New Reds signing to provide fullback cover for Hunt

I wanted to get behind Toua, I really did. But I'm convinced now that he brought more potential than anything else. Poor defender. Indecisive in space, especially kick returns, and would turn the ball over as a result. And his clearance kicks were off the side of the boot more than can be accepted from a professional player. He did chime in well as a third playmaker in 2016, and was almost the main playmaker last year so appreciate him putting up his hand there when needed, but just made way too many mistakes.

At least Mogg's kick returns regularly got back into opposition territory, even down into the 22. Toua clearly has a 50m+ left boot but slices it 90% of the time.

I don't understand Thorn or the Reds recruiting the last three players, so late in the day... and just refusing Quade again and again.

I saw him pin Folau back on the line by about 30 metres Son the sideline with one kick, Izzy only made about 5 metres in return. He will need to make sure he can do that consistently, but if he can pull it off the left boot is invaluable.

Will admit up front that I was not happy when the Reds let Lucas go...but the last minute signings (Lucas, Lance, Toua) seem a sign of desperation by the Reds. Toua is a fine ball runner but is so fragile under the high ball and in defence....he sure can't cover Hunt for defence! They are are doing anything possible to ensure they won't need to call on QC...but none of these three are better at game management then QC, and that is apparently one of the key reasons Thorn won't use him...

Yep, that was my issue with him at the Brumbies. Too often his 'exits' went from inside the 22 to barely outside the 22. As an attacking threat he is very good though.

i thought his main problem was - something common to many auzzy backs like Folau , cannot kick well from 15. if u saw England v Wales - at least one wing on either side are very good line kickers in addition to 15. ( Adams and Watson). granted everyone cant kick 50m like Dagg or Steyn or Hodge , but decent exit kiking is a must for the back.

Hawera was the weakest link at the Brumbies last year, he is a club rugby playing at a level that is well beyond his abilities. Toua did a lot of the playmaking for him but didn’t get any credit for that.

In 2016 Toua set up nine tries for the Brumbies and scored two more, I’d say that makes him a pretty serious attacking threat. And in 2017 Larkham was often using him as first receiver of the lineout, probably because Hawera and Godwin were so mediocre as playmakers, which would explain why we didn’t see as much from him scoring in the wide channels, where a fullback would normally be. Toua’s main problem was his defence in 2016, which was terrible, but he improved it a lot in 2017. I reckon a few naysayers will be surprised at how well he does with the Reds.

Agreed. A very flakey player who has great attaching instincts but is just not big, strong or fast enough to be a serious attacking threat He and CFS were talked up big time as potential stars and both have been complete flops. CFS is the worst IMO. He seems so lazy and disinterested when he plays - a terrible example of the Reds’ crumbled culture

Easily the weakest player from the Brumbies. Reminded me of a Jesse Mogg on return options: Kick first, kick second, maybe run it. Defence was shotty most of the times and now the Reds have picked him up haha. I can't see him starting any game this year.

Good buy, a genuine playmaking fullback with a left boot. Underrated and under appreciated which is good, because he will have s point to prove.

The Reds style of Rugby may suit him more as well. Although, I suppose we can't make assumptions about how McKellar will want to have the Brumbies playing in the long term.

Good signing I think. I was very happy when the Brumbies promoted Banks to starting fullback as Toua's kicking put us under a lot of pressure at times, but I wasn't happy to see him go as I think he brings a lot to the squad. He is an electric attacker and is very good injury cover who can play multiple positions proficiently.

Absolutely mediocre approach to recruitment to pick up Toua. He was let go for a reason and hasn’t shown to be superior to when he left.

Hunt , Cooper the aru might as well throw all their dough down the pokies. they will probably get extended contracts as the aru just love throwing the money around in so called elite backs. Slipper when is he going to produce something. His wallaby days are finished and is just someone who stays on the books. Kerevi needs to get some speed and Higgers might shine and stop seagulling under the great Thorne.
