I wasn't happy with incident: Selwood

By News / Wire

Joel Selwood concedes he was left aggrieved following an incident with Hawthorn’s James Sicily during an AFL Easter Monday classic.

The Geelong captain was caught in a tangle with Sicily in the final quarter of the Hawks’ thrilling one-point win at the MCG.

Footage of the Hawk appearing to knee Selwood in the head is certain to be looked at by the AFL’s match review officer Michael Christian on Tuesday.

Selwood played a straight bat to questions asked on the Seven Network on Monday night, but remembers not being “happy” about it at the time.

“Those games, they bring out huge emotions. I obviously wasn’t happy at the time with the incident, but it is what it is,” Selwood told Talking Footy.

“He probably picked the wrong bloke to do it to too, because I don’t react too well to a lot of things like that.

“It happened quick to be honest. I’m fine tonight. I’m not, hopefully, going to say anything silly. It’s just one of those footy incidents.”

The pair spoke after the game and ended up shaking hands, with Selwood starting the conversation.

But the three-time Geelong best-and-fairest winner didn’t reveal what was exchanged with Sicily post-game, saying he couldn’t remember.

“It was a hell of a game and who knows what was said at the end of it all,” Selwood said.

85kg of force my ass, all he did was do the knee equivalent of rubbing someone’s head with your knuckles. If Sicily has really wanted to hurt him Selwood wouldn’t have finished the game, instead all he got was “Oi don’t trip me you grub” in knee form.

Sicily is easy to provoke and no Luke Hodge, he’ll be targeted and set up by top shelf britches players like Selwood, who also remonstrated with him after the game, effectively sealing his fate. Selwood knew exactly what he was doing, grabbing his legs, pulling down and preventing him from getting to the next contest. Guessing Clarko tore a few strips off him for an average game and gifting Geelong a goal courtesy of an ill disciplined 50, he’ll have to put a lid on it or get used to watching from the stands. Tom Mitchell & Patrick Dangerfield, poetry in motion, cracking game of footy, Hawks are back.

Poppy is like 168cm and almost as wide, one of the shortest blokes in the league, most of the AFLW tower over him, not hard to go high on him.

He tried to put 85kg of force into Selwood's skull using his knee

It he had intent he would have opened up Selwood's head. The force was minimal and this rubbish about "potential to cause injury" is the biggest joke since Chamberlain and Pannell were allowed to umpire Geelong games.

Umps had a shocker both ways but Geelong got the better calls (and non-calls) which added a bit to their score.

I generally agree Brian but Poppy is really short which means he's more likely to cop head high contact.

Sicily was a dill...but there’s apparently a new rule that Dangerwoodlett are not allowed to be tackled...especially in the 4th quarter. The free kick count to Geelong in the 4th was appalling.

Sicily needs to channel his aggression better but no one could be feeling much sympathy for Duckwood who really does cheat his way to frees that arent there. In retirement he will only have a legacy with cats fans while being abhorred by the most of the footy world Loved the Collingwood Cheersquad tweet which compared one captain who beat cancer to the other one that ducks anytime someone comes near him.

Here's an idea - don't grab someone's ankles when they're trying to play on and you probably won't trip them so they fall on your head. Just a thought for Joel to consider in future.

Houli got 4 weeks last year for throwing a fist behind his body and collecting the guy in the head. Deliberately driving your knee into someone skull as they lie on the ground is far worse than throwing a punch. Potentially cause greater injury and a far worse look. Can't even do that in MMA. Absolute dog act to do that to someone on the ground. He has to get as many weeks as Houli at least. Whether or not Selwood got concussed isn't relavant. It's about intent. Sicily's intent was to inflict injury on Selwood's head using his knee.

"Sicily has to go for about 6 weeks for this". Only round 2 people, and we already have a contender for the most absurd comment of the season.

Selwood is not protected enough in the same way that the Kardashians aren't publicity hungry enough.

Yeah, tend to agree. Clearly a player who needs to play with that 'edge' in order to be effective.

Sicily has to go for about 6 weeks for this. As grubby as an act you'll see on the field. I don't think you can even drop a knee into someone's face in MMA. Doesn't change the fact the Duckwood is a ducker. He was rewarded several times for ducking yesterday. It's ridiculous that umpires fall for it every time.

This is all that needs to be said about this 'incident'.

Sicily has set himself up as a target to be provoked. So he will be,and unlike St. Joel,it will become ready, fire, aim in the post match review process if he is not careful. That may already be the case here with the instigator being Selwood grabbing his legs to impede his progress when his first instinct was obviously to get up and chase the ball. Pity;he's a talented player. It's something that Clarkson will have to address. As for Selwood-he is a protected species, whose 'non-comments" were unnecessary and provocative themselves. Amongst many cheap shots in recent years, has anyone forgotten the late, cocked elbow to the head from behind, smash his face into the turf shot on Sam Mitchell in his last year? It could have been very dangerous.Luckily it wasn't. Nothing to see here said St.Joel;it's just good hard footy. The match review panel agreed.

I don't think that Selwood is protected enough for off-the-ball incidents. When you look at the frees Sloane, Dangerfield and the like get. It seems to be open-Season on Selwood
