It was the upset of the season, maybe the decade, when the Gold Coast Suns beat the Sydney Swans by 24-points at the SCG last Saturday.

After a dominant first quarter by the Swans, the siren to start the second quarter woke Gold Coast like an alarm clock and they played some of the best footy we’ve seen from them this year.

Ex-Sydney assistant coach Stuart Dew was the mastermind, but his players delivered in an inspiring effort to salvage the last few weeks of the season and make it worthwhile.

Carlton experienced yet another convincing defeat on Sunday, this time to the hands of Hawthorn by 12 goals.

At the first break Carlton had not scored, a goal and two behinds in the second term meant they went in to half time with just eight points.

To make matters worse, Zach Fisher limped off with what scans have revealed to be a small break in his left fibula and Liam Jones suffered a medial ligament strain to his right knee.

In team news for the Suns, Charlie Ballard (knee), Brayden Crossley (cheekbone) and Callum Ah Chee (illness) will miss the clash with the Blues.

Brayden Fiorini, David Swallow and Jack Bowes have been named in their places; Fiorini and Swallow will give Gold Coast’s midfield a boost, while Bowes will cover the absence of Ah Chee who moved into the defensive line last week.

Carlton have made five changes: Zach Fisher (leg) and Liam Jones (knee) will miss the remainder of the season with their injuries, and Levi Casboult, Matt Shaw and Nick Graham have been omitted.

Dale Thomas returns from injury and Jed Lamb suspension, while Darcy Lang, Sam Rowe and Ciaran Byrne have all been included in the side.

Matthew Kreuzer won’t return in this clash, with a very cautious approach being taken regarding his elevated heart rate against the Saints in round 17.

Former Bulldog and inaugural Suns player Jarrod Harbrow will celebrate 150 club games on Saturday night and be honoured with Life Membership.

Prediction
What had the potential to be a wooden spoon battle is no longer, as the Suns’ surprise victory last week means they sit in 17th place, three wins above Carlton and the number one draft pick.

Stuart Dew will finally get his first home win as coach and the Suns will celebrate back-to-back victories.

Gold Coast Suns by 19 points.

The Carlton Blues have defeated the Gold Coast Suns by 35 points at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night, notching up their second win of the season. Gold Coast could not back up their brilliant win against Sydney last weekend, they scored three goals in the opening term but it took them an hour to score another. Carlton weathered the early Gold Coast storm and from there became the dominant side up at Metricon. Skills were poor in the greasy conditions, but the effort and pressure from the Blues in the third term, allowed them to kick away with a seven goal to one quarter. The usual suspects for Carlton – Patrick Cripps (38 disposals, 1 goal, 11 tackles) and Marc Murphy (36 disposals, 1 goal, 8 clearances) – were prolific, but it was the involvement of their young players that resulted in the win. Ten goal scorers contributed for the Blues, with Paddy Dow and Darcy Lang the only multiple goal scorers (2 goals each). Jarrod Witts was solid in the ruck for Gold Coast with 60 hit-outs, Jarryd Lyons (29 disposals, 11 clearances) found plenty of the ball in the middle and Steven May (17 disposals) went forward in the second half, scoring a goal in the final term. David Swallow hit his head hard on the turf in a tackle by Patrick Cripps in the first quarter, he stayed off the ground with concussion for the remainder of the game. Jacob Weitering is the only injury concern for the Blues: he bravely collided with Steven May in a marking contest and hobbled off with a knee injury. He gave the thumbs up to medical staff following assessment and returned to the ground to shake hands, not as serious as first feared. Next up for the Suns is a game on the big stage – the MCG – against Melbourne, and Carlton host GWS at Etihad Stadium, both games are on Sunday afternoon. Final Score Gold Coast: 5.14 (44) Carlton: 12.7 (79)

Liam, quite warm weather up here at the moment. It was 25 today so at night you get a lot of dew on the ground, so conditions become slippery. Impressive games from the youngsters led by Crippa. Dow, SPS, Charlie, O'Brien and Kennedy all played consistently over the 4 quarters. Weitering had a great game and it looked like he was gaining in confidence as the game went on. Also some good efforts from Silvagni and Harry.

It was pretty damp during the game, lots of fumbling, spilled marks and kind of wet weather footy for most of the first half.
