Ablett aiming to ramp up training

By News / Wire

Geelong star Gary Ablett plans to ramp up his training later this week as he tries to prove his readiness for the start of the AFL season.

As the Cats await word on Patrick Dangerfield’s hamstring injury, Ablett looks more likely to be ready for their March 25 opener against Melbourne.

By then it will be just on a month since Ablett tweaked a hamstring at training and a scan showed a strain.

“I’m hoping to join in (full training) at the end of this week, if not early next week, and just really looking forward to jumping into it,” Ablett said on Monday.

Excitement is high at Geelong about Ablett’s return and his addition to their midfield alongside Dangerfield and captain Joel Selwood.

But Dangerfield hurt a hamstring in Sunday’s pre-season loss to Essendon and the 2016 Brownlow Medallist says it is the first time the he has suffered the injury.

The public holiday means Geelong must wait until Tuesday for Dangerfield to have scans and know the full extent of the injury.

“It feels pretty good,” Dangerfield said at Geelong’s headquarters on Monday.

“I’ve never done a hammy before, so without having done one, it’s hard to say where it’s at.”

Dangerfield was not worried about his setback.

“It’s not ideal – that being said, there are far more people in worse situations than I am,” Dangerfield said.

“You need a little bit of perspective I think.”

Lachie Henderson (knee) and Scott Selwood (ankle) are still recovering, while Rhys Stanley also hurt a calf in the Essendon loss.

All this assumes Harry is not a fictional character.

Haha classic. Come on big unit Harry back yourself bloke. I kinda like your posts and now your being challenged you have to man up. Ps I would be happy to take 1k off ya if gaz plays less than 9 games and I reckon there would be plenty of others also. If you are that certain about Garry's 8 games this season you could really clean up.

I didn't see this article until now. Yes, Harry expressed that he was quite the businessman with copious amounts of wealth. As such, I was happy to make a sizeable bet with him. I offered again on Josh's thread today, but still no answer. If Harry is reading, I'm willing to drop this amount to $1k if it's more palatable. However, this is why you're not going to make this bet: 1. You would be gambling; and 2. The odds are not in your favour Your writing style doesn't strike me as someone educated. Now, of course, this doesn't mean you couldn't afford to lose $1000, but statistically, it's less likely someone with a poor education would have a spare $1000 to gamble. You're also gambling against the Cats medical staff that don't hold your view. Furthermore, as a physiotherapist, and now a 5th-year medical student, I'll inform you: hamstring injuries, in the AFL, result in an average of four missed games per injury, with an average recurrence rate of 23%. Now Ablett being in his mid-thirties, along with having a history of HS injuries, would increase the chances of injury. To what level?, well that's mere speculation and something I'm willing to bet with you on. Understand this though: There are 23 H&A matches, plus another 2-3 games the Cats are likely to play in come finals. That's 25 matches. All he needs to do is play in 9 of those for me to win such a bet. As I said, the odds are not in your favour. I wouldn't be gambling either — losing $1000 would not bother me in the slightest. Cats' bet sounds interesting though.

Yeah, you're right. Rick did suggest the 10k bet. It was Harry who put on the song and dance performance expressing frustration at not being allowed to accept. But I'd suggest Rick saw that coming. Geez if he really wanted to there are bookies out there who would offer better than evens on that one. Just Harry trying to be relevant. Your avatar idea is a reasonable proposal, how could he refuse? Not sure what the rules are but I bet there'd be some awesome, and appropriate, ideas out there. Would you actually take the bet? And Harry, would you? Though I'd be keen for Gazza to play the first 9 games to maximise HTH's limited remaining time on the roar!

I think that was Rick that wanted the 10k bet. Fake news made excuses about who would hold the money. I'd do the tried and true 'forum bet' that has been done and used on countless forums for years. If Ablett plays 8 games or less, I will display an avatar of your choosing (from the date it becomes mathematically impossible for him to play 8 games or more until the first H&A match of season 2019 is played). If Ablett plays 9 or more games Fake news has to display an avatar of my choosing (starting immediately after he plays his 9th game until the first H&A match of 2019). Avatars must conform to the roars rules.

Maybe your bet could involve something other than money. Your 10k offer was preposterous, a look at me grab for attention. No surprise the mods knocked that on the head and so they should.
