England vs Barbarians: Rugby Union live scores, blog

By Oliver Matthews / Expert

England will take on the Barbarians at Twickenham in a warm up game for the English ahead of their South Africa tour as the international rugby season gets under way.

There will be some great talent on display and it will be interesting to see how NRL convert Semi Radradra performs so be sure to join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from midnight AEST.

As with any BaaBaas game, there are many subplots to the action that will be interesting to keep an eye on as well as what we hope will be some exciting game play on the field.

For England the tour to South Africa is critical and this first step is an important one as Jones looks to get back some of the rhythm and success that saw the team rise to No.2 in the world at the end of 2017.

Three back to back losses in the Six Nations to Scotland, France and Ireland has raised many question marks though over the England team.

With there being about 15 matches left for them before the World Cup begins there is little time left to try new things – they will want to be adding depth to the squad this year rather than experimenting too much with new players and combinations.

But this squad for the BaaBaas game and the tour to South Africa does have quite a bit of youth about it.

Names such as Trinder, Mercer, Singleton and Schonert won’t be known on the international stage yet but they will want to impress Jones from the outset and show him that they should be in his plans for Japan.

The centre pairing of Henry Trinder and Piers Francis will be interesting to watch. England have tried a number of partnerships in the centres during Eddie Jones’ reign and none have absolutely stamped their names on the spots.

Owen Farrell is likely to play No.12 on tour but if Ford’s international form continues to be average, then Jones might start thinking about moving Farrell into the fly-half role and looking for a new centre set up.

Alternatively the returning Cipriani might find himself moving from international banishment to starting No.10 for his country.

Cipriani starts on the bench for this game and there’s debate about whether he’ll come on at full back or fly half but just the fact that he’s there is an interesting story.

The back row for England will also be under some scrutiny. One of the issues with England in the Six Nations earlier this year was that the go forward from the forwards was really missing and with Billy Vunipola playing for his club in the English Premiership Grand Final the day before, Sunday’s game will provide an opportunity for Mercer and Curry to show that they can bring some power to the England pack.

For the BaaBaas there is some serious talent on display and with their captain Lobbe retiring after the final whistle, they will want to send him out on a high.

While they might have spent more time in the bars of London than on the training field this week they will be keen and eager to get stuck into the English, none more so than Chris Ashton who starts at full back.

The speedster was top try scorer in the French Top 14 league this year and he’d like nothing more than to show Eddie Jones that his decision to drop him was a poor one.

Speaking of speed, it will also be exciting to see what former Parramatta Eels winger Semi Radradra can do on the big stage.

His debut season in the French Top 14 wasn’t quite as impressive as he’d have hoped with a combination of drama and lack of tries but he is a serious attacking weapon. While the Eels have been desperately missing his ability to smash into defensive lines and leave them lying in pieces, the BaaBaas will be looking to take full advantage of that same physicality.

At No.10 the BaaBaas have Finn Russell who will relish being able to beat England twice in quick succession. The Scottish fly-half tore England apart during the 6 Nations this year and the English defence will know that they cannot take their eyes of him for a second when he’s got so much talent around him to unleash.

Prediction
Understandably BaaBaa games are tough to predict and with an experimental England side on display as well there are plenty of unknowns.

The England team will want to win and win well and while there is some great talent on display for the BaaBaas, the home team should get the job done.

England to win by 12.

Well I guess we have Samu Kerevi. Now that's a match made in heaven, S.Radradra against Kerevi or M.Koroibete. :) Big boys need only apply.

Once again that good old England adage ‘structure’ dealt to by players who actually have skills. Jones has got suckered into the English mindset in thinking they can control a game, didnt bring players through, didnt create enough backplay and now everyone knows that by attacking England youll likely beat them. Boks have selected 16 newbies so expecting a great series. The new frontier versus the dark ages. Looking firward to it.

The Barbarians have beaten England 63 - 45 at Twickenham in a match that has helped grow the BaaBaas legend while also giving Eddie Jones lots to think about as he boards the flight to South Africa. There was a lot of talk ahead of the game about the powerful runners that the BaaBaas had to call upon in their backs and this was typified by the impact that Semi Radradra throughout the entire game. In a team of such talent that was always going to be willing to throw caution to the wind, it was the Fijian flyer who really made a name for himself and announced himself on the world rugby stage. His first season in France has just come to a close with some mixed reviews. He showed plenty of potential and his teammate at Toulon Chris Ashton says he owes his top try scorer position in the French Top 14 to Semi’s ability to provide him with great chances. But he never really set the league on fire when it came to scoring himself as many predicted and he’s ended up leaving Toulon for rivals Bordeaux for his second season - breaking a few Parramatta hearts in the process. Today though he was awesome. He scored one try himself, was instrumental in at least two or three others and was a constant threat that the England backs just couldn’t figure out how to handle. His ability to use his power and pace to break through the first line of defence had a number of old and young England players on the floor with their arms flailing and his off loads were Sonny Bill at his best. The rest of the BaaBaas played their part as well with Finn Russell especially putting in a great performance at #10 and beating England for the second time this year following success in the 6 Nations. He’s really growing as well as a player - he hasn’t lost the impulsive creativity that he built his name on but he is adding a level of control that is going to make him a very dangerous prospect. England just couldn’t keep up with the pace that the BaaBaas insisted on playing at from the outset. In the first 20 minutes the exhibition side had run in three tries and England were looking totally confused about how to compete. What is perhaps more scary for Eddie Jones and his team is that the BaaBaas were’t exactly doing anything unexpected and while they always looked to run with ball in hand they weren’t pulling off any incredible set plays or miraculous skills. They just played fast, hard and direct rugby with plenty of support runners. The problems at the breakdown that plagued England in the 6 Nations were still evident and the BaaBaas stole their fair share of ball throughout the game. On the upside there were some good performances from men in white shirts. Curry was very impressive at #7 and he could well be a key part of England’s set up for years to come. Equally Piers Francis and Singleton have done their chances a whole lot of good to figure in the South Africa tour. The return of Danny Cipriani to an England shirt was always going to be interesting and the reformed rebel looked pretty good and very comfortable with ball in hand. He showed off a range of skills with some nice passing to put men in space and some deft kicks that gained his team both territory when needed and points when he put Johnny May in for a late try. England did have their chances and having been 21-0 down they did fight their way back into the game and really should have had the structure and quality to win the match. But whenever they got close the BaaBaas found another opportunity and made something out of nothing. In the end the England team just couldn’t compete and their insistence on defending in a narrow style always gave players like Ashton, Tuisova, Radradra and Matavesi too much space. Ironically it was another England exile - Chris Ashton - who enjoyed himself far too much and made the England team pay for giving him some space and a sniff of the try line. He racked up his hat trick within 25 minutes and while he has clearly lost a yard or two of pace, his ability to be in the right place for the off load and run great lines is better than ever. While the former Toulon pairing of Ashton and Radradra had the biggest impact, it was down to retiring captain Lobbe to really steal the show at the end. After the BaaBaas scored one last try on the sound of the hooter, Lobbe came back on to take the conversion and slotted it like he was a #10. It was a great and fitting end to such a wonderful career. Radradra well deserved the Man of the Match reward and his coaches at the Fiji National side will be very excited. Semi has announced that he wants to play for both the XV and 7s national sides and based on today’s performance he will be a real asset for the Pacific Islanders. He should start in the opening game of the Pacific Nations Cup on 9th June and it won’t be surprising at all if he picks up player of the tournament accolades. For Eddie Jones it isn’t the end of the line as there were many of his first choice players missing today. But with a year to go until the World Cup, he would be wanting to add some quality depth to back up his preferred first XV and clearly that depth has a lot of work to do.

Radradra toiled in rugby league for 5 years between 2013-17 and no one outside of Australia and Fiji knew him, one match for the Barbarians and the WHOLE WORLD will know who he is by tomorrow morning lol.... that is the difference between league and union.

he accepted Fiji selection now it will be bad to go back on it. Nathan Hughes refused his selection to pay for England. Brad Shields refused his selection to play for England. Im sure Semi " sonny bill " Radrada does not want to look bad in the public eye. anyway from the begining he said he will play for Fiji where as the other guy ( i think Raka ) has said he wants to play for France.

Is it designated as a test match? Surely not. And England is getting thumped but its almost an England B side. Only saw the last 20 minutes (didn't know the game was on tonight) but looked pretty entertaining. Amazed to see Sitaleki Timani still playing at this level, and he got a meat pie also.

Full Time 80' - The Barbarians have put a very big dent in England's preparations for their tour of South Africa beating them 63-45 at Twickenham in a fantastic display of powerful, running rugby. From the first minute to the last it was a real spectacle and the BaaBaas never stopped their commitment to attack from every location. Semi Radradra deservedly picked up man of the match with an impressive performance that will have his future team mates at Bordeaux and the Fijian National side smiling from ear to ear! Full match report to come. England: 45 Barbarians: 63
