Cheika to Quade: Here's how you'll play for the Wallabies again

By News / Wire

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has delivered Quade Cooper an ultimatum: leave the Queensland Reds or forget playing for Australia again on his watch.

Reds coach Brad Thorn has already slammed the door shut on Cooper.

Now Cheika has also made it clear there’s no way back into the Wallabies fold unless he joins a rival Australian Super Rugby franchise.

Both the Melbourne Rebels and Brumbies have pursued the exiled star but the 30-year-old is refusing to budge, saying he’s determined to work his way back into the Queensland squad.

Cheika says while he remains a fan of Cooper, he won’t consider plucking the enigmatic playmaker out of Brisbane club rugby to wear the Wallabies gold jumper.

“If he hadn’t had the opportunity to go play Super Rugby, I would say yes because it’s not his fault if he hasn’t had the opportunity, (to play elsewhere),” Cheika said on Fox Sports’ Kick and Chase program.

“But he’s been offered opportunities and I think he should take one – and I would like him to take one of them so he can get up there and be in the position.”

Cooper, though, is happy to continue pocketing some $800,000 a year plying his trade for Brisbane Souths.

And that frustrates Cheika.

“I want to be clear,” said the national coach.

“I’ve been watching his club footy games. It’s been really good actually. The standard of the comp in Brisbane – because I’ve been watching more games for that reason – it’s been outstanding.

“But (he needs to) even just go and get a couple of games at the (Super Rugby) pace. It goes up a level so then, when it comes to the Test, you’ll be ready to go.

“He has to have form on the board, like all players.”

Thorn, in his first year as a Super Rugby coach, banished Cooper from the Queensland squad before a ball was even kicked this season and has repeatedly said the Reds were “going in a different direction”.

Cheika is adamant he won’t intervene, not only on the Cooper conundrum but with any selection issues involving Australia’s four Super Rugby sides.

“If we want to start to build a proper type of collaboration, where the national team’s involved with the states, you’ve got to trust and respect what the coaches are doing as well,” Cheika said.

“So if he’s (Thorn) saying there’s no way he’s coming back in, I trust him.”

Unfortunately for QC the one thing he can't do is get selected even when he plays well enough.

Why would Cooper want to? Cheika never gave Cooper an honest opportunity even when he was showing more than Foley. QC isn’t stupid and knows Cheika would never give him a decent crack surrounded by the best players available. That’s all Foley gets and he delivers bugger all despite what some will tell you. QC was turned on by his home country for elbowing the master of subtle cheap shots. In turn many wallabies fans turned on him instead of rallying around him against are arch rivals. He’s not perfect but geez the flack he cops is just insane and says a lot more about the spineless Aus rugby community wanting to pander to the rest of the rugby world. Just think about the emotional toll it would have taken and our response is to bag him. Yet he still wanted to be a Wallaby more than anything. He faced a horror run of injuries and just got bagged more and more. When you know your trying, your not getting a fair go and your copping abuse for your troubles why would you bother. Cheika is that much of a grub that after he’s driven the bloke out of side without as much as one fair crack, he has the hide to call him out publicly. No wonders the games in the state it is. Anyone who thinks that type of environment will bring about anything positive is a buffoon. Reaching the WC final was a fluke. Things are just so bad right now. Izzy is making his public comments (IMO he’s entitled to his own opinion) but it shows signs he’s not happy. Good young players keep going overseas because they aren’t going to advance here and they know it. Performances are down along with everything else and yet Cheika remains as arrogant as ever. His captain is saying he’s weighing up overseas options when we all know he’s hanging out for more cash. To everyone on the outside he’s far from a certain selection but he knows he’s not going to be treated like the rest. People are walking away from the game in droves so Quade isn’t alone in thinking why should I bother.

Quades fans will do anything to avoid the reality that qaude is just not good enough! Coaches like chieka have watched him train and play for years and are making their decisions to leave him out based on that. How many fans on here have watched quade train this closely and have such extensive knowledge of his current abilities?

It seems like the same standard to me. 1. We select our Wallabies from the SR competition because that is the highest level beneath the national team. 2. Train hard, work hard, commit yourself to being the best that you can be and you'll have a good chance (but not guaranteed) of being at the standard that we need you to be. 3. If you want to be a Wallaby then play in the SR competition so that we can properly assess you against your peers. 4. If you are offered a SR contract and don't take it then that is your choice but you shouldn't expect a Wallaby berth. 5. If you are selected in the Wallaby squad then that is the first step but doesn't mean that you make it into the starting 15 for each game. That seems to be a pretty consistent message to me and is the same for any national team for any sport anywhere in the world.

Great Question Freddie! Seems they want him to break his contract on a gamble and pocket the coin.

Cheika is right in the sense that there is no way a 10 can be sharp enough going from club footy to test footy. The line speed of the All Blacks is far greater than anything in Brisbane first grade and Wallaby squad training is not going to be enough either. But Quade played okay the last time he was a Wallaby and still got dropped so he's not at all likely to get back in now even though, match practice aside, he'd still have to be pretty close to being at least the second best 10 in Aussie rugby.

OZ Rugby Fan " I know the claim is that since he had Foley at 12 meant he cant be judged on his poor play during this time. Foley was handed a poor 12 replacement when he returned to 10 too and did a better job IMO I guarantee you if Foley was the player to stay in 10 with Cooper at 12 he would not be given any leeway like QC. He would just be called a rotten 10. He is not allowed excuses like QC." Whatha ?? Foley is never ever criticized by the Rugby press or Wallaby coaching staff.

Oz Rugby fan That is why the Wallabies are like they are now. Hopeless. Foley is not better than QC just because you reckon he played better than QC in one game in 2017. Foley is a joke of a player and to say their is no one else is total rubbish as Cheika refuses to try anyone else to see if their is.

The thing is that the certain posters always ignore that when Foley played QC in the Waratahs v Reds match, billed as a Wallabies audition, despite expectations on here, Foley still outplayed QC. Foley was having dizzy spells and not playing with a solid team, the Waratahs were utter rubbish but they still beat the Reds. I cant recall seeing QC outplay Foley in a head to head contest. There's always a "reason" (excuse) for QCs performance based on posts on here though. Mind you, if one believes what posters on here say anyone is better than Foley. Jono Lance was meant to be better than Foley apparently based on what I read in many comments on here earlier in the year. We saw what happened there just a few weeks back. So far Foley has seen off all Aussie competition whether posters with agendas want to accept that or not. I know some people feel QC was not given a proper go for the Wallabies on his return to AUS but I disagree, he was handed the 10 spot over Foley. I know the claim is that since he had Foley at 12 meant he cant be judged on his poor play during this time. Foley was handed a poor 12 replacement when he returned to 10 too and did a better job IMO. I guarantee you if Foley was the player to stay in 10 with Cooper at 12 he would not be given any leeway like QC. He would just be called a rotten 10. He is not allowed excuses like QC. At the moment Foley is the best 10 in Australia. Whether that is damning with faint praise is a different question. Based in on comments on here though any one from Europe could just step into the Wallabies 10 spot and out play him though... Still, what the argument here is about who should be second in line or first inline come injury. That to me is easily QC. I don't think he is as good as Foley myself although he does some things very well there is a whole lot of downside to QC. Its not like he isn't a known quantity. However that's a different argument, QC should be at the Reds or at least in SR and thus should be in squad contention for the Wallabies. That's the issue. I agree with Cheika, you can't be plucking QC out of club Rugby to the Wallabies unless you have no choice. He needs to be in SR. Not just for the Wallabies but for Australian SR in general.

Peter the salary spilt between RA and the QRU has been reported both both ways but I'm pretty sure the actual share is QRU $650,000 RA $150,000.

You realize pundit arena is a fan site similar to the roar right? The credibility goes as far as that of the writer. Toulon could not "release" Cooper (Without suffering the costs) as he had a contract and the option was in his favour. The article also discusses a "trade" with the Reds, which again, was not required, as Quade had the ability to terminate the contract. Keep repeating it as much as you like Messa, it still doesn't stack up.

Wrong again Drongo. Your initial post expressed great concern about the standing of contracts between player and QRU/ARU. There is nothing in this story to suggest any breach. You then bring in conspiracy theories. Stick to the issue...namely, does QC want to try another SR team or not? It's up to him - I have expressed no view on whether he should or should not, so don't accuse me of having prejudices. My emotions on this seem to be far more in control than yours.

what facts drongo am i getting wrong? qc has said he's staying in club and is enjoying himself. thorn has iterated over and over that qc is allowed to leave and that he doesnt value his contributions. putting the timing aside which imo was just incidental, remember that thorn isnt qc's agent and has a whole team to worry about not just quade. if quade makes it back into the WBs i'll become a fan, but tbh i dont think he has the cajones and grit to put in the hard work for a gold jersey.

The only way Cooper could ever get a look into a Wallabies jersey would be travelling back in time and signing up for the Waratahs before 2013 He would be the most capped Wallaby of all time had that been the case, Chieka is a lying sack of $h*t pretending Quade will be given a fair go. Just like Scott Higginbotham, he will be given a few minutes in the first game of the season and then discarded for obscure reasons Thank god we have Ned Hanigan though right ???

Exactly it doesn't make any sense as a professional athlete and until someone gives a genuine insight into the reasons then we can only speculate which i agree is pointless.
