Wallabies DIY player ratings vs Wales: The results

By The Roar / Editor

The results are in! Yesterday we asked you to help us rate the performance of our Wallabies in their match against Wales. We’ve crunched the numbers and have all the results below.

Will Genia’s return to the Wallabies side couldn’t have gone better – he was a clear best on ground in the eight-point win over Wales, and picked up a most common rating of 9 and average rating of 8.43 this week, head and shoulders above the rest of the team.

At the other end of the scale, Ned Hanigan continues to get no love, no love at all with an average rating of 4.75 this week, the lowest in the team. At this stage, we expect he could cure cancer next week and still be rated worst on ground.

On the bench, Karmichael Hunt was the eyecatcher, with a 6.08 average – better than we usually see from the replacements. Perhaps it’ll prove to be the precursor to a spot in the starters against England next week.

Check out the full results below and let us know what you thinking in the comments.

Not having an out and out fetcher cost us many penalties at the breakdown, almost cost us the match, re the Hooper YC. Jones will have noticed. What will it cost this weekend? Where's The button to rate Cheika?

Phipps did play very well against Japan. A lot of our threatening attack was down to his snappy and accurate distribution. However, it's his decision making under pressure against better teams that keeps him from starting. Genia has been excellent in recent weeks (after one of the worst games I've seen him in when the ABs put 50 on us). Phipps is also a great defending sub.

Hannigan played with intensity and competed well at the lineout- an area of improvement for the wallabies. Unfortunately he was rag-dolled in contact. Against a big England pack that will not end well Moore came on and gave a master class in game management with a player in the bin and back to the wall. That's the reason you need old heads up front in the nh

'Not a single one of his passes went behind the man, every single one was accurate and fast.' That's not true. No one, not even Aaron Smith, has a game where every single pass is accurate and fast. Yeah, as you say, made some poor errors at the start and made some good plays also. He also turned the ball over a few times. Overall, a mixed bag in my mind.

You’re 100% deadset wrong. I know this because I went back and watched him. Guarantee you didn’t. My post above to Fionn is what actually happened. Which makes you a prime example of a person who just makes stuff up to suit your purposes.

He knocked the ball on in the first couple of minutes. Kicked one dead when the idea was good but it got a roll on. And missed one open field tackle. That’s it for mistakes. Not a single one of his passes went behind the man, every single one was accurate and fast. I defy you to show me a pass behind the man. And that with s new fly half who was struggling for positioning. He also scored a try and set Simmons up. He recovered some loose balls on the ground. They’re the simple facts.

I’d say a 6. Hooper did get binned.

So you genuinely believe they’ve been the two worst players in every single game? Mmhmm.

I'll agree with that about stats in isolation being misleading, but the stats were reflective of what I saw. Middling match against a poor Japanese side. He made some terrible errors in the first half, fixed it up after then and no brain explorations, but his passes were, as usual, very quick but behind the man as often as in front. Biggest problem is that Cheika doesn't trust him, which is why Genia always plays so many minutes. And if Cheika doesn't him after 60+ Tests he never will.

@Reverse - You are a prime example of reversing your observation skills on Phipps. Who were you watching - the Japanese halfback or the All Blacks game ?? Phipps made several school boy errors again - passes to nowhere, fumbles, penalties conceded & missed tackles. It was one of his best games ever for the W's. I gave him a 2 :)

2 worst players voted AGAIN were Hanigan & Robertson. Same every game - all of 2017. Only reason Phipps did not make the worst 3 again is because he got no run on time. Sometimes you get lucky :)

He was on for 13 mins, 10 of which they were scrumming a man down.

I’m basing it on actually watching him. Sick of people trotting out stats as if they prove something. I can find a stat to prove whatever point I want to make, stats aren’t neutral.

Based on his turnovers and tackles according to the analaysis on GAGR he did not have a strong game. I think he had an adequate one. A 6 or so would have been reflective.

Good post jeznez. You are regularly one of the more reasonable voices on these boards.

Brett, interesting tho that 1/3rd of punters pick the same rating for SK and TK (6) and yet there is a whole point difference in their averages (5.33 and 6.33, respectively). Reflects what I saw in the posts: considerable divergence on their relative contributions. The “haters” went for SK, this time.

We judges should deduct a point for each semi-justified penalty. Simmons for that off-the-ruck clean-out early on. Hanigan got one for not rolling away. Sio pinged in 2 scrums, whether or not it was his fault. Coleman a couple, Hooper a couple plus the YC. I thought the team played okay so started with 6s all round, 8s for TPN & Genia. Most of the pack had their 6s downgraded due to indiscretions. No real reason to downgrade Robertson, say. Not defending him, but I'm sure he'd scrum better next to TPN.

In the end, we’re all susceptible to confirmation bias. We expect someone to be of a certain standard (good or bad) and every time they do something in line with that expectation we take it as proof of our view, and we subconsciously filter out the stuff that doesn’t align. Prime example was Phipps last week, who I specifically went back and re-watched. He has a very strong game, yet he got a 4.something on the roar.

Gee whiz there is an anti Simmons smell in the air. I though he played well enough to get a 7. He is not a star player like Hooper or Coleman...he's one of those honest hard working forwards that continually does the hard yards with little attention. Even Kerevi rated higher. Outside the one try (luck) what did Beale do all game. He continually falls off tackles. He is not safe under the high ball.
