Wallabies DIY player ratings vs Argentina: The results

By The Roar / Editor

The results are in! Yesterday, we asked you to rate the Wallabies side that took to the field against Argentina, and now we’ve added up the data from all of our responders to bring you our DIY player ratings from the Test.

Australia got a 17-point win over the home side but none of the players in the side earned phenonmenally high ratings. Reece Hodge finished on top with an average rating of 7.62, with Tatafu Polota-Nau and Will Genia close behind.

The Wallabies didn’t have any obvious weak links, with all of the starting players rating at least a five or better. Tevita Kuridrani, with a 5.32, was our lowest-rated starter, but not by any great margin.

Check out the full results below, and let us know what you think in the comments.

'I still think L.Tui should be groomed as a #8. Tui is good at #6 but a mite slow and unlikely to ever play that position as a starter, whereas he is perfect for a #8. He has a big body who loves being in the thick stuff, good runner with the ball and a fair lineout target.' Really good points :)

I too have been critical, But I saw him make 2 noteworthy clean outs. So I must give credit where it is due. Not sure what a normal count for a 7 Looks like. Todd, Cane and Kolisi must have collectively got through 20 in their game.

Pretty right there Fionn, you can add that L.Tui can also fill in as lock if a disaster happens and two locks go down wounded. It just means the back row would have to play the full 80 minutes, which they are all capable of doing. I thought Jack Dempsey went ok, I gave him a 6½. I thought it strange that he moved to #8 when L.Tui came on who played as blindside. JD still seems a bit gun-shy cleaning out the big boys from breakdowns but he tackled hard and was a dangerous runner with the ball. There was one run, about the 29th minute from memory, where he ran over the top of 1st tackler and bumped off the 2nd bloke. Now THAT's what I wanna see a blindside/#8 do. I still think L.Tui should be groomed as a #8. Tui is good at #6 but a mite slow and unlikely to ever play that position as a starter, whereas he is perfect for a #8. He has a big body who loves being in the thick stuff, good runner with the ball and a fair lineout target.

I thought these ratings were a bit tough. Played Argentina in Mendoza. Tough gig. Apart from foleys kicking I thought the wallabies were quite good.

I've been highly critical of his ineffective cleanouts in the past. He was very good in that area this week. A vast improvement by him and the tight five in this area since the first draw against SA where our ruck protection was abysmal.

Rhys, assuming that is true (I think he can play 60 mins well and then fades, you’re right there) he doesn’t need to go for the full 80 minutes, just 60. Coleman is an 80 minute player, and there is always at least one lock on the bench to come on. We definitely don’t need both Simmons and Rodda in the 23. Coleman-Rodda-Arnold can make up the 3 locks in the team between each other. Rodda has been okay but he just doesn’t have the impact of Arnold.

Doesn't have the motor for a test lock IMO, he can rather go like a bull at a gate for 60 then flakes, or paces himself and is ineffective. It's a shame because he is such a huge specimen.

Must've watched a different game, when he hits he bounced not the opposition being flattened like he was doing 12 months ago

So the average for each player is 6.2 and we are happy with this?!!! Goes to show how poor these guys are, and how low our expectations are.

Yes. Selecting better options is not Cheika's strong suit. Let him keep his head down working on coming up with a game plan. It will be interesting to watch NZ exploit the lack of positional nouse that all League converts have when they transition over. He's about to be found out. TK played one of his best games after he was recently dropped. Time to rotate him out again?

I agree that Izzy's post-contact meters were pretty great, but that was about it. And the Aussie gameplan has big expectations for him to not only break the gain line but scythe through. I thought the Argies defended against him really well. They went in with really low tackles that wrapped up his ankles and then a second player prevented the offload

I thought Hooper was excellent, his protection on our ruck ball was excellent. Dempsey made more runs but lacked urgency when we didn't have the ball and while better than Hanigan struggled to make his cleanouts. Was the tight five and Hooper that gave us any continuity at all.

The Rory Arnold situation is quite mysterious. Seemingly he has all the right skills and physical capabilities, which suggests there may be some sort of concentration/motivation/discipline issues going on.

Yes. Hodge was definitely the MOTM. He has an incredibly bright future, I must say. He's only 23.

Agree, I thought Rodda was a little better than he scored and Coleman a little worse. A couple of other scores feel a bit more as if they are based on reputation rather than observation but only minor adjustments required.

The Wallabies took control when Moore and Simmons came on. Speight was not really required.
