Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne Victory: A-League live scores, blog

The Newcastle Jets return home, after their first loss of the season, to host a Melbourne Victory coming off their first win of the season. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:50pm (AEDT).

They say a week is a long time in football. For Newcastle, it’s an eternity.

A week ago, they were unbeaten and top of the league. Tonight, they come in on the back of their first loss, and missing the league’s leading goal scorer, Roy O’Donovan, as well as their first-choice goalkeeper, Jack Duncan.

In the words of a famous newsreader: Boy, that escalated quickly.

Funnily enough, Newcastle were somewhat unlucky against Sydney last week. Yes, the Sky Blues should have put the game away in the first half, but they didn’t, and if not for Duncan’s slippery hands in horrible conditions, we may well be talking about the still-undefeated Jets coming off a hard-fought draw against the reigning premiers and champions.

As for O’Donovan, he is a huge, near irreplaceable loss, however the Jets showed last week that they still have firepower, and Dimi Petratos appears to be really enjoying the responsibility and limelight that comes with holding the wand in the middle of the park.

Melbourne, on the other hand, will travel north with the wind in their sails and confidence in their hearts after a well-deserved victory against a struggling Perth kick-started their campaign.

However, teams historically struggle to back up on another road trip after playing in Perth the week before, and the loss of Mitch Austin to a season-ending injury is a tragedy and extremely bad luck for the youngster. Offsetting this for Melbourne is having Besart Berisha back, as proven last week, while the return Kosta Barbarouses is another big plus.

The Victory, including FFA Cup fixtures, are unbeaten in their last six against the Jets, but the latter have a horrid record against most teams these days, and this is very much a new team.

Prediction
Newcastle will have to show what they’re made of, and prove that the first seven rounds have not been a fluke. Any team can poach results unexpectedly, but the true quality sides perform when the expectation sits on their shoulders.

This is a new Newcastle, and at home, they should be driven to get the chocolates.

Newcastle 3-1.

Having just watched the replay (the first time ever), I was even more impressed by the closing down. Phenomenal. We looked electric, and Victory pedestrian. Great days! Depth remains the issue. Every time a key player goes down you hold your breath

Muscat's lost control of the dressing room. Meanwhile Ernie is laying back enjoying another Chivas Regal during the halftime break. He does love his whiskey.

Ballboys on tenderhooks fearful of the Muscat tackle.

Victory very poor and indisciplined this season, after nearly winning the Grand Final last season. Muscat no show for the Footballroos manager job.

I think so. They lack speed, and creativity. Their squad looks weak and unbalanced. Bizzarely they have no left back, but allowed Georgevski to leave! They have many defensive midfielders, but only one attacking midfielder, and he(Troisi) looks a busted flush. Surely Petratos will replace him in the new manager's national squad? I still maintain that Berisha is on the decline, not held by the lack of creativity. Barbarousas, goal aside isn't the player of previous seasons yet, and they have no backup in wide areas. Ingham is NPL quality at best.

With a new manager the field for Footballroos selection is wide open. Exciting times ahead.

Fadida if there is one thing that you could say of both players over time is that they needed to be consistent to go to the next level. Troisi had the perfect opportunity to put a stamp on the game but was outshone by Petratos. Petratos so far seems to be enjoying his time at the Jets. If he can avoid the temptation to fly off to the first overseas offer he is likely to get and gives a few years of good performance to this team, he could well find himself in the NT long before then, assuming the new coach is sympathetic ;-) Hearing things tonight from the Victory bench I have to agree with you - Muscat wants his players 'in there', blows up and complains vehemently at every foul against him (and it is him - I think he always going to be that player that still is on the pitch riding every move, even when he's on the bech), and when Georgievski kicked the ball out due to the obvious injury, Muscat was "Bes! Bes! Throw the ball in! Go on! Come on he's faking it!'. Recruiting could be right. Williams is no longer in the frame for the NT, Troisi just isn't consistent enough for long enough, and they are missing a good creative influence in midfield that has perhaps been a hallmark of Victory teams in the past. Still shouldn't take away from Newcastle the win and how they are playing. Have an agressive, non-stop attack is one of the things the fans have been asking for many seasons. Jones in particular and even van Egmond at times wanted to sit on a 1-0 or 2-1 lead, even when an obvious break was there. Miller who? We are no longer drawing games we could have won, or finding it hard to get back into games when a goal down (although we still need to stop those early goals). We could go over the top and say we are like sharks smelling blood in the water - always looking for the next goal. Going for the jugular is right.

Very impressed that the Jets went for the jugular. Even before the send off I thought we were well on top.. Victory? Poor recruiting, bunch of bad sports, built in their coach's image. Oh, and fancy letting Georgevski go! Troisi, the more bald he gets the worse he plays. Petratos is now a far superiorr player

Agree. I’m thinking that if he keeps developing over this season and into the next then maybe could come into the squad for the next Asian Cup and see how he shapes up. I’m impressed how he’s come on.

I agree. Thomas made some brilliant saves when victory had 11 on the field . Jets were completely dominating before Milligan red

It usually is unfortunately. Upper Eastern hasn't been open for years now. I was tipping (hoping) for a 10k crowd but 8.5k probably not the best. I'm not sure the supercars has much to do with it. Maybe 7:50pm kick-off is a bit late...maybe not a good time like an 5pm-ish kick off Saturday.

My phone battery was going flat - sorry for not responding. I don't know, I was interested in finding out. Three green lights on the screen so I assume that meant the decision was upheld as Milligan made a bee line for the shower.

Just thinking on the way home how much the Jets pressed in numbers right to the end. Even down to 10 men, Victory's defence and midfield were at times pedestrian tonight in comparison. This wasn't due to the loss of a player, as Victory were more or less playing a 4-4-1 in defence with only an attacking player absent. Early I thought we were just hanging back but we soon snapped out of it otherwise Merrick would have given them a torrid time in the sheds. I think we are just passing well in midfield, and given some space helps that, and we are just not happy with a 2-1 lead as we may have been in the past. This team is not happy to not be scoring. Still a niggly game. I am amazed at the pre-game stat that Victory win the most fouls as they don't hold back. Still the Jets with a few silly yellows tonight that I think they need to stamp out, and is going to cost use a player or two for a game a little later on. Newcastle should be happy with the way this season is progressing. Bring on Melbourne City.
