Following on the back of a great Kiwi clash on Friday where the Highlanders saw off the Canes, this clash in Hamilton promises more of the same with two exciting teams each with very important prizes to play for.

For the Crusaders they can really hammer home their advantage at the top of the ladder. The Canes’ loss on Friday means that a Crusaders win will take them 10 points clear and even though the Canes will still have the game in hand, the Christchurch teams’ fate will very much be in their hands.

The reigning champions put in a very wise and experienced performance last week in the wet against the Canes. They just gradually squeezed the life out of the men in yellow and despite the terrible conditions played low risk rugby that allowed them to keep amassing points.

For this game against the Chiefs they welcome back three of their All Blacks stars in Joe Moody, Israel Dagg and Jordan Taufua. It will be interesting to see how Dagg slots back in after the time off he’s had this season through injury.

It’ll also be interesting to see how fullback Havili goes. He’s had an underwhelming season so far compared to last year and his first half against the Canes was pretty terrible.

But he really turned things around in the second half and was one of the best players on the pitch. He needs to recapture his previous form and no better time to do it then before the Finals.

This match will allow us to have another look at two of the top fly halves in the world right now in Damian McKenzie and Richie Mo’unga.

Both have had good seasons so far with McKenzie making the switch from No.15 to No.10 really well and Mo’unga impressing as he leads the best side in the comp around with a great combination of flair and control.

For the Chiefs they name the same starting 15 and also welcome back club hero Sam Cane to the bench. It’s easy to get distracted by the talent in the backs for the Chiefs but their forwards are not to be underestimated especially with the talent of players like Retallick. He was great against the Tahs last week and is key to the overall success of the Chiefs this season.

A win for the Chiefs will see them leapfrog back over the Highlanders who have stolen 3rd spot from the Chiefs with their win against the Canes on Friday.

The Chiefs will also know that if they slip up in this game then they’ve got the inform Jaguares just three points behind them and coming up fast! Now is not the time to stumble.

Prediction
The Chiefs have not lost at FMG Stadium since the middle of 2016. That’s an impressive record of 11 straight wins. They also played well last week and have stable selection which makes them a hard team to beat.

However, it’s the Crusaders isn’t it? No one can beat the men in red and black. With their strength at the set piece and Mo’unga playing so well this should be another win for the competition leaders.

Crusaders to win by 7

Crusaders were very inaccurate but in classic style they had enough big moments in them. Mo'unga was very good again, whereas McKenzie had another flighty match. If it wasn't for DM's versatility, I'd prefer RM to be test back up. Scott Barrett, who I've found to also be very up and down, had another strong match. Very timely if Retallick is out.

Full Match Report The Crusaders have beaten the Chiefs 34-20 in a hard fought game in Hamilton and stretch their lead at the top of the Super Rugby ladder. Despite some last second changes to the Crusaders side they were just too good for the Chiefs. The men in red and black caught the home side napping in the first few minutes and took a quick tap and go penalty close to the line with Bedwell-Curtis crashing over. It was an early example of how the Crusaders - the masters of structure and set piece - are also aware rugby players who can spot an opportunity when others switch off. The Crusaders definitely didn’t have the game their whole way though. In the end the possession stats were pretty much equal and the Chiefs dominated on the territory side of things. But whereas the Chiefs couldn’t turn their advantages into points the Crusaders were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over. At the half time break there were just 7 points in it with the Crusaders leading 20 - 13 and the next score was going to be crucial. Unfortunately for the home side that score came from the Crusaders and even though the Chiefs would score themselves a few minutes later they were always chasing the game which is very tough to do against the Crusaders. For the Chiefs Ngatai played well and is getting better and better this season. He was a constant threat and his ability to kick well and run with ball in hand kept the defence guessing. But the best player for the Chiefs was the backrower Jacobson - he picked up two tries, stole a line out from the Crusaders and was always there in support when the Chiefs were running the ball. It was a great game for him and a shame that his efforts didn’t get the points on the competition ladder. Unfortunately the Chiefs forwards just couldn’t compete with the Crusaders set piece and loose play. They fought hard and definitely had some periods of dominance but they were second best for far too much of the game. McKenzie was average tonight in a game when his team really needed one of those amazing performances from him. He wasn’t bad for sure, but a few errors and a lack of real threat when running with the ball just meant he couldn’t have the impact he would have wanted. The Crusaders were solid throughout. Mo’unga was accurate with the boot and he really controlled the game well for his side. He had to go off late in the game and everyone will be hoping that it was just precautionary and nothing serious. It was a special day for the Crusaders and Wyatt Crockett as the club legend played his 200th game for the red and black. He gave away two penalties at the scrum but all will be forgiven seeing as how the team still won and he gets the benefit of the doubt on his special occasion! The Crusaders weren’t electric by any means and the Chiefs worked hard to keep them close on the scoreboard but it did feel like the Crusaders could handle anything that was thrown at them. With their line out so reliable and working as a real attacking weapon they were always able to put pressure on the Chiefs and the home side didn’t find a way to stop the Christchurch men from gaining ground consistently when they had the ball. The Crusaders are now 9 points ahead on the ladder and looking unstoppable. The Chiefs have slipped back to 4th in the conference with the Highlanders’ win last night allowing them to steal 3rd spot. The Chiefs do need to be careful as the rampaging Jags are just 3 points behind them.

Shag will be furious if Moody get cited again. And yes, the good behavior discount will not apply this time. It will be the opposite. Squire got cited today for his clean out on TJP also. I have been surprised that it did not get more attention after the game. All season that kind of shoulder charges to the face has been red carded.

I keep giving props to Fionn who sang Mo'unga praise already last year. That made me look at him closer. And this season he has more or less convinced that Mo'unga is the real deal. And yes, his boot is amazing. It looks so easy, and when he kicks for touch he gets - on average - about 15 meters more than any other 10 in NZ. Ronan O'Gara said pretty early that his mission was to make Mo'unga the new Dan Carter.

Might have cost himself some test matches. Can’t see him getting the ‘good behavior’ discount this time.

Put another elbow into someones face off the ball. It was soft contact, but repeated behavior nonetheless.

The big Mo'unga vs Barrett discussion is probably just around the corner. Mo'unga is sensational and shows that ultimate 10 skill; to able to control the game and create little pieces of magic even when the Saders are under the pump.

Full Time 80' - The Crusaders have beaten the Chiefs 32-20 in a solid performance in Hamilton. The Chiefs fought hard all the way and had their chances to make it a closer finish but where they struggled for that crucial killer execution, the Crusaders were ruthless when they had their chances. The Crusaders set piece - especially the line out - was so solid and was a real weapon both in defence and attack. In the end they had too much quality despite a few key players missing. Their march towards retaining the Super Rugby championship continues! Full match report to come. Chiefs: 20 Crusaders: 34
