Hits and misses in the domestic one-day cup

By TheRev / Roar Pro

In case you missed it, the Australian domestic one-day cricket tournament began a few weeks ago.

It’s been rebranded the JLT Cup after its new sponsor, meaning the old sponsorship of barbecue manufacturer Matador is over, which may have been a result of all the ads for Weber during the coverage last summer.

The tournament features an array of present and future Australian cricket stars, with the best of each state (who aren’t on national duty) participating, as well as a youth team playing under the ‘Cricket Australia XI’ banner. I can only assume the XI refers to their median age.

Still, having a team of future stars is a lot more exciting than watching a bunch of has-beens making fools of themselves. If I wanted to watch that, I’d be tuning into the Footy Show.

The tournament is being given a little more credibility than previous seasons, when it was played over a ridiculously short period of time, in NSW only, to ensure there was enough time to run the other summer tournaments including the BBL, the BBL, the BBL and a few Tests.

Unlike the previous Sydney bias, this season’s matches are being played in other major cricketing centres, such as Brisbane, Perth and Drummoyne.

That the comp is being played with so little promotion is more than a little odd, particularly considering that Cricket Australia just signed a multi-million dollar deal with Sony to broadcast Australian matches into Asia.

You’d have thought that Sony could stretch a little further to help allow our good friends abroad watch James Faulkner bowl to Usman Khawaja, but perhaps JLT have pockets as deep as the soft tissue massages they offer.

Despite the lack of promotion, or perhaps because of it, the tournament has been intriguing. No team seems to be decidedly dominant, with the strong batting line-up of South Australia being beaten by the previously inept Tasmanians and the infantile CAXI, then beating the perennially strong NSW shortly afterwards.

For all the lack of promotion, this is still a great tournament and one I hope that is soon available to more people than the good folk of Drummoyne.

If I got onto Twitter or Facebook, I'd never get any work done. Maybe when I retire... Check out the station on line; www.sportfm.com.au/listen-live-913/ Held together by a veteran sports administator, Colin Minson, former President of East Fremantle Footy Club and Rockingham/Mandurah Cricket Club. Many of the presenters are student volunteers doing media training and hoping for a broadcasting career. Tune in for breakfast radio with the very funny former Test swing bowler, Wayne Clark, and the even funnier, often hilarious, Kim Hughes.

G'day Don - great points around the coverage issues. It sounds like the good folk at 91.3 are doing a great job. I'd love to learn more if you want to get in touch via Twitter. Cheers

Another great day of ODD cricket...unreported, even by the ABC. Cricket Australia needs to lift its game and pay media outlets to cover cricket. In WA, a small volunteer radio station in Fremantle (Sport FM) covers every domestic WA game right around the country but each year it is close to losing its licence because of funds. Cricket Australia would benefit big time from covering all their costs. They broadcast district cricket and regularly feature the veterans and the up and coming youth as guest commentators in their coverage. I teach at a cricket specialist school and the kids all follow 91.3 Sport FM. Junior cricket is thriving in WA. Support it and televise it. State cricket is a better product than Test cricket against minnows. To raise AFL or rugby style consciousness, all Cricket Australia needs is to put cricket in front of the people. It is a cash cow waiting to be promoted. How were the efforts of Ferguson, Klinger, Mitch Marsh, Will Sutherland, Matt Short and, especially, Chad Sayers when all looked lost for the Redbacks? Watch the cricket folk! It's great.

I had to check when this article was written...13/10/17. Yet you say, "No team seems to be decidedly dominant..." One team has won 4 games and lost none. Everyone else has played 5 games and lost 2 or more. Mitch Marsh's mob seem to be pretty dominant to me...and they are the only side not to have played the kids yet. Now they get their Aussie reps back and I reckon one of them isn't good enough to get a game.

I don't see QLD winning it this year. Our batting has talent but no consistency. Our collapses have cost us so much over the last few years and don't seem to be going away, with only Hopes and Hartley able to stem the tide in the past. Our bowling is not good enough to win games on their own so they need the batsmen to do their job and put up good scores all year. I can't see Stanlake playing much if at all. Swepson needs to have a good season for us and for his national team chances. The good thing for QLD is that we should have a full strength team(baring Pat Howard selection interference with Stanlake) for maybe up to 8 rounds of the season. I don't think NSW are in with a chance to be honest. Without their Aus stars they just don't have enough bowling talent to knock sides over. If WA players are not picked for Aus, they have the talent in both batting and bowling, with consistent performances that they should be favorites. Vics will be there too but not sure how they will go with the slow changing of personnel. Wade leaving, Maxwell maybe with the Aus team for most of the season, Siddle nearing retirement. Quiney gone. SA look better than most think, they can make the final but not sure they will, gut tells me they will miss out. I am picking a WA - SA/VIC final.

Thanks for that link, that’s a very nice video (straight to Peter Nevill’s pool room I should think).

It was indeed! Leg side wide to a left hander. Umpire Wilson only gave it wide as an afterthought! Nevill's 8 are shown here with the last one at 1:55 http://www.cricket.com.au/video#videoId=5601764314001

Congratulations, you get the door prize! I wasn’t watching but I saw the CA blog call of the wicket and according to that it was an excellent piece of wicket keeping by Nevill - and made his eigth dismissal for the innnings.

John - the streaming of every match on the CA website and app is actually quite good. Multiple cameras, good on screen graphics of the score etc, and decent commentary including Lisa Sthalekar and Mel Jones. Not quite as good as seeing the game live but really not a bad effort from CA.

I was actually watching the end of this match so am able to answer your tricky question! Maddinson took the last wicket to fall with a stumping off a wide. Hence 1 wicket, 1 run for the wide but no legal delivery. Funny game cricket! :)

350 looks par on that deck and field. QLD never looked like getting enough, even with that big partnership. Starc was fantastic for them today.

Seeing that Qld hit 292 off 41 overs the other day, still 11 runs short of WA's D/L adjusted total,it's probably not enough. And they only took 3 wickets in WA's innings... NSW still have to beat Victoria after this, assuming they conquer Qld, to get in the final and hope that WA beat SA. WA is the standout team, they've taken the most wickets per game, without NCN ,Tye or Behrendorff. They have the best batsman,Shaun Marsh, whose average is 117. The final is on neutral ground which also suits WA

Yeah i cant work out why Cricket Australia just dont offer it to a network for free. What do they have to lose. You think with networks now having multiple channels one of the networks would do the coverage. Also love the idea of 8 teams playing each otger twice over 14 rounds.

NSW are my pick for the JLT Cup, just pipping WA. The Shield is pretty open I think. WA and NSW will be strong in that too, VIC have a really good, experienced and well-rounded side and SA have a really strong batting lineup plus a good attack with Sayers, Mennie, Worrall and Zampa. Tas will struggle in the Shield and QLD have a decent batting lineup but lack strikepower with the ball - they really need Stanlake to stay fit and be their spearhead.

282 for QLD, I don't think that is enough.

QLD top order has finally put on some runs and hopefully set up a decent score.
