Chiefs vs Jaguares: Super Rugby live scores, blog

By Shakti Gounden / Roar Guru

After three successive wins on the road, the vastly-improved Jaguares of Argentina are looking to add a fourth in the form of the Chiefs to their tonight at Rotorua International Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 5:35pm AEST.

Coming from a bye, the Chiefs have made four changes to their line-up with the brilliant Brodie Retallick earning a well-deserved rest.

Michael Allardyce will be starting in his place with the veteran Liam Messam locking up No.8 in his hometown. Winger Toni Pulu also returns to the side after missing earlier clashes through injury.

Coach Colin Cooper will be relying on impressive Canadian Tyler Ardron for leadership, control and expansive rugby in the absence of Retallick.

Ardron has been phenomenal in the new role as a lock and will know that the Jaguares will be a tough proposition.

The Jaguares, having beaten the Brumbies, Rebels and the Blues in the last three weeks are now placed second in the South African conference.

Coach Mario Ledesma has also made five changes, most of which are tactically-based. Pumas captain Augustin Creevy has been pushed to the bench in place of Julian Montoya, who will start as hooker.

Lock Thomas Lavanini, scrum-half Gonzalo Bertranou, back Ramiro Moyano all return for the clash against the Chiefs.

Emiliano Boffeli has also scored nine tries in his last ten appearances for the Jaguares.

Ledesma will hope that the Jaguares set-pieces will stand-up to the Chiefs. The Chiefs are ranked second in both line-out and scrum wins as compared to 14th for the Jaguares.

Prediction
Not many teams have lost after coming from a bye this season and this may be the case for the Chiefs tonight. After a remarkable run away from home, the Jaguares will find it difficult against the Chiefs.

Chiefs by 14.

The Jaguares played well enough with a rush defence to win over the chiefs, however they are prodomently the Argentina national side with the next national coach in waiting.

The Jags defense is legit. Another thing that stands out is that have come from behind and won the second half four times in a row. That speak volumes about fitness and morale. The way the play now, It looks like only Hurricanes and Crusaders could live with them.

Sorry Kirky, I am on the other side of the fence here. But if you feel that the Chiefs were taken out of the game by the officials, well , welcome to our world. I cannot tell you how many times I felt that way following Jaguares, just last weekend the refs did not call a penalty try aginst the Blues after Jaguares went for the scrum like 5 times in a row and the Blues prop kept falling down so he would not go bakcwards and the ref kept telling the scrum half of Jaguares to use it or loose it. How many unfair yellow cards in my opinion and other well deserves ones over the last three years for Jaguares? I can go on and on but I think you understand my point. The game was won because Jaguares defense was awsome , the Jags bench was better, and the Chiefs could not play their best game. Jaguares are in loose loose situation: When they did not get results they said taht did not belong to SR , and now that they come out and win a few and hopefully became serious contenders is because they are a National team with a different shirt. They were 9 players that have worn the Pumas shirt today in the field, but also two players that have never played in SR before today. I think that this tour was great for Jaguares but also for SR where everybody was getting use to the constant supremacy of NZ teams, also to the idea of how hard was to tour in Australasia. Being so predictable is what is killing SR, so I feel this was a month of fresh air for the competition and a sign of hope for the teams from Australia that things can change rather quick if they make the right adjustments.

The only "luck" involved in yesterdays game was that the Chiefs got a bonus point they probably did not deserve. The ref was far from perfect, but that went both ways, and overall neither team got any special favors. Or maybe you are not aware of the calls he missed that halted the Jags? McKenzie should have been yellow carded in the second half, but he did not even get penalized (even the Kiwi commentators went on about that one)

Moa! Mate the Chiefs weren't able to play. the Ref didn't allow it, without taking anything away from the Jags, they were much better than usual!

Another game poorly Officiated, as if the Crusaders were allowed to play their game the score would have been ''right up there'', ~ mishy mashy junk rugby by the Force Rebels!

Mario Ledesma is a great guy and a very astute rugby guy, but I would say after the very ordinary way that game was Officiated and the fact they were a bit lucky not to get over run as they only got over the line by four points, ~so Mario has every right to make salubrious statement on the win but they were ahem!! a tad lucky!

Harry Jones! You are correct to say the Jaguares played well, but the Chiefs weren't allowed to play as the people adjudicating in that game made sure of that, ~ so pathetic, garbage/rubbish call it what you like but the Officiating was absolutely farcical and an absolute joke in what could have been a good game but was ruined by speculative decisions by the guy on the Field and the guy as TMO. That was a horrible game of rugby from a Spectators point of view as it was never ever allowed to ''run'' it was nothing less than a boring, scrumfest and bad Refereeing by all those who dare to call themselves ''Referees" I don't really care that much about who wins or loses, excepting perhaps when it gets down to the close of the Season in Finals etc, but a fair go should be made available by right of being on the paddock of play, and it wasn't in that game! The yellow cards were absolutely ridiculous, the first one was the forward that got 'outed' was just detaching from the scrum and getting up and this Orange guy flew over the top of him, so their was nothing at all that was, as the TMO said "it constitutes possible dangerous play", ~ and I'd like someone to let us know as to what ''possible dangerous play constitutes" what does it mean, and what is, if any the Law that states there's any such thing?, because if there is it's time things were looked at quickly by the people who think they're doing us all a favour by sanitising our game to the extent it is now, ~ Get it right as the Players stand around in confusion wondering what they've done or what they're going to get pinged for next, The general' Laws, are a joke and do nothing less than annoy the hell out of the players and bores the guy at the game watching or, the guys watching at home! Penalise dirty play and deliberate fouls or transgressions by all means but let the game run and allow it to entertain, that's what it's all about but the only entertaining factor in that game was the officiating Referees and his Offsiders Liam Messam did nothing to warrant a yellow card, my Wife and I watched and played that sequence a heap of times to try and sort that out for our own satisfaction and to see exactly what happened and there was absolutely nothing that we could see that warranted a yellow card and a penalty try to boot! And those scrums, setting and resetting multiple times per scrum, are stupidity to the max, but I do like the look on the faces of the front row boys when they're made to ''standup and reset'', "what for this time"? ~ and those crooked throws to the lineouts!!!! Horrible game and good on the Jags' they played well indeed and it certainly jazzes up the Competition when these thing come about! You mention in your next post that you likened that game to an International Test, well let's face it the Jaguares are bar a couple of players all Internationals, so you could be excused for that!

Responding to you guys, but moderated. Not sure why. Was commenting on the first 20:00, where I was very impressed by how the Jaguares kept things tight, and it was only 3-3. Ordinarily, a visiting team stuck for so long in their 22 with the Chiefs having two attacking lineouts from 5 m out, would be down by 10 or 14 points.

For me, this match was very much like an international Test. In the first 20:00, the Chiefs worked their way into the Jaguares’ red zone, but mauls were defended well by the Argies. After 8 minutes, being down “only” 0-3 was big, and showed real quality to soak up that pressure. Many teams in Super Rugby would have found themselves down 0-7 or 0-10, if they were stuck in their own 22 for 8 minutes. From 8:00 to 13:00 it was pick-and-go close to the ruck by Jags, with a few mini-breaks. Patient cycle, with concerted pressure. After Sanchez missed, and it was still 3-0 after 14:00, you thought maybe the Chiefs would roar back, but from 14:00 to 20:00, I was very impressed with how the Jags controlled play, and wound up ending the first quarter, away from home, at the end of a tough tour, tied at 3-3. Then, the game opened up, like a test. Great, mature rugby the Argentines.

Well, if Los Pumas could be really competitive in TRC also, that would really be something to cherish.

I was thinking about that today. RCH it might be different this year and not so easy for the ABs. They planned to travel with an alternative team to Argentina, but that might change now. SA with a new HC is a big question and Australia is not looking to strong.

I reckon an outside factor that has helped the Jags is that the Union is about the change the eligible laws for the Los Pumas. Now it takes more than just get selected for the Jags to be in the picture for starting Test jersey. Anyone with Test ambitions must raise their hand because there is some serious quality Los Pumas can tap into who plays in Europe. TRC could be interesting this year if both SA and ARG can really improve when selecting their best possible team.

Jaguares are playing like they are sort of a test team! And they are! I suspect the big ramp up was mostly about travel/depth/coaching. The talent was always there. SA Conference is tough. The worst teams are the Stormers and Sharks, at the moment, but neither of these teams are easy to beat.

Ledesma after the game: "Well, now it's going to be hard not to talk about that, we are on the road to the playoffs if we keep winning, but I don't think we are at that point, we just need to concentrate on our job and keep working hard, and don't lose that focus. If not we get a little bit dizzy, so we'll just keep the boys grounded." "It's really fulfilling, seeing the boys believing in themselves, and winning against Kiwi opposition is great," Ledesma said. "We'd never beaten a Kiwi side, and now we've beaten two on the road. So really proud of the work they've put in since the beginning of the season, and I hope everybody in Argentina is proud too." "I think it has to be belief. I don't think the boys believed in themselves and their capacities when we got there. And week in, week out, they've been working hard. Obviously results help, but just the determination they're playing with, and not wanting to give a backward step, and keep working and keep defending. And it's been defence and discipline, compared to the last couple of years, it's a big one."
