Grand final rematch headlines Round 1 as 2018 AFLW draw is revealed

By Daniel Jeffrey / Editor

The draw for the 2018 AFL Women’s season has been announced, with a blockbuster grand final rematch between the Adelaide Crows and Brisbane Lions to headline the opening round.

As was the case last year, the season will begin with a clash between Carlton and Collingwood at Ikon Park, to be played on Friday, February 2. Last year’s fixture saw thousands of people locked out of the ground after a capacity crowd turned up to see the inaugural match of the competition.

Melbourne will start their season off a day later against the GWS Giants at Casey Fields before the Crows and Lions meet at Norwood Oval. Round 1 will conclude with a meeting between the Bulldogs and Dockers.

Round 2 will see the first ever game of Australian rules footy played at the new Perth Stadium when Fremantle go up against Collingwood. The match will be the only game of the season which fans will have to pay an admission fee to attend.

The grand final will be played on Saturday, March 24 at a yet-to-be-determined time and venue.

All matches throughout the season will be broadcast by Fox Footy, with the Seven Network also showing nine games. All fixtures will be streamed live on the AFL Live app and afl.com.au.

The Friday night game GWS v Carlton at Drummoyne oval will be a good one, both clubs and the venue will make for an excellent night. Girls AFL is going gangbusters in Sydney, enrolments double triple each successive year and schools starting to field teams, it's an excellent time to be involved and track the girls playing through from Auskick, now that they can. The issue we have in Sydney with junior AFL both boys and girls is finding grounds for the growth.

You're probably right except when entrance to a game is basically free, there is no "selling out"

Call me pessimistic but I don't think there's much hope of the game selling out a 60K stadium.

Is it first in best dressed or do you need to book?
