Pendlebury re-elected Collingwood captain

By News / Wire

Scott Pendlebury will captain Collingwood for a fifth-straight season after the star AFL midfielder was re-elected to the position.

The 30-year-old, who took over the role from premiership winner Nick Maxwell in 2014, will again be deputised by Steele Sidebottom.

Taylor Adams, Lynden Dunn and Jeremy Howe make up the rest of the leadership group.

Injury-prone forward Jamie Elliott was selected in an emerging leaders group, alongside Brodie Grundy, Brayden Maynard, Darcy Moore, Tom Langdon and Adam Treloar.

“As we mature as a group, more players are willing to drive the behaviours that we are about as a side,” Pendlebury said.

“The football program places a lot of trust in the individual and it’s up to us to display all the right behaviours and drive the standards behind closed doors to give us the best shot come match day.”

Pendlebury is one of those great players I love to watch and a true champion of the game. One of those rare gifted players who never seem to be flustered and never seems to hurry. A player of his ability and football smarts together with his leadership on the field, even when he slows up, will still exceed that of many other players and I believe will still have great value in another position.

I hope he doersn't overstay his welcome and uses his skills intelligently on the flank or in the forward line. He is no defender, nor will he ever become one. The heirarchy should stick to the basics of football. Ratbags to the backiline! He is not a ratbag......

Gary Ablett's performances not up to scratch? Even with Abletts outs last year I think you would find his stats compare favourably with Pendlebury. Even though he played in a team that was second last and where he was given a lot of "attention" from opposition players . If he stays relatively free of injury, something that is no guarantee for any player and playing alongside Duncan Selwood and Dangerfield it will be much harder for a team to put as much concentration into tagging Ablett with such a talented midfield. IMO Ablett will show why he is a one of the greats of the game.

Congratulations to Scott Pendlebury for his achievements at the Collingwood Football Club. He has equalled Len Thompson's five Copeland Trophies and is one behind his coach. He is a fine ornament to the game and I feel he will not hang around if his performances aren't up to scratch. He will not do a Gary Ablett Junior. I would like to see him up forward and rotating with Daniel Wells on a flank and less reliance should be placed on him as he gets older. The great Kevin Bartlett extended his football career by playing in that position instead of being on the ball. Now, the issue that is of concern to all us loyal Maggies is who will be his heir apparent? Stephenson? Treloar? Adams? Sidebottom? There is a need for a real star in the middle and that is the pressing need for our great club. Who will be our next engine room tyro?
