Match preview:

The Wetsern Sydney Wanderers will enter the last chance saloon when they host the Brisbane Roar on Saturday afternoon at Homebush. Join The Roar for live scores from 5:35pm (AEST).

This match comes with a very simple equation for Josep Gomabau’s men. Either win, or the dream of A-League finals is virtually gone.

As it stands, they are only two points outside of the top six, with the Roar the team currently holding that final spot for the finals series.

A win here and the Wanderers leapfrog the Roar with just a single game to play, showing exactly how important this home game is for both clubs.

A draw may be enough to keep them in contention for the top six with a round to go, but it’s far from a foregone conclusion and will depend on other results across this round and indeed next, as well as how Western Sydney play in the final week.

The Wanderers can control their own fate though. Their form line suggests it’s going to be tough to turn things around and make it happen though. They come in off two straight losses against the two Melbourne teams – 3-0 to City and 3-1 to the Victory.

With the Roar sitting right on the edge of the top six, the pressure will be on them to win and all but lock their spot up in the finals series.

Whether they can do it away from home is anyone’s guess, but their form is solid and they have played a brand of football relevant to their ladder position over the last month.

Their last two weeks have seen a 1-0 win over the Central Coast Mariners and a 2-all draw with the Wellington Phoenix, but it was the week before which showed exactly where they’re at. A win over Sydney FC is hard to come by at the best of times, and the Roar did exactly that, winning 2-1.

Prediction
The Wanderers simply must win, but their form line just doesn’t look good enough.

Being shelled two weeks in a row when their situation was slightly easier doesn’t make for good reading and with a Roar side also trying to qualify for the final six, this should be the end of the Western Sydney-based clubs season, although, a draw could also emerge from what should be a very tightly contested match.

Wanderers 1 – Roar 2.

All true. Without proper defenders we are very ordinary. A few goals against really does show up our ordinary attack up front, and a midfield that just doesn't have its act together. Pappa, DeVeere and North are sadly missed, and there's no one else to stand up. Brown must already have signed with Victory, such is his absence, and we haven't brought O'Toole or Ingham through. Just as we haven't brought any of our youngsters through this season, like Caletti or Akbari or Brady. Instead we've relied on imports like Gameiro and Oxborrow and Kalfallah who, in my opinion have not delivered. Much as Maccarone has not been marquee standard. The problem for Roar if Aloisi goes, who will replace him, and when? Personally, I'd be talking to Thomas Broich or at least have a plan to develop him as the future coach. I'd even prefer Mike Mulvey to JA.

Once Brisbane had an average starting XI age of 33 with Jack Hingert the youngest player (27). North should go. Too old. McKay should hang up his boots, too quiet and always 2nd best in midfield. Gamerio hasn't scored in 4 years. Maccarone sometimes buries the simplest of opportunities. Poor for a marquee, release him. FBK is too old and not effective enough. Holman's only played a few good games and I can't see him scoring a 2010 World Cup goal against Serbia.

This shows how bad an old squad can be at the end of the season. It was a total difference after switching channel to watch EPL. Fast and furious. Firing Mulvey was a mistake. The football was still good then. Hiring Aloisi was a mistake. Signing him for 3 years was a mistake.

Its always interesting to look at what helps shape an opinion and a general feeling. Last night WSW scored very early and added to the tally at regular intervals in the first half. The score at half time therefore allows a very positive spin on what a wonderful first half they produced and why couldn’t they play like that all the time? From a different perspective, Brisbane were as poor as you described and gave up so much space in midfield, they almost made the Baccus brothers look good and they are in the side only for pace, and enthusiasm, not midfielders blessed with great vision or being able to either read the game well,or spray the ball across the park (accurately). But that allowed Carrusca and Cejudo to use their skills and help set up the goals. Llorente was also let loose on a ponderous defence. Usually he is under pressure and hasn’t got the legs to deal with some of the young pacey attackers he comes up against so he must have relished the opportunity last night. Another night and the back four would have conceded a hatful. My overall conclusion remains that neither side should be entitled to play semi finals football. There again neither should Perth, top 4 only?

A truly dire performance from Brisbane Roar. It might make picking the players to retain so much easier. Mackay, FBK, Henrique, Maccarone, Franic and Gameiro should all be shown the door. Aloisi brothers should follow them. Brisbane were second sometimes third to the ball all through the game, they had no midfield, which put constant pressure on the defence, and the forwards were gifted chances by a poor Wanderers defence that they failed to convert. Aloisi's lack of tactical nous, poor player recruitment and non existent playing style is driving people away from the game. Brisbane Roar cannot afford to keep him. Although Holman put a bit more energy in when he came on he has only had about six good games all season with a lot of time injured so if the kept him he should be paid on a per game basis. There has to be a better way to run a football team than the way Brisbane are doing it.

Look, Buddy, I don't think the Wanderers were necessarily awful, but they're positioning was poor and they could have made it 5 or 6 against Brisbane. Their defense was a mess, disorganized and lazy, their attacks weren't effective.

Strange It may seem but I honestly thought Wanderers were pretty awful but Brisbane were dire. I know they scored three goals but I was watching poor marking, mis hit passes, passes that went anywhere and quite a few scoolboy errors. It seems that due to 3 goals being scored, the narrative has altered. Neither side should be anywhere near semi finals football.

Good Lord, this is awful stuff. Unless they can somehow find a way to make the six from here, I reckon Johnny's time has finally come. #AloisiOUT

Ikonomidis glides around the pitch doing some nice stuff. Like the header goal just now !!!!!!!!! 3:0 for WSW and season sort of over for Roar.

Macca looks like exactly what he is - a greybeard who should be out fishing, not playing football. Like me, in fact. But I'm wise enough to leave the football to younger blokes.

Wanderers have been the dominant side. Could be 2 or 3 up already.
