AFL trade news and rumours Day 6 wrap: Steven Motlop, Jack Watts, Hayden Crozier

By Josh / Expert

Port Adelaide is set to secure a triple treat this trade period and at low cost, after they signed free agent Steven Motlop on Friday and with news that Jack Watts is set to nominate the club as his preferred destination.

News broke on Friday afternoon that Motlop had settled on joining Port Adelaide, despite reports of there being a much more lucrative financial offer on the table from the Adelaide Crows.

Port Adelaide formally confirmed they had lodged paperwork to acquire him as a free agent shortly after, and while Geelong are yet to formally rule out matching their bid for him, it is understood they have no interest in doing so.

Regarding Watts, there is yet to be any official confirmation from himself or the Power of his intentions to join the club, but it has been said that he will take the weekend to consider his decision but is almost certain to pick Port Adelaide.

That would mean that Port have acquired all three of Motlop, Watts and Tom Rockliff this trade period, certainly a high profile performance in October. Just how far those three can lift them in 2018 will be fascinating to watch play out, but let’s talk more about that when the dust settles.

Motlop’s deal is reportedly worth about $2 million over four years.

We did have one trade done today.

Hayden Crozier and Fremantle Dockers’ 2018 fourth-round pick traded to Western Bulldogs for pick 40 and pick 82.

All in all a fairly minor piece of business – I’d be lying if I said Crozier had done much to catch my eye in six seasons at Fremantle.

The Dogs are reportedly looking to use him as a halfback to replace Bob Murphy or Matthew Boyd, which is where he has played good footy, if not particularly a lot of it.

In other news, Sydney’s Daniel Robinson added his name to the list of players potentially on the move by requesting a trade, but it’s not clear at this stage if there’s any real interest in him.

Motlop’s signing with Port Adelaide may also mean bad luck for Charlie Cameron who Adelaide are now less likely to let go. Brisbane have reportedly offered pick 19 in exchange for him.

i agree on the Fast Mobile Defence Theory but they should have least tried a trade. Hard to see how they could get Naughton he will be gone before pick 40. With Pearce,Logue ,Hamling Cox,Ryan,Hughes and Probably Wilson there is no need for J.ohnson or Collins

Collins will be behind Pearce, Logue, Hamling, Cox at Freo in defence. Doubtful Freo are after Naughton, but he'd be behind him as well. I'd say Freo are after a fast, mobile defence and Collins does not fit that category. Freo delisted him as this probably enhances his ability to get on a list, as clubs see him as a free hit rather than a trade.

In response to your comment Johnson retired Collins in Dumb ! Johnson is 33 years old currently in Court (Again)has been Found Guilty to drug related charges in the past. Freo are not in the Premier ship window.Every chance he will break down again.Collins as you have said is good AFL footballer 24Years old (Best to Come) Should not have been delisted.

Football is a business first ! Respect is not about giving away young good players for nothing.

The coach conflict story has been around for a long time. Sam knows that. The reason he gave yesterday is the reason I have been giving you all year for him not getting a game. Sam deserves a game but the 2 players he was never going to displace were Hamling and Johnson. You want Johnson retired and Sam in. That is just dumb. Sam didn't get games. That was the source of the conflict. Sam gave that reason because it is gentle. The reasons spoken everywhere was that he was unhappy with not getting a game and got more vocal. If Freo keep Collins as trade bait, they don't treat him with respect. This way he is free to have conversations with anyone and end up where he gets more opportunities instead of being forced somewhere else. He gets more choice. That's respect. Freo does that well. Now on your last insistence about this trade for Matera, Freo has got plenty of draft picks down the line that will satisfy Gold Coast. It's not as if Matera is going to command anything in the first 3 rounds.

The Question i asked was why would Freo delist Collins and try not try a trade for him ? EG. Swap for Matera.? Someone gets him for nothing, Why!

The Question asked was not why Collins was delisted. Collins himself said yesterday the reason why by Lyon himself and it was nothing to do with the story you made up about Webb and Shepheard.

Guess we'll find out soon enough because he should get to his preferred destination.

I've already explained that to you. You just don't like the answer.

Why Freo delisted Collins and did try not get something for him swap for Matera would have been worth a try someone WILL pick him up for nothing. Why did they pick him only 2 years ago anyway. Good luck to him.

That's Fox guessing. Fox Footy has no idea about AFL in WA. Freo don't need him. They'll take him if he's cheap enough. 40s is way overs.

Dusty would have been a 1st round pick not an end of first round pick. Since Richmond won the GF those two picks are the same.

If the Suns except that then they may as well have delisted him. I think they'll want pick 41. He was best 22 before he was injured. Certainly talented and knows where the goal is, but lazy and injury prone.

Have to admit I don't understand the compensation pick system - apparently, Rockliff, Motlop and Dusty Martin are equivalent players as they are all worth an end-of-first-round compo pick (mooted Tigers pick had Dusty moved). I'd imagine Cats would be ecstatic to get that for a player they didn't even want. It should help the Ablett move to occur, though.

He will only cost somewhere in the 80s as a draft selection. No risk there. He is certainly behind Walters, Ballas, Bennell and Grey up forward and a long way behind Langdon, Weller, Blakely as a high half forward/winger. OK backup, though. The difference might be his freedom from Rocket Eade. Under a coach like Ross, he should get some consistency. He'll certainly be stuck at Peel if he continues to play at only 60% of his ability as he has all his career.

Do you really think they would recruit Matera and think he may well be mostly be at Peel.

Massive news. Ablett's sister has just died. Unknown at this stage cause of death, but we know Ablett wanted to move home to be closer to his family.
