new car on a new track and be on the absolute limit straight away. You can't say the Aus cricket team has that sort of ability to adapt.

Australia had Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon and David Warner doing their best to bail the side out of trouble. Unfortunately for them, the lack of support from the other end, whether with the bat or ball, was a huge issue.

Congrats to Bangladesh. The ONLY defence I have for the Aussies was that they did not have one tour match to adjust to conditions. Tours have been so devalued now.

I think its a sad state of Australian cricket. Not the result, but the fact that we're happy a result like this will force change. Our awful performances in Asia cannot be tolerated any more. "Horses for courses" seems to only apply for India. We picked Khawaja in Bangladesh knowing he doesn't know which end of the bat to hold when playing spin. We pick Wade "for his batting". We ignore his substandard keeping but amazingly, ignore his substandard batting too. which is the only reason he's in the team.

Shakib al Hasan has been the star of the show for Bangladesh. As I had tweeted the other day, Shakib said before the start of the series he would love Bangladesh to whitewash Australia in this series and it looks like he's taking himself quite seriously. A 10-wicket haul to go with a brilliant half-century that turned things around in the favour of his side.
