Peter Samu's future is cloudy thanks to trans-Tasman bitching

By David Lord / Expert

Rugby is the game they play in heaven, until the New Zealand Rugby Union, the Mitre 10 team Tasman, and Rugby Australia combined to make Peter Samu’s life hell.

This exercise is very simple.

Samu was born in Melbourne, he’s an Australian citizen, he wants to become a Wallaby, and has no ambitions to become an All Black.

He’s contracted to the Crusaders until the end of the Super Rugby season, and has signed with the Brumbies for next season.

The Kiwis are treading a different path.

Samu has also signed with Tasman for the Mitre 10 tournament in New Zealand from August to September, and New Zealand Rugby Union has also thrown Samu’s residency in New Zealand into All Black contention.

As a result New Zealand Rugby Union’s head of professional rugby Chris Lendrum has requested a $50,000 release from the Tasman contract to allow Samu to become a Wallaby against Ireland in the three-Test June window series.

But Rugby Australia has told Lendrum to stick it, Samu should be released for nothing.

In doing so Rugby Australia has virtually told Wallaby coach Michael Cheika, who wants Samu in his squad, that the 26-year-old flanker isn’t worth $50,000.

(AAP Image/Dave Hunt)

As if Rugby Australia would know, seeing there are many times in decision-making the governing body doesn’t know if it’s Arthur or Martha.

So no-one is backing off, making Samu the unfair – and apparently unwanted – meat in the sandwich.

Only the Crusaders bosses Hamish Riach and Scott Robertson are genuine rugby men, with a sense of fair play.

CEO Riach said – “He’s Australian, he’ committed to the Brumbies next season, the Wallabies want him, and he’s clearly going to play for the Wallabies at some point.

“So we’re quite happy for that to be sooner than later”.

Coach Robertson was of the same thinking.

“He’s going to be a Wallaby at some stage isn’t he?

“If that’s in June good on him, he’s good enough to be a Wallaby”.

The next step is crystal clear.

New Zealand Rugby Union should order Tasman to back off and release Samu immediately, and Rugby Australia should pay Tasman $20,000 as goodwill for letting Samu go.

Then an ugly and unnecessary Trans Tasman episode can be put to bed, Peter Samu can pull on a gold jersey, and Michael Cheika can smile.

That’s what should have happened a month ago.

How short some memories are. NZ has saved Aus Rugby. Aus Rugby changed its mind out having co hosting rights in 2003 and voted against us having it in 2011. Imagine the shoe was on the other foot and the ABs wanted a Brumbies player who had an NRC contract with the same stipulations. Would RA let him go without a refund of his wages for time he wouldn't be playing in the country?

New Zealand didn't back down from anything in the Shields issue, he was granted a leave status no folding stuff involved! Nothing to do with World Rugby as New Zealand are and were in the right!

Tasman Makos don't have to release him at all cobber, you're wrong! He will be back in New Zealand sooner than later I'd say particularly when he sees the vast discrepancies in talent and nous the Wallabies have and why they're down in 6th, ~ aren't they?

He's better in the loose than anybody you have at the moment in the Skippy Squad!

Georgina Robinson is telling porkies, the NZRFU never once asked for money for Brad Shields, it didn't happen and he was granted leave to go because of he being a loyal Soldier to NZ Rugby for years and to the Hurricanes etc. If the NZRFU had wanted to, they could have stopped Shields in his tracks, as he is born and bred there played and learned all his rugby there, but his eventual aim was always to make the All Blacks, but for whatever reason he didn't make it. Samu is similar, the only difference is he was born in Aussie', but he's also a New Zealand Citizen playing rugby for New Zealand, and once again as he was contracted to New Zealand rugby and Tasman Makos' so the NZRFU could if they had wanted to stop that Australian move in it's tracks also, but they made a reasonable offer to the ARU of money to be paid to the Tasman Makos', but for some reason they baulked, but the Kiwis wouldn't back off either so in the end your Kiwi Boss of the ARU stumped up with the cash which she had to, else Pete Samu would still be partying up large in the Crusaders Clubrooms right about now!

Mick! ~ You are right in a way mate, Australia does occasionally throw a reasonable player up, but Pete Samu played in the elite of the NZ Rugby development squads, which is the best in the rugby playing World for four years mate, so he was developed in New Zealand!, wasn't he? ~ Any rugby prior to those four years is nothing less than a learning phase for any aspiring player! And the Aussie guys playing for Aussie sometimes were very likely developed in Australia, but so what! ~ What do you mean by that statement? ~ I would say that not one of the aforementioned Players would make a development squad in New Zealand and certainly never make an ALL Black side, so you keep them mate! He was in a position whereby he was head hunted by Cheika and his boys who made this tentative offer to him of playing for the Brumbies and making the Wallabies: ~ He was caught in a lousy position, because he didn't want to leave New Zealand, the Crusaders or Tasman, so being in a quandary he consulted Razor Robertson and the NZRFU Representative (can't remember his name) and they all sat down and he put it to them the situation and they walked Pete through all scenarios, such as his wanting to stay in NZ, and the Crusaders and Tasman against the Aussie offer of the Brumbies and the Wallabies, and the Coach and the Rugby Rep more or less said to him that they wouldn't stand in his way of the Aussie offer at all and suggested he may be wise to take the offer with the possibility of wearing a yellow jumper although the New Zealand scene was the one he preferred, so these Kiwi guys obviously suggested he take the Aussie' offer, but Tasman being their own entity would have to be compensated for the remainder of his contract for what he already had been paid taking into consideration he had cut himself loose from them, the Tasman Franchise! Read it in the Stuff news two days ago!!

Nah! they're filthy because we may ask for our Kiwi rugby players back less any transfer or contracts involved ~ There wouldn't be any rugby played and only half a Wallaby team!! Like you say mate, this guy ''who's feeling dirty'' obviously has had his bird pinched by a Kiwi rugby player!

SP ~ Now let's just go the other way princess, ~ Us Kiwis want our players back from the Skippys', not just a few, the thousands of them, we could do with them in Kiwiland, ~ OK it'd be a bit mean as you guys would just have to shut shop coz the Kiwis are the backbone of every Super and Wallaby side you guys have ever had! ~ We'll take our Coaches back also! But, at the end of the day New Zealand rugby owes Skippy rugby the sum total of zilch, ~ The NZRFU loaned the Skippies a few dollars to keep them going, they loaned them a few players and they rescheduled games that would always be played in New Zealand just to try and get them some finance of which they had none, You can have your man back, he'd fit in well in Skippyland' and would be far and away a better loosie than any you have in Aussie' at the moment, ~ But c'mon princess, giz' our players back!!

Pete samu released, free to play for wallabies and will play for vikings in NRC this year having been released from Tasman contract. https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/international/104438180/crusaders-flanker-pete-samu-cleared-to-play-for-wallabies

He's been released, he will also be released from his Tasman contract, and will play for the Vikings in NRC (assuming he's on Wallabies duties). Seems a compromise was found. Or maybe this was just part of the marketing strategy for the build up to Bledisloe.

Well AR has brought out his contract, and he's been released and will be aligned with Central Vikings - bitching can cease

You have provided no evidence, I have from a New Zealand sourced link. Get back to me when you can do better.

I dunno why people are raising the point of have Tasman paid him or not yet. It’s irrelevant. What is relevant is that if selected and capped in June if called upon for the RC he must be released and Tasman will be forced to continue to pay him. That’s what the NZRU are trying to prevent.

And Samu gets a court summons. I don’t understand why you don’t get this. If he’s released to play against Ireland then he must be released for the RC if called upon. If he’s released for the RC neither he nor Tasman are in breach of contract. Tasman must pay and that’s what the NZRU are trying to avoid.

Muzzo, I was living in Fiji when the 1984 Wallabies rocked up to play Fiji. Went to a house party that they attended. Geez, that Steve Cutler bloke was tall! :-)

What’s the going rate for developing a player to international std these days ? 50k seems pretty reasonable. He wouldn’t be a wallaby if it wasn’t for the NZ rugby system. He’d still be playing club rugby in Melbourne

Well OB, this issue, just might have the NZRFU, start looking at taking Australian players/Australian born players on board, for the ITM, & so forth. I wouldn't blame them, considering this sort of crap, might pop up again.

Yep allblackfan Grant Batty, & the AB's did play in Fiji, also quite regularly in those days Our AB Colts team, played in the Pacific Islands. Chris Laidlaw will attest to that, as it was before he became an AB. So in truth, I can't even remember any Australian representative side touring, or going to the Islands.

How very true Jacko, as we have noted over the years, as to how well those in the ARU/RA have performed. Try comparing the administration costs, between the two, as you will see that the NZRFU, runs at under half the cost, of their Australian counterparts, & definitely over the decades, have been far more successful.

Yep Kirky, another reason NOT to accept Australian born players, if this sort of thing does become an on going issue. As you know the NZRFU, is still doing a far better job than their Australian counterparts.
