Scotland great Scott Hastings has branded fans who directed verbal and physical abuse at England rugby coach Eddie Jones as “scum of the earth” who should be named and shamed.
Ex-Wallaby mentor Jones revealed on Wednesday he feared for his safety while catching a train from Edinburgh to Manchester on the morning after England’s Calcutta Cup defeat at Murrayfield.
The Australian travelled alone via standard class to be a guest of Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, before receiving similar treatment at the hands of football fans on the final leg of his journey from Manchester to London.
Video footage shot in Manchester and obtained by the BBC’s Dan Roan shows Jones posing for selfies with Scotland supporters, who then turn on him. One calls him a “baldy ****” as he is ushered into a car.
Following a separate incident, British Transport Police are investigating a report of verbal abuse against Jones after officers were sent to meet his train as it arrived into London Euston on Sunday evening.
“It’s terrible, absolutely ridiculous,” Hastings told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I think a lot of Scotland rugby fans and former internationals just can’t believe this thing happens in this day and age.”
Speaking on Wednesday, Jones cited comments made by Hastings’ brother, Gavin, who said in the build-up to the game that “you just want to rub (Jones’) face in the dirt” as a possible reason behind the abuse.
“I’m not aware of what Gavin said, but these gentlemen, if you can even call them gentlemen, they should be named and shamed,” Scott Hastings added.
“It is very unfair on Eddie Jones. He had a few boos after the game but I understand when they went to the after-match function they were very magnanimous and respectful. Unfortunately there are some unruly people who are scum of the earth.
“I have to get my point across. These people should be named, shamed and brought to the attention of the police.”
Scottish Rugby offered strong condemnation upon seeing the footage which has been widely circulated on social media, while former British and Irish Lion John Beattie has apologised to Jones, tweeting “so sorry”.
“Scottish Rugby is appalled by the verbal abuse suffered by Eddie Jones,” a statement read
“The disgusting behaviour of those involved does not represent the values of our sport or its fans.
“The dignity Eddie and the England team showed on Saturday is in stark contrast to this ugly incident.”
Jones has resolved not to use public transport again following the experience and is frustrated given his willingness to engage with supporters.
“I’m a human being. I don’t consider myself any different from anyone else, so for me to travel on public transport I thought was OK. But I’ll make sure I won’t in future. It’s as simple as that,” Jones said on Wednesday.

You're right. That's a perfect way of legitimising bad behaviour—we shouldn't criticise bad because there is worse behaviour somewhere else in our world of over 7 billion people. Genius. Also, it is 'know', not 'no'.

Only if you jump to the conclusion he's talking about a nation and not those Scots in the clip demonstrating classic mob mentality behaviour.

Piru, What then do you call a group of young men picking on a 1.6m balding middle aged man minding his own business?? Are they your kind of heros/bravadoes? I can bet my bottom dollar that if you were to confront any of these cowards alone...they will run crying to dear mamas.

These meatheads are most likely cowards who wouldn’t do what they did if their target was somebody like Brad Thorn instead of a short, 58 year old man. I actually feel sorry for the rest of Scotland for being associated with that sort of behaviour, but every country has its clowns so it shouldn’t be taken to reflect on the rest of the city country.

Malo! Eddie the mouth has annoyed the hell out of a lot of people with his outspoken remarks over the years, particularly when he blows his own team up and when that team gets shown up for what it's not in Eddie the Mouths view, he's going to get it back. He could be better understood if he was a top Coach, but he's not and has bluffed his way around for years, so with the'thrashing'' his Team got by the Jocks the other day, and it was a thrashing in every aspect of rugby being played the right way or the wrong way~ the Poms used their much vaunted method of kicking over the top by any one of three backline players didn't work as all that achieved was putting the ball straight into old Jocks breadbasket, it's a ploy copied from the All Blacks with the only difference being, the Kiwis know what they're doing whereas the Poms are still in a learning phase. And how could you not enjoy those set pieces with the Poms being demolished in most cases, and what about the pushing back on numerous occasions of the ''best scrum on the planet'' by the Jocks, as Eddie the Mouth spruiks them up to be! Stiff bikkies Eddie old son but, you deserved it!

Disgusting behaviour by louts who I’m ashamed to call countrymen and who on earth are the weirdos here who seem to think it was just hijinks? It wasn’t, I don’t like Jones much because of his big mouth but he doesn’t deserve to be manhandled by drunkards who I hope aren’t rugby supporters.

Fairly common in football in the uk but hate to see this in rugby, those idiots don't represent Scottish rugby anymore than mel Gibson represents an accurate portrayal of history. Not sure how much it is to blame but using words like 'hate' to describe an opposing international rugby team in the build up is as stupid and it is needless, if you 'hate' someone, you don't play rugby against them, you try to kill them.

“I can see you’ve all decided to be offended” Zero need for the patronising comment. If you remain unmoved by the footage - no issue. But don’t decide that your values should be universal or that the threat Eddie Jones felt at that moment should be trivialised. What I saw was an international rugby coach - who remains humble enough to jump on public transport like 9 to 5 Average Joe Pleb - stopping willingly to accomodate a photo request from opposition rugby fans, before then - strangely - enduring an aggressive verbal, bordering physical (certainly personally) abusive tirade that extended beyond the street corner and into the confines of his waiting car. Who are we - from the comfort of our easy chairs - to decide what level of threat Eddie Jones felt in real time 3D HD? What level of physical threat is acceptable to you? Why should Jones feel any threat at all? Was it deserved because of his abrasive, disrespectful pre-and-post match comments towards Scotland, (and were these illusive comments squirrelled away masterfully in the microdot punctuating an “i” of some random word within a throwaway sentence containing the text “Scotland were simply better today”)? If booze is now a valid excuse, I hope these gentlemen were muntered. Because if they weren’t, they are unmitigated muppets. Either way, they don’t deserve your defence. And I’m not 100% sure why you’re offering it.

@Piru It's pretty tame stuff, really That is just first course in a full meal of sledging in Joburg or CT. I think it could even be considered a bit polite in the Boland.

I agree - real amusing for several blokes to give it to a much older, smaller fellow flying solo without engaging their brains. Were it not for dedicated rugby disciples such as Eddie Jones they wouldn't get to enjoy the game quite as well. Clearly they have no respect for it. They would be whistling a quieter tune if they had encountered Eddie Jones when he was young and many times stronger than them. He played for about a decade in one of the most physically able, unforgiving and intimidating packs in the history of the local game. The likes of Tim Kava, John Maxwell, Warwick Waugh, Poedevin, Cheika, Murray and McKenzie would not have broken stride to swat these brave lads aside. They'd have done it without a word being uttered too - they were all big, quiet blokes apart from Cheika, who never shut up, but then he had the capability, preparedness and ticker to back that up.
