The 2018 season will be pivotal for the Bulldogs board

By Steve Doggies / Roar Rookie

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs annual general meeting (AGM) is being held on 11 February, and this year is an election year.

The past 15 years have been interesting times at the Bulldogs both on and off the field, but this election looms as perhaps the most important moment in the club’s history.

On the surface the current board, spearheaded by Ray Dib, is in for a heck of a fight to retain control. His team will come head to head with some pretty impressive opponents headed by Lynne Anderson, daughter of Peter Bullfrog Moore and current CEO of the Australian Paralympic Committee; Chris Anderson, ex-Bulldog player and coach; and Bulldogs legend Steve Price.

Much has been written about poor decisions made by the front office over the last 12 months and the Dogs, a club used to success, have reacted. But is it too little too late for Dib? Will the membership continue to support his one-man band style leadership or will they attempt the trifecta of a new coach, new CEO and new board?

The time is right for change.

The decisions made over the last 12 to 18 months have cost the club another captain, the player who epitomised the club ethos, Josh Reynolds, and they will likely cost the club financially when legal proceedings are concluded over the coaching mess.

But it’s unlikely, however, things will be so clear-cut on the day of the vote.

Between 3000 and 4000 members generally attend the AGM, and that number will likely swell to up to 6000 for this election. That leaves a rough estimate of as many as 4000 members who either will not vote or will provide a proxy vote. It is those members who will determine the final result.

Generally the proxy will vest in the chairman, but what will Dib do? He could retain all of the proxies for himself and thereby guarantee his retention on the board – or will he distribute the proxies among his own ticket and try to get them all over the line and guarantee his continuity in the top job? Either option is a big gamble, and based on his track record, he doesn’t mind rolling the dice.

No matter what happens on the day, the members are in for a long wait before the make-up of the incoming board is known.

The lobbying by the various factions over the next month will only add to the theatre. I look forward to it.

You mentioned there are 900 members at Canterbury. I am a South Sydney football club member. One decision I made was to vote yes in 2006 to privatise the club. By being a member you have a say in holding the club accountable. I encourage everyone to join their football club as members

Fox has Milford topping the errors so don't be too precious about errors. Two groups have slightly different figures but it is clear that Milford makes a huge number of errors and is an ineffective tackler. He is a fantastic attacking player and can be a match winner just like Tom T. If you are going to be harsh then apply the same harshness to your own team and then you will have some credibility. You say two Manly legends have had mediocre careers and you expect to be taken seriously ? You still can't name all these Manly players who have done better after leaving the club and my original point still remains. That's all from me you can argue with yourself for all I care. You'd be better off arguing with Fox and their stats department. Stephen Mortimer , you have a fair point but my post related to Foran and the chance of him being successful and therefore the Dogs having a good season. He will need to defy a very clear trend of ex Manly players failing at other clubs. This adds a level of intrigue to the season. If another poster wants to challenge my thoughts then I'm happy to oblige. I stand by my initial post.

Deflecting much Greg? I'm not the one banging on about the Broncos champ but you're 100% wrong about Milford, Tom T tops the list of errors and Api tops the Missed Tackles (Walker 3rd) in 2017. Don't make up your own numbers, they are there for all to see. https://www.nrl.com/stats/ Now let's go back to the start "a select group with one member only in recent years, JWH at the Roosters. Players who have left Manly and have played really well and not been injured" You are wrong, plenty of Ex Manly players have had far better careers after they left. This isn't about the Broncos, you wrote another factually wrong opinion now diverting on with all sorts of tangents but I will keep bring you back to the point if you want to keep arguing. You've lost again, move on.

Milford is actually 1st for mistakes in 2017 with 42 and has a tackle efficiency of 71% compared to DCE with 85.6% and Api 85%. DCE churchill medalist and title winner, Api title winner ....... Milford wins title for most mistakes in 2017. Maybe you need to look at the Broncos problems before other teams. Could be a long wait for another title.

What sort of fool cares about winning % when the only aim is to win titles. Snake and Matai won 2 titles in the last decade and the Brisbane Broncos have won exactly nothing in that time. Name all these Manly players who have done better after leaving Manly in the NRL. If you don't factor in injuries you are in dream land. Gutherson would be a candidate but he was injured. If I wish to include that in my list then I will , I don't need your advice. Watmough , Stewart and Buher are other players who were wisely let go along with Brent Kite. Injuries are always a factor in whether a player is a successful signing or not , it doesn't matter what you think , that's the reality.

Hahaha, you're losing! Parker, Petro, Locky, Hodges, Boyd. All long serving State and Aust reps, unlike your boys (not even bozo thinks he has NSW best), but I'm not the one making broad statements about my team based on opinion not fact. Plenty of ex Manly players have gone onto better careers after leaving and that's a fact. You need to point to 2-3 specific years and include injury to try prove an invalid point. Lastly, I don't know you just the BS you write (including Missed tackles, Manly have 2/5, do you really think that helps your argument?) My point about the winning % is that it's a pass mark at best = mediocre and to you that is outstanding. Low bar set.

Blair didn't play in a winning GF team. So what if he got a medal. Winning % of players in a team I follow has nothing to do with whether my life is mediocre or not. Snake and Matai played in 4 Grand finals each and won two. Name a Bronco player from the same era who can match that record. The top five players for missed tackles in 2017 all have won titles and one of them two titles . The only exception is the Broncos player but you don't need to panic he still has a slight chance before he retires. Hopoate had 1 great year in his career and that was at Manly . He has been pedestrian ever since and no one at Manly wishes we kept Hopoate but everyone is glad we have Tom T. You may think otherwise but it isn't offensive it's just comical.

Wow, and I twist words. I specifically said Hoppa's post manly career over Tom's past 2 years, you know, his whole career! Blair played the GF last year! BTW, Career winning stats for King: 52%, Matai and Stewart: 62%. If that's highly successful you must enjoy a mediocre life.

9 out of 10 punters would take Hoppa over Tom T over the last 2 years is the funniest thing I've read for a long time. You play around with words a lot Nat and twist and turn but my point is still 100 % valid , very few players do well after leaving Manly. It's just a fact. King , Snake and Matai won titles at Manly and actually played in the GF so all were highly successful.

Your summation is a little self serving Greg. You're happy to go back as far as Rowdy to JWH to make a point but only 1yr back in acknowledging players who have left your team. 9/10 punters would take Hoppa and his career post Manly over what Turbo has produced in the last 2 as evidenced by his rep career and involvement in teams that have finished significantly higher than Manly over "recent years". Blair may have bit part at Manly, as was JWH, but was a Grand finalist last year and premiership player this year. Scott's "potential" is based on half a season games in a very dominant Storm team. Vunivalu is (arguably) the best winger in the game yet had 5 tries put on him when playing for Fiji against Smith, Cronk, Slater and Co. My point, Scott is being developed but Blair was bought for his talent that was never realised at Manly. As Beastie points out Gutho is a far better player now then at Manly. Most players have injuries. If Jason King, Snake, Matai or Choc were payed by the minute, they would starve. Doesn't reflect their on-field performance just highlights it's a long bow to draw to discount others for injuries when their quality is there to see on the field.

Beastie , Clint Gutherson was injured. Nat , if I don't include JWH then the club has no members. Hoppa scored 2 tries in 2017, 8 try assists and wait for it .... Made 1 line break. Turbo scored 11 tries , had 17 try assists and .... 21 line breaks. Turbo averaged more metres and made more mistakes. Turbo and Hoppa are equal but Turbo makes more mistakes? Blair is a fringe 1st grader and Scott is a potential SOO player. Rose and Myles highlight my point actually. Melbourne are the best recruiters around but failed with those two which is consistent with clubs buying Manly players, it almost never works out.

I'll start be acknowledging the effort Manly put in last year to make the finals (as I did last year). Your last paragraph highlights my point re: Myles and Rose, both had good careers. Granted it was toward the end when they arrived at Manly but they left in worse condition than they arrived. "Recent years" doesn't go back as far as Rowdy does it? I thought it was a stretch to include JWH, seeing as he played 6 games for Manly in 09 and really only came to league because the Warritahs offered part-time contact. You're a hard marker on Cheyse Blair though. In the games he played, especially 2016 after leaving Manly, had better attacking and far better defending stats then Walker who did go on to play SoO. That's all pre finals stats too be it fair. Young Curtis Scott is a talent but only got his shot due to Blair's injury so It will be interesting to see what Bellamy does this year. It's unfair to highlight Green/Blair in that GF loss. Do you blame the entire Storm pack for Barba's try or Chambers for going in when Cronk was unmarked on the outside for the win? Lane and Sironen averaged a combined 72m p/g in 2017 (69 & 74 respectively) which is no better then their years previous so making Manly top 17 is more lack of depth then improved ability and leaves Jurbo and Taupau covering for them. I think both Turbo bros have tremendous talent but there is good reason Jake has shot well above Tom. Like L. Mitchell, he can score a freaky try but too many mistakes and missed tackles is a massive liability for your starting FB. 1st in NRL 17, and 3rd in 16. The same applies with Walker/Api, their best attackers are the worst defenders and/or make the most mistakes in the league - not just the team.. If you're happy with that, 6th spot is an achievement. Hoppa and T/Rex have both been to GFs and NSW, Tonga reps as well since leaving Manly. TRex has fallen away of late but Hoppa's attacking stats are equal to Tom's (without the errors) in a very poor Bulldogs season.

The club is now fortunate to have Andrew Hill as CEO and he will be a major factor in the Bulldogs climb to the top again. It would be interesting to know who/whom was responsible for extending the contracts of Hasler and Castle and the payout figures involved notwithstanding that the court case pending may be used as a convenient excuse to deny explanation. That may be pivotal in Messrs Dib and Co retaining office.
